Free education would be nice. Many Americans don't want to put the effort into advanced education or degrees and the ones that do end up bogged down in debt. However, if its not free, reduced would be great.

It is more difficult to develop support for that idea in the US (I'd imagine) because of the rabid association with free market=better quality/variety etc without exception but we know this is not always the case.

The UK (until recently) has had 'free' (or relatively cheaper) education of excellent quality.

Australia, you can at least pay through your taxes after you earn a certain amount, which is not as good as we used to have but makes it achievable.

All attempts to minimise financial elitism in education are good. Many of my cohort who are now successful lawyers, journalists and whatever else would not have been able to afford that had they been in the US.

 

I made the argument that you declare education a national security issue. You can't allow democracy to run without an educated class that would make informed choices on the right policies that fit within a 4 year model. Serious structural issues in the American economy cannot be fixed within a 4 year time frame, yet the electorate demand immediate gratification that is a huge problem.

Most humans favour immediate gratification, talkless of poor folks. It takes a bit of enlightened choice to go the path of delayed gratification in order to get a good education. It explains why cultural capital is accumulated over generations, just like savings and investments. Most descendants of well to do families don't have to do back breaking work to survive and have full time to pursue academic work. But the funny thing those said descendants, most, lose the fire, and they have nothing to prove. It explains why most times urban culture is created in the ghettos of the world.

Yes, like Dreaming_Blue said it might make sense to reduce the cost, and you can offer incentives to reduce debts through volunteer programs for top notch students to end up in classrooms and inner cities to help raise the standards.

It all depends on how you work with incentives to favour high enrollment. The percentage of GDP that America spends on defense budget if directed to education can help ease the burden of many families. It explains why I said declare a national security issue and you will get a buy-in to push policies through the congress, or many folks to buy into it.

The wars of coming years would be fought on smarts, technological know how. In the past, America developed because it gained the benefit of intellectuals that were produced and nurtured in other countries, and it still does. America just gave the environment and resources to blossom. Einstein, although many years ago is a case in point. The other German chap (in recent times) with an accent that handled foreign policy is another example.

The whole notion that America's educational system attracts talents from abroad in my own reckoning is fictitious.Most people that end up in America, I mean students do this with the hope of staying back, and having a shot at the so called American dream. That is also a motivating factor.

I know that you can address the issue straight-jacket, there has to be a combination of policies that reflects necessity, workability and competitiveness. And like all human endeavours, when there is a will there is always a way. But first, America must define its priorities in these modern times, and recreate its a new set of values to address the issues of this age.

More people means higher costs and with little revenue means less quality teachers to satisfy the growing number of student needs.
I think cost reduction is the better way to go.

I know some of you might hate to hear this but under the current economic model of capitalism we need there to be an under employed and under educated class of people in this world. We need there to be people economically trapped in order to try and sustain our selfish way of life. Its not a coincidence that only few do well while the majority live a paycheck away from absolute poverty.

 

if football and basketball well sports for that matter was cut out of society the economy and society as a whole would not crumble. as a matter of fact during the industrial revolution there was no organized sports league. why give govt money to build the arenas when it could be given to the schools ?

why should we subsidize a sports team that is suppose to be a private entity that is suppose to be part of capitalism in which the conservative preach on ? WHY ?

 

Finland has the best education system. It is also "free". so it does not destroy quality. That's just b.s.

 

Capitalism does not work for humanity. It is only there until we come up with something better. We don't need there to be an uneducated class. We simply need a better system.

 

Finland doesn't have a tenth of the population the US does nor does it have the unimanigable influx of illegals that we have so the quality will be absolute garbage my friend..

 

And who do you think needs to come up with that system? The elite educated few who the system serves best or the masses who are getting fucked. The priviledged will never voluntarily give up their priviledge it has to be taken from them.

 

That doesn't mean we can't learn from their system. There is a lot of repeative stuff in our system. Think back to your high school days. Did you take algebra in high school? what about college?

 

Knowledge is not like another consumer product- it's breadth is endlessly expansive and enduring. It is not necessary to keep your fellow citizens downtrodden as sacrificial lambs.

In order to maintain the lifestyle we've come to expect yes we do. You think you'd be able to buy a pack of tshirt for 15 bucks if there wasn't a downtrodden uneducated under class forced to work for pennies a day or even eat at decent restaurants for meals at 25 bucks if they didn't have illegals working for less than minimum wage. I'm assuming you're educated because you come across that way but the reason most of the bs that happens in the market place is because people have education replaced with religion. They are taught to suffer now and wait for rewards in "heaven". Most people aren't smart enough to know they're getting fucked they just accept their shitty way of life. Educating the masses will mean a serious change in our economic policies which I welcome but millions will have to die first in either mass war disease or natural disaster. People are fucking lazy. Just fact.

My point is that all of that could have been taken in high school. Instead we make students take it twice and pay for it.

The point was to illustrate that our education system makes you take the class twice. You take those classes in high school and then college. You need to be able to save money and take the classes once and only in high school and not twice.
You have students taking these classes over that got A's and B's in them such as english compsition or chemistry in high school. They teach it again in college. Why? The person got an A in it already. Why is the education system wasting money like this?
