The sickest that I have ever been with the flu was a few years ago when they missed the strain of flu in the vaccine. It was awful. It's definitely not a 100% thing. Plus, if you end up being sick for a week, what's it to me?? It doesn't bother me if you are sick. :smt042

You are just too cute. I just felt the need to say that. ;)

    Spending Time With A Friend

I'm going to spend some time with a friend today that I haven't seen in three years. The problem is that everytime I look at her, she gives me a headache for some reason. She's sweet, but for some reason, I get this impression that she's crazy.

So, the game plan is get some new pictures and record some video in the process. That way, life will be good for this beautiful, cold day.

My thoughts exactly. It shouldn't bother anyone else if I end up sick.

Plus, the flu offers a nice weight loss plan. LOL!! JK.

:smt042 That's true. Nothing like the flu to drop a few pounds. I can normally only eat popsicles and drink OJ if I get a cold or the flu. Nothing else even tastes right. :smt009

I know. I mainly eat food (when I can) because I know I have to, but it doesn't taste right.

The rest of this is addressed to Tam, so everyone who doesn't like long posts can feel free to skip it. :D

Tam if you know how to use it I believe they're an asset to have around and really can give you a good sense of security... and when I say know how to use it I don't just mean know how to pull the trigger, you should familiarize yourself with cleaning it, and engage in sufficient target practice to become proficient at it. Just keep it locked up when you aren't using it. A small lock box or safe with an electronic lock under the bed works well. I think most, if not all, laws require you to store it unloaded, but personally I'm not doing that, if it's locked up that's good enough. Both my kids are old to know better than to mess with a loaded gun, so that's not a concern for me. But in general if you teach a kid to respect any firearm, you won't have to worry about them messing with it, I think when you try to hide them or refuse to familarize a child with them that they get curious and are more likely to get into trouble with one. As a child I remember there being loaded rifles stacked in the corners of the parlor all the time, and I knew better than to even think about touching one without permission, that was a guaranteed whuppin' & I knew they were dangerous and not to be toyed with. I also knew all I had to do was ask and one of the men in my family would take me out for target practice, we had a range on the property and were encouraged to use it. A child who understands what a gun can do, and knows how to handle one properly, will have more respect for them.

I'd encourage you to check out several options before buying, as you get a better feel for them when they're in your hand. A lot of people talk favorably about Glocks for instance, but they just feel barrel heavy to me, and Berettas are also not weighted to my liking, so I went with a Ruger .45 ACP and it has a really solid feel, nicely weighted and I'm comfortable with it. I have average sized hands and it fits mine nicely. Desert Eagle's are really gorgeous pieces of hardware, but they will set you back about double what I paid for my Ruger, and despite liking them alot I just couldn't see spending that kinda cash for something that's gonna spend most of its time locked up.

I was raised on target practice with a variety of weapons, and my grandfather always gave me tips, and the one thing he told me that I think is excellent advice is "if you ever have to shoot someone, aim for the midsection as you're likely to at least hit them even if you're nervous and aren't terribly proficient with your aim. Too many people try to get fancy and aim for the head or legs and hit nothing, and that does you no damn good at all, cause then you got a pissed off intruder who knows you're a lousy shot". Some people can keep a steady hand in that type of situation and some can't, if you think you can't, you can always hedge your bets by adding a laser sight, though they'll set you back a bit. A lot of die hard gun enthusiasts will give you crap about laser sights, but it's better to hit what you're aiming at, so who gives a shit what they think anyway. If you think you need one to even the odds, or assure your aim, buy one. I don't use one, but I've hunted enough to not get flustered about shooting something or someone. Someone breaks in my house, I've got zero problem killing them, as far as I'm concerned they forfeited their right to continue breathing the instant they set foot on my property without permission. I also have 3 dogs, so the likelihood of anyone getting in unannounced is slim to none.

Oh, one last thing, I don't remember if Texas has the concealed carry law or not, but if they do I'd advise you take the class for that as well. If you're a single woman, I think it's just wise to take extra precautions, especially if you don't feel you live in a safe area.

I would so rep you for this post, if I could.

I grew up around guns. Like you, my brother took me to shooting ranges, taught me how to properly handle a gun, and told me the dangers. I never ever touched one without an adult around and I always made sure the safety was on.

When my nephew, who is 6 years younger than me, was old enough, my brother showed him his collection of guns (because my nephew lived with us) and taught him to respect the guns and to never touch them.

    We never had an issue.

Like you said, I believe that if you hide the gun(s) from your kids, it will only lead to curiosity on their part and a possible tragic accident. If you show them the guns, teach them about proper handling and the dangers, and to respect them, it will go a long way to keeping everyone safe. :smt023
