It's just some non-MBA's quack theory that the market strips away all humanity and transforms people into commodities and resources rather than sentient beings whose welfare must be taken into account. There's no quantitative truth to that, right?

Well, maybe just the research of a couple of German economists.

According to a release from the universities of Bamberg and Bonn, a study by economists Armin Falk and Nora Szech released in the journal Science found that markets erode people's morality and help them make decisions that look outright awful without the thin veil of commerce. In short, capitalism makes us do some not-so-nice things.

    Capitalism encourages avarice.

An ideal in itself is not evil and does not 'make' us something that we already are not. Capitalism is simply the dangled carrot that awakens the evil within some of us.

Capitalism in theory is great just like communism and socialism unfortunately humans are too corrupt to implement it fairly.

I was thinking the same thing. the bible states (often misquoted) " the LOVE of money is the root of all evil"...

people often say " money is root of all evil" ...that is wrong the correct quote is stated above.

so you guys are sooooo right...at least in my eyes

written like someone who has actually looked at one of the pitfalls of communism

it was an ideal type of government to many people, but like you said, the corruption killed it

as for capitalism, i do believe that the drive to achieve individual 'success' and the corporate mentality is killing off humanity to some degree

more people are concerned with making money or the bottom line of a business, than they are with the welfare of the people

which is why i like where i work..

i probably said it before but we rarely fire people and tend to look after each other. it's a business any way you slice it, but we refer to ourselves as one big family. the corporate agenda gets pushed sometimes, but it's never to the point where you feel as though you have to sacrifice relationships or screw each other over for a profit

not just referring to your company buit every company always say...."one big family." . even ESPN...I have heard them use the phrase from the ESPN family and then this happens.....

    http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/L...-to-manage-costs-cable-sports-giant-cuts-jobs

and this is despite an increase in NET profits....NOT increase in GROSS BUT NET.

that is one fucked up family

I once heard a man who became a millionaire through selling real estate say, "Now, I'm not greedy, but I do love money."
Singer Pearle Bailey said, "I've tried poor and I've tried rich. But I like rich much better."
There are so many cliched annecdotes about money. And the sad truth is that we, as human beings cannot say no.

during the recession, we really didnt let anyone go

like i said..in the 9 years ive been there, ive rarely seen anyone get let go unless they WANTED it

they give you lots of chances to stay there and back up the 'family' claim

people can live without anything else but healthcare, which is kinda why you try to hang onto the workers you have

Capitalism is an economic concept, not a political one.

When you try to organize a society around the free market, or capitalism, your society eventually is going to collapse because the bottom line in capitalism is maximizing profits, not the general well being of the people in society.

Capitalism in theory is amoral; it doesn't account for the societal best interests of the actual people who manufacture and purchase goods and services.
In that sense it does commoditize human beings into assets and losses, which is a terrible way to view anyone.

As the creator of the Wire once said in an interview, 'capitalism is a very poor social organizing principle.'

Without 'rules of engagement', capitalism at some point creates economies that destroy themselves.

I was taught to view the free market like a shark; sharks are predators. Predators are perfectly designed by evolution to be apex hunters. When a shark attacks and kills an 8 year old girl wading in five feet of water at the beach, the shark wasn't trying to be 'evil' or mean. The shark was being a shark.
That's why we need to have lifeguards monitoring the beach waters with binoculars to protect swimmers and allow sharks to be the animals they were made to be.

I do believe that capitalistic principles allow business professionals to behave in a sociopathic manner because maximizing profits doesn't care whether or not you fire an employee with 25 years seniority right before they qualify for full retirement benefits. Or downsize a worker who's supporting a spouse and five children at home.

If someone gets too obsessed with the pursuit of wealth, no cost is too great to pay which is how someone crosses over into moral bankruptcy.

Uninhibited capitalism IMO does nurture the most inhumane personality traits in people.

The worst part about Capitalism is it creates the lottery illusion where every dumb motherfucker thinks they are going to be the next Steve Jobs or Jay-Z so instead of seeing the inequalities in the system they all have the mindset they want to preserve the system the way it is because one day they'll be rich too. It explains the fast majority of right wing thinking. Everyone wants to be a damn CEO so they can give a fuck less about the plight of the worker even though they're workers themselves. But who cares because one day they'll buy that winning lotto ticket, record that hit song, or come up with the next Facebook. The media is in large to blame for this because they love showing that one in million winner instead of showing the problems of the whole million.

    real talk there.

hell, I asked a right winger about his statement about how regulation is killing the america because the job creators are being suffucated. I asked and responded thios way..." so when BP spilled the oil and destroyed habitat in mobile, the oil spilled in arkansas so you do understand now why barack dont want to hand out oil drilling licenses for fracking like candy now, and the factory building collapsing in bangkok would you still be in favor of loosing regulations? also you are aware there is no such thing as job creators. Entrepreneurs dont start businesses to hire people they do it to make money. if they can make a million dollars profit without hiring anybody they would do it. "

he responded "well we need regulations ...."
I interrupted and asked "where should it begin and end"

Has anyone here read "a wealth of nations" by adam smith? It is the cornerstone of where all our capitalist ideas come from...few ironies tho

Nothing about the free market in the Constitution...

Wealth Of Nations which we base our system on...was written by a adam smith who was a Scottish economist.

I agree with all of you....it can be used as a tool for exploiting others and well..pure evil. But so can many other systems...

personally....socialism and capitalism were both written/created by men (karl Max-Communist Manifesto/Adam Smith-Wealth of Nations) who thought the worlds resources were infinite...so think we need to re think both philosophies
