I haven't seen The Big Bang Theory. And I do notice that there are no black nerds on the show. I remember black actor Phillip Akin played a wheelchair bound scientist who assists actor Jared Martin in The War Of The Worlds tv series(I hated that he was confined to a wheelchair). I remember Asian men and women were the designated tech specialists on a lot of shows(example; Star Trek's Lt. Sulu went from a helmsman to astro physicist to starship commander, Star Trek: Voyager's ensign Kim was a helmsman and an accomplished musician and a virgin, The Goonie's Data was an amateur inventor whose contraptions often malfunction). The show Scorpion has an Asian woman in the cast(I assume that since the Scorpion Group is a growing group, a black male may be added to the cast eventually...or not) Hawaii 5-0 has Masi Oka(and he sometimes has a white girlfriend and Chai McBride has joined the 5-0 team as an older member who will remain single). For the major television networks, this is about achieving the "Friends" effect. The establishment of not only a fan base, but a community. This, of course, based on the writer/creator of these shows and how it is sold to studios who produce them and the networks that pick them up. This is why for a show to promote diversity, it should be shown on independent studios and networks.

 

Raj is asian (I'm assuming ur talking about the foreign guy on Big Bang...I haven't read these posts )

The European concept of asian is much different than ours (light skin, distinct eyes, china, japan, Korea)

As for the black nerd....mainstream America is more comfortable seeing us as thugs or 'blue collar'

Remember, I come from a country technically considered part of Asia (Australasia), so I am actually aware of the American concept of Indians (not being 'Asian"), even though they consider themselves as such.


I don't think the fans of BBT is made up of mainstream Americans, though. I think the shows fans would LOVE IT. The problem might be getting the mainstrem BLACK VIEWER to tune in and embrace it. They feel just as comfortable with the blue-collar characters, too, you know.

That's all fine and dandy until you want to see characters that represent you (young, male, black, college educated, nerdy)

It's sad when you have to dig up the corners of the earth to find black scientists, inventors and academics, because the media doesn't expose you to them on the same level as their white counterparts.

Blacks are more than just physically inclined yanno

Out of all the shows I watch.....agents of shield....flash...arrow....I have yet to see a strong, black genius character

That's the CW in general though, I'll say they're very progressive in terms of allowing a lot of IR couples on their shows. 90210 had my boy Mike from the Wire swimming in white women, but to be fair that network isn't know for its intelligent characters its all about pretty people lol

Well to be fair, they have one nerdy Neurobiologist chick, and have her looking like the bad witch of OZ and a virgin. The hot chick is the dummy. Great stereotypes.

At least they're present and at least there have been attractive smart women as side characters, like the doctor Leonard dated or the doctor Raj dates (but you never see her or them together). There are others but I'm not remembering right now
