Make an argument and support it with follow up coherent sentences. That's the 'talent' he's referring to. You want to have these discussions where you personally don't 'discuss' anything.
I need to understand where the other side is coming from before I can give my own thoughts. I tried to learn about the other side but was met with pictures of jellyfish, insults and a lack of explanation for specific views. This thread was NOT about my opinions or countering anyone else's. I just wanted to learn why people disliked the tea party.
Thank you. That's the sort of lack of "talent" I was referring to in my post. "Deciphering" what I meant didn't require much "talent" at all..just the ability to read and comprehend. You're also correct, discussions are inter-active, with both people participating, not asking questions and hoping for an opportunity to counter the other person. You state your opinion in more than sound bits, but through enough detail and explanation that people can respond to you. That's the basis of discourse and discussion.
Google is your friend. Overseas news sources like the British papers are your friend. So are websites both in favor and against the tea party. If you want to be an informed voter, it's on you to do the research necessary to arrive at intelligent conclusions. If you ask a group of people to spoon feed you information, that's going to be filtered through the lens of their opinion. The Tea Party is homophobic, racist, anti-choice, pro-corporation, pro big banks, pro the 1%, and anti-common sense. That's why I don't like them. But if you want me to spoon feed you links, that's not happening. You can find these things out pretty quickly on your own. Seriously, these people think Bachmann's husband is straight, that his pray away the gay ministry works, that she's a misunderstood genius, that Rick Perry has a brain....does anymore really need to be said?
No offense and just out of curiosity, but where do you reside that you feel that you have to come to an online forum in order to learn other peoples' opinions and views on political issues? Are there no people where you live that hold opinions that differ from your own that you interact with and have conversations with on a regular basis? I find it somewhat unusual that someone would spend as much time as you do here always wanting to talk politics but knows so little about how or why others have different opinions on politics.
GA - NY - NJ Not really I guess it is kind of strange to learn about other peoples political views on a political forum.
You didn't ask me Ra, but if I may, I'd like to comment (not on Velkrum's behalf, but on my own.) I have found a benefit to belonging to this forum that I didn't expect and that is that it fills a void in my life. I actually do not have opportunities to talk with people about politics, finance, sports, current events, etc. For some reason, I'm in a very dry season of my life: I am not currently in a relationship, I live in a building with only 3 other tenants, my desk at work is somewhat isolated from other people in my office (I am the admin asst) and my friends are all in relationships or married and consumed with family, etc. That gets old after awhile. While I love girly talk (family, kids, decorating, cooking, shopping, etc.), I want to talk about other things they simply aren't as interested in. So this forum is an outlet for me to meet new people, discuss a variety of topics and just interact with people who at least in one way (the whole WWBM thing) think like me, yet have, at times, very different opinions from my own. It's enlightening and interesting to learn how other people view things, because most of the people I am aquainted with think much as I do. Except that I am changing and growing and they are not. I kind of fell into this by accident, but I'm enjoying it in a way I didn't expect. I'm sure there are other sites I could join to get what I get here, but I don't want to spend all my free time online. You may think Velkrum's behavior unusual, but for me, it's very real. :smt102 I now return you to your regularly scheduled program....
So you reside in three different areas and don't interact in real life with people with different POVs than yours? And you wonder why you get the tough reception you have gotten here by some? Especially when you come across as seeming to think your somehow better than most? And this is not a political forum. It's a forum dedicate to relationships between Black men and White women. There just happens to be a section here to discuss politics along with various other sections to discuss various other things that go on in life.
Unlike Velkrum however you have made an effort to openly interact with others here and not completely dismiss them or their opinions as somehow flawed and ignorant from your own. He spends most of his time here in the politics section. He's made it a habit when possible to let it be known that he finds the forum and almost everyone here to be somewhat intellectually or emotionally flawed on some level. Of course it's not perfect but why come here if that is your take of this place? That's what I find unusual about his behavior.
Yes you have. Twice in fact as I recall. But according to him he's only gotten generalizations for answers to his questions. :smt102
Yeah, I'm not sure what part of "The Tea Party is homophobic, racist, anti-choice, pro-corporation, pro big banks, pro the 1%, and anti-common sense" is hard to understand.
It's because those words aren't in their vocabulary, since they believe none of those apply to them. My mother is an admitted member of the Tea Party. She swears UP AND DOWN that she's not racist because she likes Herman Cain (won't go there), and has a few black friends (but they aren't friends...they're co-workers). The *n* word is part of her vocabulary, and she always tells me that she'd rather I be with a white guy who works at Burger King than a black guy who happens to be a surgeon. BUT!!!! She's not racist. And to add to that, this is part of an e-mail I got from her (it was to me and several cousins) about her trip to Washington, D.C. *facepalm* Yeah, Mom, Tea Party Member, Herman Cain worshiper, Adoring fan of Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck (so glad he's off air!!!)....you're not racist. Nope. Not at all. If velkrum really has no idea why people hate the tea party (which I doubt!), then he's just not paying attention.
