Is it wrong?

I would like your opinion on something.

I've read this article which mentioned how it is wrong for college kids to throw "Ghetto fabulous" parties dressing up with gold teeth and afro wigs and it made me think... is it really wrong? Is it wrong for everyone or only wrong if whites do it? At the same token would it then be wrong if kids throw "redneck" parties? Is it the same or is it not? Is it insensitive or simply an exaggeration of a lifestyle undisputedly out there.

I am still mulling over this but honestly feel calling it wrong is being a bit too politically correct.

Not looking to antagonize just want some feedback.

 

Well Chigirl those parties perpetuate stereotypes and I bet most of those fraturnities have not been to the hood. They mostly listen to the music. Also I doubt if a real homeboy comes to that party would be invited. It is like if they have a German party and have nazi uniforms along with the lederhosen n dirndls.

 

I tend to agree. Pretty white college boys pretending to be something they'd never have the guts for in real life. But that being said, I don't think it's wrong, just questionable. I mean, why pretend to be anything, except on Halloween. :lol: Is it supposed to impress the ladies? Damn wannabes. :lol:

 

IT is in much the same vien as the pimps and Hos ball in LAs vegas started by a couple of frat boys.

On the one hand they get to play and for limited to be this big bad ideal of what they believe a pimp while at the same time reinforcing in their mind the ideas of what that means, who these people are and how these people act.

It is fantasy skewed with bigotry.

participation does not neccesarily mean you are a bigot or prejudiced. As you go into those things with the idea that this caricature rather realistic.

The problem with the college ghetto fab parties is we are dealing with young often times shelter middle upper middle class people who buy into and at times go to far with these caricatures. They go into mocking because of the psychological distress of at once wanting to fulfill the fantasy of being the other and disgust at this other because of the community they were raised in social upbringing.

So they mock and coon and slur any class of blacks and lower class hispanics.

I can see the right and wrong of the thing while at the same time just be totally confused about what to do about it.

Maybe those parties will end once blacks start having suburban angsted parties or biff and buffy affairs as a counter point.

 

Put simply, it is wrong. I do not even want to begin to debate its wrongs because believe me, we could be hear for a very long time. You know it's wrong, which is why you're having repeated doubts. If you believed it were right and had good reason to, you would not be thinking about it again. But because you know deep down, it is not on, you're trying very hard to look at both sides of the coin, albeit bluntly, but the negatives clearly overcome the positives. It is morally wrong and should never be done. I am not saying "Redneck Parties" should be thrown instead (not that it would even be half as hurtful) but the whole racial mockery should be ended.

That would be more humorous than hateful. Let me say one thing. The fact that blacks have not made whites disgracefully entertain them can never ever make such an act funny or even mocking. Whites sure have. Now there are only a certain number of racial slurs blacks can use against whites namely "Cracker, honky, paleface, whitey". Add about 2 more and that is pretty much it. But whites have at least 20 hateful words, used to create deep resentment and inferiority, that they can apply to us. That is the simple reason why saying "cracker" 20 times can never be more damaging than saying "nigger" just once. Because the history behind both words are not even as close to each other in terms of its awful repertoire.

 

I think the truth is in that these parties are about belittling people based on race.
That fact that:
1.Not all black people come from the ghetto.
2.Not all people who live in the ghetto act like “that”.
3.They feel the need to put down others to have “fun”.
I could list more but I think most people get the point.

If we had paraplegic parties where people came in wheelchairs and talked about how people always took our parking spaces... I think that would be fun.
We could roll around and fall out of our wheelchairs and just crawl around on the floor!!!
How cool would we be doing something like that?

I was just wondering where SardonicGenie was and why he hadn't been in here to call Chigirl a big fat racist for ASKING people to THINK about something! I guess flaminghetero has taken his place!

I just love it when we white girls get fucking flammed for ASKING a question and we get accused of being racist just because there are things that we want to better understand! One would think that kind of thing wouldn't happen on a site dedicated to people who are pro-IR and who know just what kind of struggles we face IRL!! It would be nice if this place were free of that kind of bullshit and if we could have open and mature discussions about things without resorting to personal attacks!

Having said that, I cant front. To ME its offensive. I have heard about these kind of parties. Personally I place more of the blame on these ignorant rappers, athletes, entertainers, etc. that make up and enlarge this stereotype through their music, videos and so on.

Now having said THAT, I want to reiterate that I feel where Chigirl was coming from with this question. Like I said I cant be down with that type of stuff but that dosent mean that the people doing it are bad, maybe ignorant and a little misguided (not to mention drunk, etc.)....

Thanks for your response. You're right, I shouldn't lump everyone in with a few bad apples. And, a big thanks to you and to the other guys in here who answered the question calmly without feeling the need to call the original poster a big racist.

It just gets so difficult around here sometimes. I had always seen this place as the ideal spot to come and get information and to discuss race-related topics in a mature way. At least that's how I perceived this forum when I joined and it always disappoints me when I see that may not really be possible... :?

Anyone with some brains realized what my post was about and that it was an inquiry without an agenda. Ok Chi, these types of so called parties are racist and are done to poke fun of a way of life some Blacks. In fact in you were to drop off most of these kids in the hood, 98% of them would piss on themselve out of fear of being punked.

Now as for me, I would never attend a function that would make fun of Whites, Blacks, Asians or anyone else. The shyt is uncalled for and just one more reason for some people to refuse to change or grow up.

I would have to say that imitation is the best form of flattery. In America we have the 1st Amendment. Freedom of speech and expression. Don't let stuff like that bother you. Life is too short. If you are at the party and it offends you, you should leave. If it is done out of flattery, you will feel the vibe and know the difference. You have Ignorant White and Black people alike. It's not a color thing, it's an idiot thing. Them come in all shape sizes and colors.
