We are not paying a big price that you are asking for. You would have my generation losing their lives for a moronic action. No amount of money is worth my generation's death for a war. That's just plain and simple. The only reason I see when older folk talk about war is because they wouldn't be there in that war. Talk is cheap and free when your butt isn't the one that has an iota of a chance to be drafted on the front line. We got a lot of parents that would disagree with you and a lot of millennials that don't want to be in sucha war with the 6th most populated country armed with nukes.
So what's worth dying for as an American?? If U.S. military power never results in negative consequences for our enemies, guess what?? Our entire arsenal might as well be Tinker toys. Iraq was a meat grinder because we tried to fight on the cheap with too few troops. Colin Powell told the Joint Chief Staff we needed at least 500,000 troops to invade and occupy Iraq. Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld went in with a tenth of that. And people are talking as if Pakistan is a major oil producer. They aren't. They're a shithole that bought stolen nuclear weapons technology from the North Koreans. It would be VERY easy to destroy Pakistan's nuclear stockpiles, and not one country in the world would commit soldiers in their defense.
This racist and dangerously nationalistic. And the people least likely to fight are always the first one who want to go. this is the first time in our history as a country we have gone to way and every day Americans have seen no tangible impact. Americans have not participated in this conflict. Not by capital, not by sacrifice, not by taxes, (taxes are the lowest they have been in 60 years). And lets keep this in mind. Whether you agree with Iraq or not, whether you say we were lied to or not. The reason why we were able to go into Iraq is because Americans wanted blood...and this blood thirst made them easily agreeable. ...but all those people who wanted blood were not the ones who are going to have to shed it.
Uh the U.S. hasn't had military conscription since 1973 or did you not know that? And did you bother to read my initial post where I specifically mentioned no ground troop mobilization?
i always wonder when i see canadians posting in these threads if they really understand what it means to be an american...how americans feel about their hard earned tax dollars going to war...if they know or understand just how our poor live...what it must be like to be sick in america and not have any healthcare... just asking...you all have it made...the usa is right here to protect you if anything goes wrong...must be nice...we will send up our army...our navy...our marines...to protect good ole canada... as far as politics go...it is a lose/lose situation...unless there is a revolution we will continue on the same path...
americans wanted bin laden...let's not get it twisted...you are out of your mind if you think that these wars have not impacted the american people...
I have to spread the love before I can rep you again, but well said. I'm tired of watching young men and women march off to war to be maimed and killed in the name of chest-thumping. There's a reason why it's called the Department of DEFENSE.
If U.S. military power results in negative money in the bank for the usa, guess what?? The U.S. will fall! I love the example of picking Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld They went into the wrong country and had us lose money, time and of course lives. Rumsfield being fired. Obama being elected on the hate of a president being a warmonger that likes blank checks. But hey that's your pick. Mind you, They(iraq) aren't the world's sixth populated country. They have no nukes. The usa more than likely doesn't know where the nukes are in pakistan. Not only this but as you commented they are a "shithole". There is no financial and strategic reasons to take on a "shithole" in such a unstable environment. This is all happening while the chinese are growing in power and this would bring us into three wars. There is a reason why the president doesn't follow these kinds of moronic actions. two wars are enough. Honestly, people who are saying this are simply warmongers that don't have teeth in the game. It isn't enough that we are in two battles/wars that are unpaid for. It isn't enough that our economy is falling apart. people want another fucking war. We are spread too thin and simply can't do it.
Clearly, you have missed my point that the USA can pull a military conscription in the future. They did it in 1973 and during ww2. This isn't 1973 . I would be pulled into such a conscription. Hence the people without teeth in the fight have no issues with the war. If you lived during 1960's you could have said Uh the U.S. hasn't had military conscription since WW2 or did you not know that? what happen in 1973? Did you remember filling out the selective service form for college or are you too old to remember? Do you honestly believe we can have such a war without boots on the ground and having an over worked military that is split into already two wars. We couldn't even take over iraq without boots on the ground.
