Gotta give props to Obama, the Navy and this brave Captain. Bold move by Obama because had this been screwed up he would have suffered BIG TIME politically.

While nation after nation has been paying ransoms, the US kicked some Pirate ass!

"It was one of the earliest tests of the new American president --
the result -- a dramatic and successful rescue operation by U.S. Special Operations forces -- left Obama with an early victory that could help build confidence in his ability to direct military actions abroad. "

My first thought was to blow them out of the water, unfortunately they had that brave captain on the boat with them. I am glad he going home safe and sound.

What I am concern about are the few large ships that the pirates use to launch those small ships to take over the foreign freighters for ransom.

I read today that the US is now considering going after Pirate bases in Somalia.

evidently these somalian pirates still have at least 100 hostages from a variety of countries...it was a very bold move to send in navy snipers...they did what they are trained to do and the outcome was a success...the news reports now are concerning retaliation from the pirates...obviously this is not the end of the story...we aren't going to be able to sweep this one under the rug...i will be curious to see what the next move is from the US...

    Yarrrrr, matey!

Despite my love for my fictional pirate brothers, I'm glad this ended well. Real pirates are nowhere near as cool, sadly.

I'm glad the captain was returned safely. I wish these shipping companies would take more responsibility for their own protection and safety instead of relying on the military to protect them.

The training provided to the crew by their shipping company and the union allowed them to retake their ship from the armed pirates without weapons of their own.

    yeah

the US Navy defeated the Japanese Imperial Navy in the Pacific but couldn't blow a rinky-dink boat of pirates out of the water...

    Madness

    ;)

That's fine. But what were the US warships doing there?

NAVCEN (US Navy portion of CENTCOM = Central Command), patrols the waters of Africa and the Middle East on a continuous basis.

Me too. I think the pirates will be less likely to pick on a US ship in the future though. Take the low-hanging-fruit instead.

This makes me a tad sad... I know this is totally off subject but I am currently reading the One Piece Manga and started liking pirates not by much but still... :/ I guess fantasy can't be reality..

Well Red Fox (like the user name) you can find a silver lining here: surely this episode will hit the big screen in a year or so. The whole pirate-thing will be somewhat glamorized.

The question is, who will play the role of the young Somali pirates? Ludacris comes to mind...

    No.

His complexion doesn't look Somali at all.

Someone like Djimon Honsou would fit the bill.

    Both are disqualified because:

    1. The Pirates were only teenagers
    2. They probably had no muscle mass to speak of
