Republicans Want Obama to lose 2012 at all costs

Republicans keep insisting on a short-term budget deal that brings this debt-ceiling debate up again in the heat of the 2012 presidential election season.

This is turing out to be a huge mess.

 

Entirely predictable.

Obama is way too much center right for my taste, I'd like to see a real progressive in the job. But with our two party system, no one's going to challenge him.

However the Teabaggers may have made a serious error in judgement - when even McCain comes out and tells them they're nuts, you can be sure the real powers in the Rethuglican party are quaking in their boots over the actions of the nutcases

Agreed. The House Republicans are spending time working on a deal that the Senate Dems have said they won't pass and Obama would veto if they did? It's a shameless and inexcusable to score politial points at the expense of Main Street.

Generally my feeling too. Although I am also wary that Republicans could "win" anyway -- not necessarily by ousting Obama (although that could happen), but simply by reframing the debate so that discussion takes place even farther right than before.

Ideas which would have seemed ridiculous even when Reagan was in office (for example, the idea that we should never have any tax increases ever -- Reagan raised taxes 11 times) are now commonplace as the discussion shifts farther to the right every time Republicans do something like this.

It could eventually backfire on them. I'm just saying it's been working well for a long time now.

 

Things are looking grim, by the way. Our standard of living would have to be altered beyond August 2nd if we default. Mitch McConnell still puts the blame on the Democrats.

You're right on the money, from where I sit. NIXON was to the left of most of these guys. They started reframing the debate with the Hyde Amendment back right after Roe was decided, and they've moved the debate in all areas further to the right since then. About the only group who have been able to move left are LGBTQIA rights, but they've had to fight long, hard, and incessantly to get to where they are - which still isn't where they should be.

 

Republicans are just so good at reframing the debate using political tactics and well crafted language. "Death tax" vs "estate tax", "pro-life" vs "anti-abortion", "tax relief" vs "tax cut", "job creators" vs "the rich."

Forget the actual outcomes for a second. Once media figures or even liberal politicians start using this language (and in many cases, they have), the battle is already over, and the conservatives have won.

On another note, I wonder how liberal this site is. I assume it's quite liberal, as the type of person specifically seeking love outside the traditional confines presented to them is not likely to be a conservative person. That doesn't mean you can't be or that reasonable people who happen to be conservative aren't welcome, of course.

 

Really annoying how everyone knows how ridiculous this entire thing even is, yet it's still happening this close to August 2nd. I think they're going to default. But I'm glad SJL called it out. This is pretty much just rooted in racism. The reason this is being held up is pretty much because there are too many Tea Party members who are representatives of Congress and John Boehner is an idiot. I hope in 2012 we bring back Pelosi as Speaker.

Support is increasing for Obama to invoke the 14th Amendment, although it's a dangerous move which would result in an inquiry to get him impeached. If we take that route, the country would avoid a default, but our credit rating might still be downgraded to AA.

Perhaps after the 2012 elections when Pelosi gains political power once again, tax increases on the wealthy could occur and our deficits would be lower. Maybe we could regain our AAA credit rating a few years from now, ideally by 2016.

 

Too late. It's been signed and it'll only cost the taxpayers a modest $17 million. Paniro, all decisions considered would have been dreadful for the country. Rather have everything become more expensive and downgrade the credit rating or relish that something has been done to avert the situation altogether?

 

Everyone would have to take a hit. That also includes defense spending. The military doesn't need billions upon billions to support itself. Want to cut more? Why not close the based in countries like Japan and South Korea?

Plus, it would be wise to drive some revenue on the table by legalizing marijuana. That would produce at least $2-6 billion annually. People often are too short-sighted with cutting everything. There has to be some levels of revenue generation.

 

Conservatibes believe letting the rich keep all their money will produce jobs. They're right. Just not here. Unemployment is going to double but these dummies are too short sighted to see it. Hope they like hunting their food.

 

That's easier said than done. You have to remember, the GOP is more willing to give more breaks to the wealth 2% of the population because "they produce jobs". That's clearly false. While they are in the position to do that easily, the fact is that middle class business owners are the ones doing all the hiring.

The other issue is outsourcing jobs overseas which is very problematic. Businesses like to do that to keep costs low and maximize profit. We can't limit their business practices, but we can reward companies who hire within the US and also make sure their products are US made. Tax breaks to those companies while little consideration for other companies. It's a fair deal here.

Cutting welfare won't really solve it at all. Perhaps giving it more restrictions would curb it. But that's all workable in theory. In practice, you're only making the system all the more a headache.

Exactly. And that's why we should reward businesses that don't outsource their businesses nor employees and simply let other companies do what they want all the while losing any means of getting breaks.
