I look at martial arts like Aikido, Tai Chi Chuan, several gung Fu systems as the gentle arts that one can still practice well into advance age. I'm only 27 now, but if I live long into advance age these art forms gives me the inspiration to continue the study of martial arts until I'm in the ground.
Oddly enough since martial arts in China have been damaged by the Communists during the Cultural Revolution in the 60s. That's where modern (generic) wushu came from. Prior to that, there were hundreds of kung fu styles. During that time, many masters had left for Hong Kong, Taiwan, other Asian countries, Europe, Australia, US etc... Many styles have been lost. Mainly, martial arts in China are WuShu and Sanda kickboxing(translated to free strikes). However, it seems as if traditional martial arts are making a resurgence in China.

My Instructor and the Grandmaster Blackbelt79, this information is for you: My Instructor http://www.frankhargrove.com/fdrh.cfm.htm The Grandmaster Shugoro Nakazato as presented by Kyoshi Doug Perry, Kyoshi Hargroves top student. http://www.shorinryushorinkan.com/lineage.htm
Black Belt Test Reuirements Blackbelt79: Here is a sample of the training requirements I must meet to test for black belt later this year. Any motivational advice? http://www.frankhargrove.com/blackbelt1.cfm.html The following below are all the Katas I must master. http://www.frankhargrove.com/katas.cfm.htm Osu
At least you know what your requirements are. I must say train an hour a day everyday when not in class, this will help improve memory. Work twice as hard for the techniques on the ones your having trouble with. Try to find a partner to train while your training outside of class. As long as you put the work in, everything should be fine.
Thanks My Brother BlackBelt79, I appreciate very much the advice you have given. I will be honest with you sometimes I feel so overwhelmed. Pushing the envelope to meet the next level of performance can be challenging. You understand this and I'm learning to redefine myself. Being the best that you can be brings rewards, but it can take it's toll. For me to do this and pursue a degree, work and have time for the wife is the most challenging of times. I wish sometimes I can sit around all day in front of a T.V. and do nothing as so many, but the one thing I have learned as a martial artists, the best things in this life never comes free. That is why so few do this. Again, thanks for the advice, you are a true "Brother of the Brotherhood".
Yeah I know it's challenging, but it will push you beyond your comfort zone. I learn a lot of things from Martial Arts especially when you think it's over, it's not really over. All I did was sit around in front of a T.V. & it got me nothing. I should be at least a 4th Degree Black Belt. Of course since I"m 5'7 male & hearing that women don't like guys my height, and I'll be 30 come this sunday & I plan on going back to college to get my degree, being in the Martial Arts I'll be more confident, more disciplined to overcome the obstacles.
While I was in the Navy I studied Shido-Kan Karate and kickboxing. When I got out I studied Brazilian Jiujitsu, Filipino boxing and Wing chun kung fu which I have been training in of and on for about 13 years.
Wow.Impressive. Back in the day my judo instructor was a nut who listened to bird noises 2 hours a day, every day of the week - he said it helped him concentrate. I also teach judo at a sport&art teenage center but I'm not that weird - actually kids like me a lot:-D,or at least that's what they say:smt003
This was my shyte back in the day..... Big ups to the heads that do this on this thread for real
Aside from all the fake movie BS, a little treat for the true professionals here on a master martial artist. I have a great deal of respect for the Koreans as I do for all Asians. This man is truly a master in the arts. Read his history. http://www.hanmudo.com
A part of my multi-cutural tolerance and understanding, comes from learning TKD from a Korean master. He really emphasized Korean traditions and morality, during our classes. That was the first time I heard the term 'filial piety.'
Pettyofficerj, true martial artists (not these wussie-cookie cutter types here in America) are special kinds of people. In Asia, they are the true Warrior/Scholars, because they live it as a way of life. This way of life is taught from pre-schools to the University and military. In the future, the Asians are going to strip the West, because of our own arrogance and ignorance of them. It will be their discipline that will overcome us. You see it happening now.
