okay I happen to own a Off-road Vehicle and I'm a 4wheeler. On a everyday basis my Truck happens to draw alot of attention. Most eyes are wondering what's he doing. True there are not many African American men that drive off road vehicles. Most of my Friends who are Caucasian they don't see a problem with it if anything they really think it's cool. However my some of my Black friends think I'm trying to be something I'm not. One even told me. "Jarell yo Blacks don't be drving no off road" I wasn't surprised to hear this but it did make me a little upset. Most of my black friends are driving older buicks with 22" inch rims playing loud rap. I don't have a problem with that it's what they do. But is it so different to see a black guy driving a off road truck. My mother loves it and thinks it's something awesome.
Yeah, I have gotten that type of response for some of my “hobbies” [black people don’t do that]. I hate how some people place limits on themselves to appease others. To me it’s a big world and if I see something I like, I’m doing it… I’m no 4 wheeler myself but live your life you mud puppy.
Hmmm this is interesting. I guess I really never realized how much you are being criticized for picking a hobby or the clothes you wear, books you read etc. Does it bother you or do you write it off as "small minded people" who just don't WANT know better?
I write it off as people being too scared to try something new out of fear of the unknown. I think nearly all people seek some level of control over their worlds and when we can place people in groups it makes it easier to predict how they will react in our environment giving us some degree of the perception of control. When people do things that are not what others deem as normal - “expected” – I think that challenges the foundation of their worlds causing them to question what they thought was known. Making it unknown. Needless to say, different people have different degrees of how much control they are willing to relinquish before protest becomes a factor. I do think we all have it however. Fear of the unknown. Loss of control.
"Black" people don't do this?! :?: A little saying from Dr.Seuss comes to mind and goes as follows: "Those who matter, don't mind, and those who mind don't matter." So I say drive your truck, onroad, off road, crossroad....... do what pleases YOU! It doesn't matter if other people "approve." I have a voracious appetite for reading and knowledge. If another black man told me stop reading because I was "too nerdy, and trying to be white" would you advise me to stop? No.......... you'd tell me to do what I love! So be yourself, and enjoy your hobbies!
sure we do this, we make up a large part of the Rural Southeast and Texas and many of us ride motorcycles and 4 wheelers
brotha...fuck what the next man has to say. If that's what you like, then more power to you. and as far as black people not off-roading...that's bunk. I'm seriously thinking about getting into that myself.
Puhleeze. The only reason why black don't do more things like offroad and dirt biking is because it ain't cheap. James "Bubba" Stewart is one of the best dirt bike riders out there. I'm probably going to offroad someday with my buddies when the papers right.
Now, I'm sorry Obsidian, I have to disagree with this. Although jeeps and dirt bikes aren't cheap, neither are cars or their rims. I don't think it's because it costs too much because you see bm out spending plenty of money on many other things. I think it's just whatever your preference is. Just like swimming. What's with people saying black people don't like to swim or can't :?: My husband loves to swim and go to the lake. :smt003
Shit we used to run off road to get free. Having the truck is progress! Nice truck by the way. I used love mudding up the Hummers back in the day when I was a soldier.
Nextvision: OT, but just wanted to say I like the your Huey pic Nice to see another Boondocks fan. I just saw the Thugnificent episode yesterday - hilarious! OK, I'm done going off topic...
