East coast rap hasn't been great since the early 90s. A few outliers like the Rawkus acts and the Roots are exceptions to the rule. I appreciate the Wu-tang, Biggie, and Nas but can just as easily live without them. Yeah motherfucker I said it. The days of establishing rap as a respectable artform are behind us, which leaves the audience at the mercy of record execs looking to cash in on substandard acts. You had bad acts back in the day but the community policed the content and few bought their albums or went to go see them. Since the community no longer exercises quality control over hip-hop, you get all kinds of silly and nihilistic bullshit in your ear. At the same time it's cyclical and there will be another golden age, not like the heyday of NWA, Big Daddy Kane, and Public Enemy but definitely something to make you tip your hat. Think about rock music in 80s, it generally sucked especially when you compare to what came before (Led Zep, Stones) and after (radiohead, Arcade Fire). Rap is going through a similar phase right now.
"Jeepers Creepers. Where'd you get those peepers? Jeepers Creepers. Where'd you get those eyes?" LOL classic Daffy Duck.
