It doesn't take much common sense to know that a person cannot openly state that he or she (mostly he) in any workplace and then we're talking other complicated measures such some businesses won't recognize same-sex partners, so benefits won't necessary apply to couples.

That's true.. I agree 100% it's not the same - but - it's important that this fact should not cloud whether we support anti-discrimination measures and progress.

The universe is very complicated. Blacks, gays, gypsies in europe, the rohingi in myanmar, the dalit in india, jews in russia, palestinians -- all oppressed or persecuted people have different stories and different degrees of oppression and persecution.

(And none of these oppressed people are perfectly innocent themselves!)

What we can unite around is that oppression and persecution is wrong... and equality and dignity for all is right. Also we can hopefully unite around the concept that if the next guy in your society isn't free, you aren't truly free either.

No one should be persecuted for the way they're born. If you wouldn't hate on a baby, you shouldn't hate on a person for how they were born.

At my last job there were a couple of italian guys who actually compared the way italians are "discriminated against" today to what blacks go through. :mrgreen: I think sometimes it's more productive to focus on what you're against - discrimination and inequality in general - than what you're for (freedom for your people).

Ok but you didn't answer his point that wth does this have to do with work since we don't declare our sexuality. In fact, you even agreed with him.

On the second part, benefits don't apply to hereto-sexual couples either. So unmarried couples are discriminated too.

 

You don't have to declare much in the workplace, but don't ignore the fact that there are discriminatory practices by some (private) businesses where they are allowed to discriminate because of who they are. Still, discrimination is still discrimination.

And also, there are businesses that DO grant couples benefits, but mainly towards married heterosexual couples. Some businesses would extend it to domestic partners of the heterosexual kind, but wouldn't give it off to the same-sex couples. Plus, your last part didn't really go hand in hand with the argument, since, there are tax exempt statuses for employers at their workplace.

I personally wouldn't have too much to shit on if religion was kept out of politics, thus sinking into the personal lives of others by restricting their rights or access. Granted, there were rogues, and yes I'll use rogues in this case to describe certain individuals within those institutions who broke ranks from oppressive natures and advanced everything through secular reasoning. Hardly anthing religiously influenced. They were more like speakeasies for those who who wanted to hide and work behind closed doors.

Whereas the vast majority of those religious people were quicker to judge, maim, pillage, and even suppress the rights of others and reinforcing fear. Yes, the black church had their moments, but their roles were significantly less than the larger, secular voices that spoke up for civil rights for everyone. They just wanted refuge when they couldn't cope with the harsh realities of life.

Nowadays, the black church is nothing more but an excuse to live in mental shambles, shackled to the past and delusions. It's not shitting on religion in this regard. It's just fact when observing. When we see more churches than hospitals and the only real mission is to convert people, then something is wrong here.

So in short, I won't shit on religion if religion isn't influenced in the larger scope of our secular society.

Come on fam more churches than hospitals? Well no duh hospitals cost millions to run. Most churches barely cost thousands to keep them operational.

Actually DK, that is simply incorrect. Given the fact that churches are of tax exempt status, the cost of them is actually in the billions. Think about it for a minute: since people can itemize churches, they can receive tax exempt status, thus we, the taxpayer, are footing the bill.

There is nothing wrong with people being more charitable and what have you, but there's something wrong with those people who get a pass for exercising their right to enforce their not-so kind views in to the public eyes, especially when we're dealing with political lobbying. The minority voices are generally those who truly act in virtuous deeds and would rather keep their beliefs as a personal matter and not instill it on the public.

Whereas the majority of that group, are the majority voices (after all, there are more conservative evangelical types in this country than secular Christians/Muslims/Jews etc... and have the most clout in their churches.

And be careful with the word of Christ statement. Even he advocated violence, regardless of which version you read. I'll be glad to see a true peace loving person (and they do exists), but Jesus is perhaps the most overrated figure in history, be it he's a fictional figure or a figure whom the Bible based the myth off of.
