Keeping us Aussie's lookin good again.

Hey, I don't know if you ever replied, and I can't remember what topic I posted in. What's with you and the Aussies? Are you down here yourself, or do you just love us? :p

The last one with miss universe, she is actually from the same town as me! Newcastle- the same city anyway, I don't mean down the street or anything. Lol. My friends boyfriend actually 'dated' here (you know, holding hands and stuff) when they were like, 12. haha. Whatta way to give a girl a complex- my man's ex is MISS UNIVERSE!

But personally, gorgeous though she is I think she is by FAR nowhere near the best we have to offer down here, even of the beach babe variety. We have girls of all flavours, dark hair, light hair, dark skin or eyes, light skin or eyes, from all over the world. But the stereotype says we ain't all like that.

Sure there are! Of course! Bigger cities are where it's at, most likely though. All major cities have a 'significant' African, African descent population. I put it in inverted commas because though we are one of the most ethnically diverse nations in the world, we are not inter-racial in the same way the US is (as far as Af-background).

We have only had migration of any significance from Africa in the last 25 years I would say. I live nearby to sydney, here (for you, soulthinker)

A significant portion of our black population don't figure on the census, as they have come here to study and may or may not choose to stick around. A number of cities are also getting a great refugee intake, including my town in the last five years, from Burundi and Sudan.

I would say the majority of Aussie born Af-Australians are still quite young, under 30.

Ladeezman Cris: On the xenophpbia. Yes, it definately exists and the racism that sometimes occurs makes me very ashamed to be Australian. However, I have travelled extensively and I would not say that race relations are any uglier than in the States.

It occurs differently. It is much more covert, we do not really (though it has changed slightly since Bush and our lil Johnnie's campaigns across the globe) have that outward, organised hate. Ignorance can definately be directed at our black folk, more so in small towns. It is not framed in the legacy of slavery like you guys have, but is more related to idiots not being knowledgable or understanding why so many people choose to settle here (which is silly, when you consider that more than a quarter of our population is from somewhere else less than one generation ago!)

It would be unfair to say it doesn't exist, sadly idiots aren't exclusive to one nation, and it hasn't been helped by our currently pathetic government, but you will also find alot of very warm and welcoming people- like me!

Leksie, had you been to Rushcutter's Bay? There is a marker of the site built by Hugh (Large Deal) MacIntosh of the boxing ring where Jack Johnson became the first black heavyweight champ on Boxing Day,1908. MacIntosh also brought a black bicycle racer.

Thanks for the photo Leksie. I forgot, back in 1967 the black magazine Ebony published a two part story about Oz.
