    This happened in the 1600's.

"In time, the English thought of a better way to use these women to increase their market share: The settlers began to breed Irish women and girls (many as young as 12) with African men to produce slaves with a distinct complexion. These new “mulatto” slaves brought a higher price than Irish livestock and, likewise, enabled the settlers to save money rather than purchase new African slaves."

"This practice of interbreeding Irish females with African men went on for several decades and was so widespread that, in 1681, legislation was passed “forbidding the practice of mating Irish slave women to African slave men for the purpose of producing slaves for sale.” In short, it was stopped only because it interfered with the profits of a large slave transport company."

That's not why it was stopped, if it was ever really widespread which I doubt.

This was the same time when America was developing the idea of race, and even though the Irish were chattel slaves, they were still White people.

Encouraging White Irish women to breed with Black African slaves was offensive to the dominant European power structure in the colonies.

BTW, this portrait is NOT representative of Irish indentured servitude in the colonies.

This is a painting of a slave auction in Rome.
Notice the dress of the men in the crowd.

Bruh you have a tendency to post some really questionable shit.
As in, you're a White guy trolling.

This is a link from the same pic when you look up the page info on that portrait.

    I love exposing agendas.;-)

People really need to understand how appearance and skin color affect a person's ability to assimilate into the dominant American culture.

If Africans looked like your average Swede, this country would never have fought the Civil War.

Wow, that's some next level stupid right there.

Whoever wrote this, has the biggest racial blind spot I've ever seen.

In France, prostitutes were rounded up and sent to the new colonioes. Anmd when there they were often bred with native people.

No, they aren't trolling. There are a lot of people out there making that claim that the Irish were treated worse than Africans in America. Just like that Duke professor claimed that Asians (specifically Japanese) were treated just as awful as black people in American history but managed to overcome the difficulties unlike black folk. Willful ignorance.

As for the Irish women thing...at first black females were not brought to the "new world" as slaves, just black men. The one acceptable mate for such men were Irish women who were indentured servants. You don't see any movies or films about such pairing like you do such movies in which "good" white male slave owners enter into a relationship with a black slave woman.

JS,in Maryland and elsewhere those slave masters took the children of those unions and sold them into slavery.

Which children? The ones between Irish women and blacks or the ones between the white slave owners and their black mistresses or rape victims?

The article is correct that at the time indentured/enslaved Africans fetched a higher price and were deemed more valuable. However the main thesis of the article is absurd. Also I think this nonsense of Irish women being forced to breed with Africans is 100% horse shit or an isolated incident. Although more than likely fictitious nonsense from someone with a bizarre idea for an interracial porn plot.

However most slaves in the early colonial period even the Africans were indentured temporary slaves. Indentured servants often where not restricted from marrying or procreating. So I imagine it was more likely that there where interracial parings amongst the indentured service by choice. In fact some of the free blacks in the states only had that status because of their white mother.

While mixed race slaves did fetch a higher price at the time. It was usually the planters selling their own children or the child of an overseer.
