I agree. I remember when Cosby began his crusade, and some in the media (mostly white, of course) began slapping the "conservative" label around his neck. And i thought, what the hell? Those aren't "conservative" ideals, those are common fucking sense ideals! Who on earth thinks it's a swell idea to run around having 8 kids and be on welfare? I'm pretty sure 99.9% of Americans of all color believe in some sense that attaining an education is a pretty good idea. I am willing to bet my entire net worth and family on the fact that only a tiny minority of people actually believe that committing crime is a worthwhile virtue. So, why the conservative label? Well, it goes to reinforce George Lakoff's point that conservative Republicans have hijacked the moral debate and structured the semantics of it to their advantage.

Moreover, Cosby isn't quite the Uncle Ruckuses those other buffoons are. I don't recall him ever insinuating slavery somehow was a blessing in disguise. I may be wrong, but he doesn't support the repealing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Or that black men are a group of insolent, hypersexual and hopelessly dysfunction neanderthals. He happens to believe that we have a number of issues that need addressing in the black community (which we do), but unlike Thomas, Sowell and Peterson, Cosby actually has a record of trying to walk the walk, whilst talking the talk.

 

Respectfully disagree, given Rush's history of inflammatory remarks and "code words" racism, Steele's initial comments were right on target and he should have stood by them, and not given in to the pressure he was receiving from the far right to bow down to Rush and Hannity's of the world.

 

I'll be surprised if Steele makes it to the end of 2009.

Republican insiders tell Political Wire that a no confidence vote on RNC Chairman Michael Steele is likely to be called after the NY-20 special election on March 31 -- regardless of whether Republicans win the seat or not.
Katon Dawson, who came in second in the January RNC vote, is said to be quietly organizing a vote and is getting the support of several state party chairmen who want to dump Steele.

 

Yeah he's toast. Whatever.

Steele still lacks a backbone. He won't last a year.

 

Repubs need a new voice.

Rush Limbaugh is not that voice.

Bobby Jindal isn't either.

Neither is Steele.

My Rx for the GOP:

1) A young, white front man. Preferably Iraq War vet with wife and family. Photogenic, Captain America type. A local small-town politician just starting out. You cannot out-hip, or out-diversify the Dems. There is no conservative answer to Obama, Jon Stewart, Maddow. Traditional all-American values all the way. Nickelback sold 5X platinum CDs in a download world, you want that same audience

2) Traditional values out front, cold, techno savvy moves backstage. Here's where you bite Obama's moves; cyber-fund raising, use of social networks, college age people, NOT RACE

3) Front man must be PRAGMATIC. No psycho, right-wing nutjob shit. Cool like Clinton, able to move in different situations i.e. BLACK FOLKS

4) Old men like Gingrich or Bush 43 cabinet must be purged, they are no longer relevant and are largely seen as those who got us in this mess, there needs to be a generational shift

5) Play to base but don't let it define the agenda aka PALIN

6) DO NOT CRITICIZE OBAMA. Because the next logical question is "can you do better?" And you've got nothing

7) This is a 5-15 year plan so dig in