That's right, it isn't 1973. Congratulations, you're finally getting it and this isn't about shitting your pants over getting pulled into a non-existent draft. It's about responding to threats against the United States. If you want to balance your argument on a moot point be my guest, but it only takes minimal knowledge of the American military to know that your words carry no weight. And for future reference, Nixon ended the draft in 1973. We're pulling out of Iraq, leaving a minimal ground force or did you not know that? Pakistan needs a message to be sent, a few strategic targets being hit by predator drones should do it.
The more I hear statements like this the more I am aware of how little the people in countries know about their own countries(as if the concept of a country even exists anymore) Corporate interests are served by military actions than the will of the people. What would bombing Pakistan do exactly? Kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people like they did in Iraq who just had the bad luck of living in a country where their leaders made shit choices they probably didn't agree with. Too often we are lead to believe that we have enemies when we don't have enemies the owners have enemies and they use the lives and bodies of the poor to fight them. And not just in America, in every fucking country from here to Liberia from their to New Zealand. People don't matter to those in power because they are never held accountable for their actions. Only the poor suffer. So before you say dumb shit like bomb them think about the voiceless innocents who want nothing but peace from their lives.
Come on paniro!!! This bullshit is being fed to you by the oil companies via Faux News and the WSJ. These are the facts: The U.S. consumes roughly 25% of the world's produced oil, yet we as a country hold less than 3% of the world's proven oil reserves. To quote President Obama, 'this is MATH.' There's no way we can drill our way to foreign oil independence. And since the U.S. doesn't have a nationalized state owned oil company, any new reserves that are tapped, (oil companies are sitting on oil leases right now that they refuse to drill!!!) will be sold on the international market. Unless the world cost of a barrel of oil drops, new oil drilled in the U.S. won't drop the price of international oil one penny. Oil companies are playing Conservatives for fools. Dark Knight, I agree that many of the so-called 'enemies' of the U.S. are classified as such by corporate interests, but in some cases like Iran and Pakistan, their hostilities against the U.S. aren't financially driven. They are ideological and political. Pakistan and Iran intelligence train irregular forces and send them into Iraq and Afghanistan to kill American troops because they HATE us, not because we are encroaching on their financial interests.
Our ideology and political differences are fueled by corporate interests. We're capitalist first second and third and then we're Americans.
Our Constitution is a political document, not a corporate mission statement. The only 'corporate' interests in fighting Pakistan would be from military contractors and arms manufacturers, like in Vietnam.
The constitution is a joke. Its just words on paper that means nothing anymore. Illegal search and seizures are absolutely allowed under the patriot act. The right to bare arms is a joke as well since individual states can choose to recognize it or not. Good people in cities like Chicago aren't allowed to own guns while criminals can. The only part that seems to be true anymore is life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Meaning if you value your life you better swallow that bs about liberty and you'll have the freedom to pursue happiness all you want but only a handful of you will ever achieve it. And trust me Pakistan is safe only because we don't want anything from them right now other than to use them for a military base for future conflicts.
The damage that spill did to the local eco system cost a hell of a lot more than 4 bucks a gallon my friend. Why do use liberal as an insult. So what if were a liberal? Btw I'm a progressive. Big difference my friend.
lippy has her tree hugging liberal moments...i still think we should drill...i blame BP for the oil spill...those engineers knew that something like this could happen...i also blame BP for not cleaning up the mess faster... maybe this is an odd way of looking at things and i am not a "sky falling in" type of person but i think that we need more strategic thinking...if we do this then what is the outcome...the new world trade center in nyc is a prime example...that building is being built with the what ifs in mind...we should be able to drill without error
Non-existent does not mean it could not happen. The other issue is again this would be the third war. Minimal knowledge would indicate to one that going to war with Pakistan would not be a good idea given the status of the usa today. For words carrying no weight. I am sure the USA president will not be bombing Pakistan any time soon for many of the reasons I have mentioned. This is a person who has more information on the idea. Do you really think that it can't be reimplemented? What is the purpose of having a selective service form? They don't need it but for that. oh wow! We are pulling out after loss of money and lives:smt038 a severely damaged reputation and an economy that can slip back into a recession. We are broke. ok. broke. negative in the bank account. Those minimal ground force that will be costing us money on top of an unpaid war will not assist us in this debt that is bring down the U.S.A. or did you not know that? sounds like someone is reading from the bush doctrine. more wars and blank checks!
