'Dog' racism on tape, show in limbo Published: Oct. 31, 2007 at 7:20 PM LOS ANGELES, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Production was halted on the U.S. cable show "Dog the Bounty Hunter" after The National Enquirer reported Duane Dog Chapman made racist slurs on tape. Chapman reportedly has apologized and expressed concern he would be "put in the same category as" shock jock Don Imus, who lost his syndicated radio show after on-air racist remarks. The Enquirer reported Wednesday it obtained tapes of two telephone conversations in which Chapman, who gained fame on the A&E reality show, unleashes a tirade of racist insults and repeatedly uses the N-word. A&E issued a statement announcing production on the show has been suspended, TMZ.com reported. "When the inquiry is concluded we will take appropriate action," the statement said. The reported racist comments were directed at Monique Shinnery, who is black. She is the girlfriend of Chapman's son, Tucker. Chapman's pastor, Tim Storey, told TMZ he spoke Wednesday with Chapman and the celebrity cried for 30 minutes, saying: "I'm shocked, I'm wrong I repent. Can you believe, Tim, that I'm going to be put in the same category as Imus." Storey, who is black, said Chapman is not a racist. "He's been to black churches with me to help inner-city kids," he said 'Dog' Chapman's racist rant leads to TV show's suspension The A&E television network has suspended production of the Hawaii-based reality show "Dog the Bounty Hunter" after its star Duane "Dog" Chapman was caught on an audio tape repeatedly using a racial slur. The tape was obtained by the National Enquirer and published on their Web site, www.nationalenquirer.com, today. Soon after, the celebrity news Web site TMZ.com reported that A&E network suspended production. On the tape, Chapman uses the "n-word" in reference to his son's black girlfriend. TMZ.com said A&E issued a statement saying the show has been suspended while it investigates the allegations. "When the inquiry is concluded we will take appropriate action," the statement said, according to TMZ. In a statement issued this afternoon, Chapman said: “My sincerest, heartfelt apologies go out to every person I have offended for my regrettable use of very inappropriate language. I am deeply disappointed in myself for speaking out of anger to my son and using such a hateful term in a private phone conversation. It was completely taken out of context. I was disappointed in his choice of a friend, not due to her race, but her character. However, I should have never used that term. I have the utmost respect and aloha for black people, who have already suffered so much due to racial discrimination and acts of hatred. I did not mean to add yet another slap in the face to an entire race of people who have brought so many gifts to the world. I am ashamed of myself and I pledge to do whatever I can to repair this damage I have caused. “In Hawai’i, we have something called ho’oponopono, where people come together to resolve crises and restore peace and balance. I am meeting with my spiritual advisor, Rev. Tim Storey, and hope to meet with other black leaders so they can see who I really am and teach me the right thing to do to make things right again. “I know that all of my fans are deeply disappointed in me as well, as I have tried to be a model for doing the right thing. I did not do the right thing this time, and hope you will forgive me. We learn from our mistakes, as my story of overcoming a life of crime has proven, and I will learn from this one for the rest of my life.” http://starbulletin.com/breaking/breaking.php?id=6362 http://www.tmz.com/2007/10/31/dog-chapmans-hate-filled-tirade/ Does this really surprise anyone, this is how alot of whites talk behind closed doors, and nowadays with the doors open? I wont be losing any sleep over this thats for sure, dudes whole family looks like trailor trash anyway. I'm sure Al Sharpton will catch wind of this story and we'll have to endure a few months of his mug all over Faux News and CNN babbling about the N word and wanting an apology from the bounty hunter. They'll probaby have a little sit down just like he did with Kramer and discuss race and the history of the N word etc etc.
You said it, Patterson. I don't know why people, especially blacks, act all surprised when a white person says something stupid. I certainly don't because i know they are things they say in the privacy of their homes or in all-white settings.
I think you two need to slow down a bit. How are you going to say "this is how a lot of whites talk behind closed doors"?????? Are you serious? Do you really think this way? That is quite a strong statement to make. I might say some. I have quite a large family and in all of my biological and step families, I have never hear the N---- word used, ever. As a matter of fact, I've heard, by far, more black people use that word referring to eachother than anyone else in my life. (which I don't agree with either) If my first post was still up, concerning this issue, you would see that I was utterly shocked to hear this. That is a show I've watched for some time now and used to like it. My kids even liked that show. It's too bad he had to ruin it. I'm not trying to stick up for Dog in any kind of way, what he did was stupid. I am sticking up for the people in my family and my friends. I'm sorry, I guess I am just naive, acting surprised and all. I don't see how that could be either. I've been in IR relationships for over 10 years now and live in the South. I am no stranger to racism. I'm not trying to be mean to you guys that just hit a sore spot b/c I'm not around a lot of racist white people, or at least they don't act that way to me or my family. Sorry, I don't agree.
Look, some white use the N-word when they're around all-whites. Key word, some. Some blacks use comparable derogatory language when they're in all-black settings. And that goes for all races. It's no mystery, nothing new. Using racist words isn't shit. Some may call it ignorance, call it what u will. It's when you act on those words or say those words to someone's face to get a reaction that those words really mean something. On a side note, I in no way promote racism. I guess I've just learned to deal with it.
Dog using the N word? So what. What did Kanye say: "The only producer that feel like "fuck rappers!" Only backpacker with a chip like hackers, Only Michael Richardson, only much blacker, So if he say nigger, then I'ma say ........" You can fill in the rest.
