How about the US vs Russia in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict

Americans think that Russia is guilty in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict. This opinion caused some kinda hate towards Russian people. They say, that America tries to provoke a war against Russia. I hope it's not truth, but anyway...It makes me feel so bad....so i wonder, what do you think...?

 

After illegally invading Iraq, the U.S. doesn't have any moral foundation whatsoever in criticizing Russia for defending South Ossetia and Abkhazia's desire to not be a part of Georgia.

It was a strategic mistake on Georgia's part to think that they could make an incursion into South Ossetia and not expect some reaction from Russia.

 

ok, i see what you're saying....but even though you say that America doesnt have any foundation in criticizing Russia, it does criticize it! and I have a few friends who are just back from vacation in the US. and they said that many Russian students got fired or just couldnt find a job because of this conflict! when they were looking for a job, as soon as the managers found out about them being from Russia, they said NO.

 

Im gonna put my 2 cents in this (since the question is being asked) but actually I feel that Russia is in the wrong.

First, South Ossetia and Abkhazia are a "part" of Georgia, not Russia. I understand that they wish to break away and be recognized as inderpedent republics, but thats a dispute between them and Georgia. As much as Russia may want to assist the two regions, resorting to military force only escalates the matter.

Im sure that ethnicity, nationality, and race plays some part in this, but Russia is still wrong for butting in. If I may use an analogy, if texas wanted to break away from the united states (texas has a huge mexican population and once was a part of mexico) but the u.s. refused to recognize it and used force to keep texas as part of the u.s., we wouldnt accept mexico sending troops and tanks into texas and the united states.

Russia only invaded georgia because its bigger and stronger than georgia and knew that georgia couldnt put up much of a fight. If georgia had more military might, russia would have used more diplomacy.

 

Actually it does the opposite as the Georgia/South Ossetia/Abkhazia matter loses the potential for ballooning into a Russia/Chechnya caliber of conflict over an extended period of time with greater civilian and military casualties.

Speaking of Chechnya, there is a double standard with regard to Russia honoring and defending South Ossetia and Abkhazia's right to sovereignty or to join Russia, but clamping down on Chechnya for wanting to break away.

 

Russia did not nothing but defend what they believe belongs to them. They were ready for the mistake Georgia made and pounded on them and sent a very clear message that Russia will no longer tolerate what they feel is nonsense and that they are not an inept country anymore.

What's interesting was the slanted reporting on the conflict here that painted the Bear as being a bully and invading when other media outlets like the BBC stated Georgia started it. Propaganda.

Americans who feel Russia is wrong consider the following. The crux of this and why the US is so involved here(yet we pay no attention to Dafur) has a lot to with our continued presence in East. Georgia wants to join Nato and Russia does not want American influence this close to their borders. Just think for a minute if Canada decided to join some alliance with Russia and Russia decided to erect military bases in the area. How do you think the US government would like that?????

In the end the US nor the European Union can do nothing. Our military is spread out all over the place and worn out and the EU depends on Russia to provide the majority of their energy needs. The current administration should be quiet with their bravado about what Russia should do, they'll be out of office so their words are really just chit chatter.

 

But what does that have to do with Russia involving itself in georgia's matters concerning its (georgia) territories?

South Ossetia and Abkhazia are a part of georgia...not russia.

At the risk of an American backlash;hasn’t the USA done something not too dissimilar to this in Haiti. No, not in 1994, I mean further back in 1915, when they invaded Haiti, to prevent a possible German invasion (Haiti was unstable during world war one) and to protect its citizens and business interests from the internal government turmoil happening at the time. The USA military stayed there for 19 years. What a lot of people fail to see or understand is that most South Ossetians are Russian citizens as well. Isn’t Russia not entitled to defend its citizens like America did back in 1915? It’s a bit hypocritical of the American government to condemn Russian actions…Bush and his administration really shouldn’t be taking the moral high ground on this.

 

What Russia (or any other nation) does is their own business. Our government needs to stay out of other nation's affairs

Anyways, it's not gonna change reguardless of whether Obama or McCain 's elected. American governments, both Democratic (some of you may not believe that) and Republican have consistently interferred in other nation's business. The US needs to go back to a noninterventionist foreign policy

we went to war against the wishes of other countries in NATO, and no one stopped us because we're the "biggest bully on the block."

You are right Jelly about Russia. The country has this empire fix that does not quit. They invaded the Baltic nations during WWII and sent to Siberia their leaders where most of them died. On Georgia,they are in the wrong since they supported the rebels in breaking their country apart and maybe stop the flow of oil. I hope the government will get to its senses.

I dont understand? How do you suffer just because people from other countries dont like your home country's policies?

I know it may make you uncomfortable to have to answer questions about your home country's actions, but we all live with that...especially we americans. (There are tons of negative posts here my americans who disagree the actions and policies of the united states.

 

Oh...no one is saying that the united states has clean hands when it comes to foreign affairs. If anything...the united states and russia are just different sides of the same dirty coin.

 

yes, of course i do, suffer! because I cant feel comfortable if I live in a country which is hated by at least a half of the world! and I cant be ok with the fact that if I come to the US, I will feel like being a second-rate person. I believe that world has to be united! we all are people made by One God, this mutual hating is just a terrible thing...

DI,you won't be treated like a second class citizen in US. You can feel free to speak your mind in the USA.

 

I know I can speak, but I still will have problems with finding a job and stuff like that! cause this is what happened this summer with my friends in the USA.

 

DI more likely than not your friends had difficulty getting a job based on their qualifications and the economy here in the US is in a recession which is what Russia is attempting to suppress by not raising interest rates in the face of rising inflation. Right, since some foods there has doubled and or tripled. However the hot chick rule still reigns supreme, hot chick always get a job....
