Are any of you hearing that employers in some businesses are letting employees go or scaling back on hours and benefits from their jobs because of the re-election of President Obama? I've heard down here in Virginia before the election some employers warned employees in their companies that they will have to let some go because of President Obama's health care and tax policy. If this is widespread I wonder who are the people who will be given the pink slip.

That's illegal. I smell some big-time litigation against those right-wing employer creeps.

If that happened to me...I'd tell my employer this: See ya in court ;)

Depending on the industry! Technolgy has little effect on service based industies. Make no mistake, healthcare coverage costs employers an average of 33% above a persons annual salary. However rate increases aren't typically obsorbed but passed on to the employee with a woefull apology. Tax increases, rising costs materials or services do hit the bottom line, but if a company isn't poised to obsorb those costs, they weren't in a good spot to begin with. Mass layoffs are one thing, but when companies cut a handful of people it's usually done to "trim the fat" ie poor performers or "high risk" employees. (Workers comp claimers, FMLA users, poor attitude ppl) what you'll never see are executive perks eliminated!

Btw, always be leery of a severance agreement that takes away your right to sue if you accept it!

I once had to present to 200+ employees the addresses of state representatives, provide them with paper, envelopes, stamps and a rough outline of how to ask them to vote down a specific tax that could significantly effect our employer and potentially cost jobs and effect the families of their consituants. I agreed with the tax so i didn't write a letter. You've got me thinking that this scenario (scare tactic) is a thinly veiled threat of the the same thing you're descibing. Hmmmm...you've got an employment law enthusiast really thinking! :) LOVE IT!

Papa Johns..one of the loudest proponents of letting his workers go or reducing hours and wages to cover the .14 cent cost..
    Isn't exactly small.

I'm sure most "small" business owners don't have 22 car garages or moats and personal golf courses.

They probably live in something sane..like 4,000 square feet as opposed to 44,000 square feet.

    It's all laughable.

David Siegel in particular. He threatened to let all his employees go and move out of the country if Obama was elected. He hadn't made enough money in the last for years or so he says. He is building the LARGEST HOME EVER in the US. That isn't making enough money???!!! He owns Westfate Resorts. Well Obama was elected and what...........he kept his employees and gave them all raises. What a bunch of blowhard .........

    His email to employees:

What he did say in an e-mail he sent in early October to all 7,000 employees of the privately held company is: "The economy doesn't currently pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is another 4 years of the same Presidential administration.
"If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, as our current President plans, I will have no choice but to reduce the size of this company," he wrote at that time. "Rather than grow this company I will be forced to cut back. This means fewer jobs, less benefits and certainly less opportunity for everyone."