I have no idea who this dude is or what he does to be in the spotlight. All I know is that I am tired of these "heartfelt apoloies"... how heartfelt are they really?? I guess that depends on the size of the bank account in danger.
You said your not around alot of racism, but you also said you are no stranger to racism. Im a bit confused there, saying your no stranger to it means you have been around it. I would say whites we don't know all like that could be racist mofos. You can't really say some, because the most racism in america is actually upperclass white america and everybody knows there are alot of rich white racists in this country. But I would most definetly say some about middle and lower class america. Because those are the two classes where most interracial couples are.
EXACTLY That is what we need to really focus on, dog is an example of it though because along with the slur he wanted his son to break up with her, he wanted his son to take an action due to racist beliefs and it is things like that and MORE that we should really focus on when they take it to that action level. I couldn't have said better myself socal.
I have a question though, don't you guys think that simply saying something and allowing to get away with it will water things down and make the next step "to action" that much easier? So let's say we just don't get upset anymore about people using the N word and it becomes a part of day to day language expressing one's dislike for blacks, don't you think that may result in a more racist environment or do you guys think "Oh well they say and feel it anyway, might as well be out in the open" ?
What I mean by I'm not around a lot of racism is that I choose not to conversate or associate with those kind of people. They are not welcome at my house, nothing. I am no stranger to it b/c I've been plenty of places and had people staring or heard them making comments pertaining to us. There are some mexican kids that live at the end of my street ages 6, 8, & 10 they've called my kids n---ers on numerous occassions. I simply went down to their house, told their parents what they said (along with the black neighbors these mexican kids always play with. the dad was standing in the yard talking when I was telling the parents about the n--- word) I then explained to the kids that they are not welcome at my home anymore. Don't ever come in my yard again. I know it is not their fault but if their parents aren't going to teach them, someone needs to. The lady who ran the daycare that my kids went to just automatically thought we must be a low income family and when I asked her what made her think that she just looked at me with a stupid look on her face b/c she didn't want to say the truth. Some is a much better word to use.
No because what you do is call 'em a name right back, don't have to be a bad name or don't have to be a name period it could collection of intelligent words to ridicule and expose them as ignorant low forms of life for talking like that. Sometimes I would do that, but most of the time I'll call 'em a hunky, blue eyed devil, or even worse a nigger right back, something that would get to them as well...an eye for an eye, a tooth for an tooth. But some people don't believe in bad name calling, that is why I also suggest to ridicule them with an intelliegent, sophisticated statement of their rudeness. Like for an example I have heard someone told a racist talk about how "you will never amount to anything, 30 year old man living in the mother's basement with dreams that will never come true..." All in All you fight actions with actions, fight words with words.
Yes, I meant exactly what I said, a lot, some or whatever way you want to sum it up, use the N word behind closed doors. You'd have to be naive, in denial or just plain ol living under a rock not to believe that. If you need proof, just check out sites like racist site.org or vnnforum, those sites have over a 100,000 members who use it everyday. With that said, just imagine the people who aren't members of those sites who use it casually around each other, or those who use it in front of blacks etc, IMO that is A LOT of people. You also admitted that you aren't around a lot of racist white people, well you kinda shot yourself in the foot there. Hello!!! I'm not around a lot of racist black people either, but trust me, I've been around some before, and I know they exist and that there are a lot of them. I'm not trying to be mean to you either, I'm just trying to inform about the real world, and how a lot of whites talk when blacks aren't around.
How did I shoot myself in the foot there??? Did you read my next post??? Obviously not. Well, say what you want, I'm not going to argue with you about this, there's no point. Real world, yeah I definitely know what the real world is. If you feel you need to talk down on me to get your point across, I'm sorry you feel that way. I don't live under a rock and I do live in the real world. What are you doing looking at websites like those you listed anyway? Are you just trying to get yourself all mad? I don't expose myself to that shit b/c I choose not too. I know it exists. I don't agree that a lot of black people are racist either. Some? Yes, but a lot, no. I consider a lot to be at least 80%. I'm done with this.
I got you back JasieS, anybody who didn't see her follow up to when I asked her SHE CLEARED EVERYTHING UP OF WHAT SHE MEANT, JUST READ HER 2ND POST! SO PLEASE CHILL OUT AND READ HER ANSWER TO MY QUESTION!
The fact that he used racially derrogatory language pales in the face of his denying employment based on race. He specificly said he would hire his son back if he would dump his black girlfriend. Wonder how many other black people and their families were not given jobs because he didnt want them around to hear his family make asses of themselves? The producers of his TV program HAD to know this was a problem. You cant tell me that they have been filming his family for years and this didnt come out. They are as culpable IMHO. I think the EEOC should get involved in this.
I grew up in predominately white suburban neighborhoods in Texas. I can't tell you how many times in social situations I had whites (and Latinos for that matter) use that word and other epithets to refer to black people in a derisive in my presence when they got too comfortable with me. I have a pretty good idea about the kinds of things that were said when I wasn't around. Certainly, not all of the white people that I knew when I lived in Texas behaved this way, but a significant amount of them did. Considering my own experiences, I'd have to say that you do sound naive to me, and frankly, I think you're also overly sensitive. The post you were replying to did not say that ALL white people are racist, so there was no need for you to throw yourself up on a cross to defend your family. Maybe you don't deal with it personally, but racism is alive and well in this country.
