Election Commission Drops Campaign Finance Violation Complaint Against Pelosi

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - The Federal Election Commission has dismissed a complaint against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) alleging that she violated campaign finance laws last year when TV spots paid for by the the Alliance for limate Protection featuring her ran on national cable networks.
The conservative Judicial Watch had filed the complaint on May 23, 2008, a month after the environmental group, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by former Vice President Al Gore, launched the second ad in a national ad campaign on "Unlikely Alliances" to fight climate change.
Judicial Watch had argued that the spot was an in-kind contribution and a campaign donation by the Alliance to Pelosi because the ad began running within 90 days of the statewide primary election for June 3, 2008 in which the speaker was a candidate. The group also said Pelosi's husband Paul, who was the treasurer of the speaker's campaign treasurer, had failed to report the contributions.
But the FEC said on Monday it was dropping the case "because the principal goal of the ads appeared to be to increase attentionto a policy issue rather than candidate Pelosi."
