He is getting his gallbladder removed on Thursday. They did an MRI on it today to see if it's gallstones or a tumor.

They are also performing an ECRP procedure which is an endoscopy that checks out your pancreas, liver, and gallbladder. It allows them to see down there, but also take a biopsy if they see a growth and do some procedures, like remove gallstones that are blocking the bile duct.

He also has a blood infection.

We don't know anything else about the blood infection yet because that specialist hasn't been in to see him yet. But, googling it doesn't make me feel any better. LOL.

We shall see.

About 20 minutes ago, I was all set to come on here and sing praises that he was on the mend.

They did the endoscopy-type procedure tonight and the doctor took care of an obstruction and said he did not see a mass anywhere. Score 1 for that.

After the procedure, my Dad drank some apple juice and said he was feeling much much better and even expressed an interest in food again.

A little bit after we got home, my Dad called and told my Mom that he ate all of the food they brought up to him. He hadn't shown interest in eating since Saturday morning.

He called again later and everything was fine.

The infectious disease specialist (for his blood infection) called my Mom and talked to her and told her that they're working to figure out what germ is causing his infection so they can use better antibiotics than what he's on right now.

The doctor was VERY optimistic and said that because my Dad was strong and not chronically ill, he sees no complications.

That put my Mom at ease.

Then about 20 minutes ago, my Dad calls and said he had a setback. He started to get the chills and his breathing was not right. He said that about 8 people came in to work on him. He's being transferred to the ICU now.

My Mom is wondering if maybe it's a reaction to the antibiotics.

We'll find out more tomorrow. Just when we started to hope, it gets brought down again.

this is a scary time when there are a lot of unknowns. try to remain focused and strong for both your father but also your mother.

did they test the obstruction? I know you said no masses were found, just wondering if they conducted any tests otherwise.

my father also had an emergency gall bladder removal and all of this sounds familiar to me. I'm not trying to scare you, but I would ask questions.

My Dad got a central line put in for ease of access with drugs, and blood draw, etc. When they put it in, he went into a-fib. They were able to regulate his heartbeat with medication, so that's a good thing.

His gallbladder is rotten, so no matter what, it's coming out. His surgery is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow.

His platelets are too low, so he'll have to get at least one blood transfusion before his surgery. EEK.

Until his blood infection gets under control, I will keep worrying. But his appetite is back, even if he's on a liquid diet, so that seems to also be a good sign.

We're just taking it one day at a time and celebrating the small victories.

My Dad had one blood transfusion yesterday and then had his gallbladder removed.

Today, they moved him out of ICU. They said his blood infection is nearly gone. Yay.

BUT, they did some more tests today on his chest, because he still has shortness of breath. Now they're checking for Congestive Heart Failure.

Jeez.

But he is eating and sounding so much better.

 

Glad his surgery went well. And the infection is waning. Prayers for his further recovery.

They have his blood infection under control, and now it's a matter of his lung function improving for him to be able to go home.

He told my Mom that he was being released today, but when my sister took my Mom to the hospital they found out that he must have misunderstood, so I'm waiting to hear back from my sister.

That's the one thing that's bothering us the most though, he doesn't seem to be as perky, he's talking slower than he usually does, and he doesn't seem as sharp as he once was (like he seems easily confused now)....

So, that's all I know for now.

This whole ordeal may have taken too much out of him. I'm worried he's not going to fully recover everything.

 

my continued prayers and support are with you, sweets. one day at a time :freehug:and yes, I'm sure this has been quite an ordeal and has zapped him of much energy. keep him comfortable and keep praying for the knowledge for his care givers to take the best care of him. try not to worry and stress. I know it's hard!

 

Sorry to read that, girl. Sometimes infections leaving can still take a temporary toll on the body, yeah? Hospitals scenery too can perpetuate lethargy...the food..lack of sunshine. Totally rooting for your pappa.

 

Books...infection can cause what you are describing. Sometimes it can even cause major signs of dementia. It's one of first things I always tell families to look for when a loved one seems "off". Once it's completely clear they usually are back to their normal selves.

The different issues he's had can prompt what you are describing as well. Lung issues are exhausting and definitely can impact thinking.

Just being in the hospital can make people really off in their sense of time and what's happened when too.

It's good you are noticing things though. It's always better to voice concerns.

It can take some time, he's been through a lot.

I guess he's coming home tomorrow, but with oxygen and a walker. Both of which my Mom isn't happy with...but she'll deal.

Maybe he will improve mentally when he comes home.

The doctors want to send him to a rehab, but he's refusing to go. I suppose if he's home, that might help him improve quicker.

 

:freehug: hoping and praying things get better, once your father is back at home. nothing is more comforting than the familiarity and comfort of home. be open to the walker and possibly rehab later, if needed.

when my father was in hospice, he really enjoyed the exercise when the physical therapist visited. change is hard, dealing with it with optimism helps the overall situation for all.
