The Belgian hackers posted a video online addressed to “al Qaida, the Islamic State and other terrorists.” In the video, which was uploaded to the hacking group’s YouTube account, a man wearing a Guy Fawkes mask and a hood says in a distorted French voice, “We are declaring war against you, the terrorists.” In declaring cyber war against jihadist groups, Anonymous said it would protect free speech from “obscurantism and mysticism.” The hackers expressed their disgust at the “cowardly and despicable acts,” and offered their condolences to the families of the murdered victims and said it was now their duty to react. The hacker in the video said that the group will track down and close all accounts on social networks related to suspected terrorists. As part of the hackers’ war against jihadists, they have created a Twitter account and asked its followers to report Twitter accounts of suspected terrorists. The hackers have already collected more than 100 accounts on Twitter to target. The hackers have already taken responsibility for bringing down Ansar-Alhaqq.net with a distributed denial of-service attack. The religious website is published in French and Arabic and flies the Islamic State flag. The mysterious hacking group that have declared war on Al Qaeda have previously been linked to online attacks around the world aimed at targeting governments for policies of which the hackers disapprove. Speaking to the New York Daily News, Gabriella Coleman, a professor at Montreal’s McGill University, said that the jihadists are a typical enemy of the hacking group. It is not exactly clear how many members are operating in Anonymous or the identity of the figure in the video. The hackers are a capable outfit previously responsible for hacking websites belonging to government departments, companies, and large organizations. The hackers have declared war, and their message is loud and clear, “We will find you.”
We actually covered this in the (silly-titled) "Here we Go again" thread, however this article appears to contain updates. I love the image of the error. Great stuff. Going to borrow this and post it to another site we are discussing this on.
I don't know about you guys, but the idea of vigilante blackhat hackers dispensing justice as they see fit scares the shit out of me.:?
Really? Why? How is it any different than a centralized entity that does the same thing with far more devistating results than read emails
In most Western countries there's a level of accountability when you take aggressive retaliatory steps against an enemy. Even the CIA has a level of oversight. These guys are completely rogue. I wouldn't even want some random living on my block deciding who deserves justice and who doesn't. When I was kid I used to have a couple of friends who could rationalize stealing/shoplifting because of the level of economic exploitation done by global conglomerates providing the goods they were about to steal. By their way of thinking, stealing merchandize from a retailer was a blow against the establishment.:smt017 Unless you believe in vigilantism, which is just a short step away from anarchy, this militant cyber group is disturbing.
The problem with vigilantes is that they're usually hypocrites (show me a squeaky-clean vigilante and I'll shut up) Heaven forbid someone brings them to 'justice' for the laws they break
They're not rogue as a whole. They have at times in-fact, been outed, arrested, convicted and sentenced. You must not know how Anonymous operates - they are mostly judicious. I gladly ride with them.
So to you, stealing is on par with, let's say, defending an old lady or a child from an attack by some douchebag. I mean, hitting someone is bad, right? So you'd never smack the heck out of a douche for being one and to stop hurting someone else (especially someone who's weaker, or less able than you or the douche). I see.... Well, I would, and that's where we differ, I suppose. BTW, the idea of anarchy always seemed kinda hot to me too. Certainly way hotter than complete submission (outside of the bedroom or a fetish party, that is, lol). "I made a god out of blood, not superiority. I killed the king of deceit, now I sleep in anarchy." (KMFDM) Wow, how fitting, lol.
