I can't stand how people think Obama can walk on water and all this shit. Anytime someone makes a joke about him, it's the worst thing in the world. Give me a break. He ain't no different from any other president
One thing I notice about Obama is that he's being made into a celebrity more than any Prime Minister or President I've seen before. I'm not sure if I like the idea of that. But yeah, as far as the jokes... well Obama wouldn't really have any moral high ground since he thinks the Special Olympics are something to laugh about. I can't imagine if Bush said something like that! That being said I don't really have an opinion on Bush nor Obama.
He gets a free pass. The media loves him. It's crap. They should hold him to the same standards they held Bush to, but I doubt that will happen
Obama didn't get a free pass for that comment. It was most definitely talked about. He issued an apology to the Special Olympics and the head of the Special Olympics accepted the apology. As far as comments like that goes, in my opinion, I think that if the world spent less time nitpicking every little stupid thing that someone utters (and I'd like the names of people who have never uttered a stupid thing in their lives) and more time loving each other for our unique selves, this world would be a much happier place. The comment was stupid, but I don't think it was bad enough to warrant a backlash, imo.
Ummmm... OF COURSE he is going to say that he didn't mean anything racist by it! WHY WOULD HE ADMIT TO IT??? Don't be dense. I am tired of these people doing something of this magnitude KNOWING full well how it will be perceived and then claiming that "they didn't realize it was racist"... This is a well known tactic of racist no matter what sort of media in question. They create a racist cartoon, make a racist crack (I.E. nappy headed HOES) and then "pretend" as if they didn't realize there was an issue. HAR, HAR, "snicker, sniker", we got one over on them! *Bump elbows* They know DAMNED well what they are doing and if anyone thinks for a second that this was innocent, then you are EXTREMELY nieve!!!
Where has this outrage been for the past 8 years? [/quote] Is this not just being plain naive? While I accept suggesting George Bush is an ape is not pleasant. It really is another way of saying they don't agree with his policies, and saying he is an idiot. In the racially sensitive society we live in, connecting a white male with an ape is generally not frowned upon, as it does not have racial connatations. So really when you say" where is the outrage for the last eight years", its because calling a white man an ape has no way near the stigma attached to it as calling a black man an ape. And a lot people will not batter an eyelid when they a hear a white male being called an ape. I am playing by society's rules here.
I understand what you're saying. But what I wanna know is: What would be an acceptable way to make fun of Obama?
no its not funny but 2 racisms dont make it right! is what the brotha saying. funny how liberals dont want conservatives to call them stupid, anti american, traitor liberals, but they want to hurl attacks at conservatives and others and thing it ok. the cartoon was in poor taste but if you look in the leftist New Yorker magazine there was a cartoon about Obama that was racist from the left and yet no one here got angry nor when a white liberal cartoonist ran a racist Aunt Jemima cartoon about Condi Rice no one got upset double standard or typical idiot leftists?
Jon Stewart's been doing a pretty good job of it, making fun of him when his actions are inconsistent with what he said campaigning, making fun of him for being too calm, and making fun of his ears. A lot of people have gone for the ears. I realize you're not an Obama supporter, but any time someone gets this much of the vote, you have to expect people to be too happy with him for awhile to want to make as many jokes. Bush got lots of jokes because, frankly, everyone hated him -- but still, that didn't happen much until years into his presidency. If you're expecting pairity between the way people laughed at Bush at the end of his presidency with jokes about Obama now, you're going to be disappointed, and that has nothing whatsoever to do with his race.
Comparing a white man to an ape/chimp just isnt the same as comparing a black man to one. There isnt the history of violence and oppression behind it. One of the reasons slavery was allowed/tolerated was because black people were considered unhuman and apelike. And I am not just defending Obama blindly. I really dont care for the man or his politics. I just found the cartoon painful to look at. The real incident was horrendous and it just isnt funny.
There was no comparison of Barack Obama to a monkey in the sketch. The reader would have to infer that on his own. Bush was compared directly, with no subtlety, in an intentionally insulting manner, to a chimp many, many times by the exact same crowd who is complaining about this cartoon. It comes down to how the person who is ridiculed deals with it, doesn't it? I long for the day that black people respond to racial slurs or the way whites respond when called a honky--a dismissive chuckle.
And as for longing for a day, personally I long for the day when I stop hearing and seeing black men shot in the back while laying prone in handcuffs. I guess that is just the difference between us.
I would expect more of you dude... There does not have to be a DIRECT comparison to someone to put 2 and 2 together and make the correlation. He knows enough NOT to make a direct comparison BECAUSE HE KNOWS about the history of attributing blacks to simians. It was done in an indirect way on purpose so that when the shtf (and of course did), he can feign ignorance and suffer nothing for it. *Wink, wink* The fact that the publisher allowed that to go out says a lot about them. Why would being called a honky hurt white people? There is no damaging history behind it, therefore of course they will laugh it off. I would too if I was white because it wouldn't mean crap to me! Being black however and suffering years of abuse even to this day gives a bit more weight to the N word however. Basic common sense... BLACK people shouldn't even use that word as a so called "term of endearment", let alone whites! So I think it will be awhile before blacks can just "laugh" at racial slurs as it still hits too close to home.
