Don't make any assumptions like that. You know that's a far cry from the truth. I tend to appreciate psychology, sociology and finance along with other social sciences. With psychology and sociology, they actually help give a better understanding of the attitudes and human behavior as a whole. That's something I can rely on.

Other social sciences, I can safely say the same.

If I didn't appreciate the social sciences, I wouldn't be as liberal as I am today.

Kind of one in the same and the others are worthless in my life at the present. I honestly think we need to abolish them as majors in colleges and have these kids focus on production based endeavors. Take a look at who leads the world in sociology majors and who does in engineers then compare their economies right now.

I would have to disagree with that. In any accredited institution, having people who specializes in these fields do contribute tremendously to the continued progress of the country and the world as a whole. Dismissing social sciences and the arts as worthless comes off as disingenuous. Yes, the fields of math, science, and engineering are very important, but you do need experts in other fields as well...especially when dealing with people who are aspiring to educate the future.

I strongly disagree but like I said as far as I've seen I don't really see the need for experts in psychology, sociology or most social sciences. I'm sure someone can remind me of one or two that show promise but for the most part I see all these kids going to school for these majors that produce NOTHING and they can't find jobs. It seems better suited for a hobby not a job. I love history but I don't see what a degree program would have gotten me. It was in my best interest to study math, economics, and accounting and then to read history books for fun.

The point that you are missing is that their are more than one way to solve problems. I am sure both of these economist know this but why would they burn their bridges to do so if they are playing the political game. There is more than one way to solve problems in engineering as well. So would you call engineering a philosophy??

So do you think Finance and psychology and both worthless??

It may not be for you, and you may have a difficult understanding their importance, but it doesn't diminish their significance in the world. We're not machines nor we're in a uniformed, centralized world.

Remember, had it not been for those who are in the fields of psychology, sociology, and other social sciences, we wouldn't have certain explanations regarding race being a social construct (Anthropologists also confirms this), homosexuality and other areas would still be considered taboo or "a mental illness", we would still have certain prejudices and would act out in very ignorant manners for a developed country.

You may not be able to see it, but the fact is...they all provide a crucial role in the development of our continued growing factions. They help bridge things together because we, as humans, have the tendency to respond in fear of what we cannot comprehend.

Engineering is practical since it is put to the test and such methods can be applied and can either fail or be successful. False equivalency.

To me most of their findings are a fricking no brainer and it doesn't seem persuade anyone. Case in point people who thought race wasn't a social construct weren't swayed by any findings, people who knew the subject of race was bs already knew this they didn't need someone to tell them that.
Same with homosexuality. Most people who are homophobic aren't going to be swayed by a study that says its biological not a choice. Most progressives know this already. See my point?

Finance no, psych kind of. Its not completely worthless but I think the insanely high number of people with degrees in the field are. How many people do we need to talk to people with their problems. Notice the difference between psychiatrists and psychologists before you respond brother.

They all have this in common, why else are they called sciences. Why else do they all rely on the same math?

Not quite. You're forgetting that there are people who aren't swayed by factual findings regarding such matters like the theory of evolution and other hard sciences. That's just based largely on ignorance. Should we disregard the applied sciences as well?

People who held a more open-minded view on it didn't always have the information or concrete understanding of varied social sciences. Another example would be people who use to think that crazy individuals were possessed by demons. But logic and of course, the study called psychology actually debunked much of the myth and supernatural ideas and in return, gave us more rational understandings of how the mind works and functions.

You are looking at the subjects as career fields instead of looking at the knowlege that you can apply in your life regardless of your profession. Ex. psychology is useful in marketing and finance. lol

No. Engineering isn't synonymous with science.

Intensive use of maths and physics to help with designs and other experiments or contraptions.

“Scientists dream about doing great things. Engineers do them.”

True, and there is a difference between a economist and a financial analyst, you changed up the debate. I still would not parade that quote the way you did, that statement sort of discounted the value of scientists.

It's not really discrediting the scientists in any way or form. Though, jokingly, there is a "war" between the fields, although we're better off working in synchronicity. What it really means is that engineers actually use the applied sciences to put together something. As for other fields, like Chemists, as implied in the video shown, you're someone who would rather do theories and solve them. But they can never really be tested in real world applications.

That is not the purpose of a theory, the purpose of a thoery is to explain facts. Just because something is not absolute does not mean it is not relevant. You are splitting hairs.

  17. Beasty

You can however test a hypotheses and develop a theory from that.

  18. Morning Star

I never said it wasn't relevant. The relevancy differs between the two fields. One is applied and the other is theoretical. And yes, you are right, theory (scientific sense) is to draw conclusions, but even a theory has to undergo certain methods for it to proven factual (gravity, evolution, heliocentric theory, germ theory). But when dealing with theoretical numeric mathematics, that's a different case altogether.

Ok so I guess you are more interested in the use of principles than theories?

I thought this was about health insurance.
Also, can we stop pretending like an engineer can't do the same thing as a sceintist and vice versa. If you have the knowledge, you can do it all.
