Is your attraction based on TV?

Question for white women & black men. Is the type of person your attracted to based on what you see mostly on TV or people your actually come in to contact with everyday? I know the media can shape attraction but its a interesting question. For me its what I've always been around. I grew up in NY and my school was 99.9% white, so that's what I was always around. White women are more open to difference which I think is really cool..but I guess to each his/her own :smt045

I actually disagree with this. I believe the black community is one of the most tolerant with regards to differences than most communities in the United states.

my attractions have nothing to do with TV...I find white women attractive...cuz I find them attractive.

...but my attraction to a woman has little to do with her race. Find me a lil waisted woman with nice legs, and a beautiful smile........I'm game.

I absolutely think that TV and the media in general helps to shape what people find attractive.

TV influences the rest of the world, and suddenly it's entrenched into societal norms.

Not to say that where we come from doesn't influence it as well, but we are so inundated with pictures of what's considered attractive, it's difficult not to absorb some of that.

In your case, Whispered, I'd probably say you're also influenced by the media- I mean, there's a TON of white women in the media. I'm sure that helped shape what you viewed as sexy, especially since you could see examples all around you.

It is interesting, though. I don't think what's around me had much of an impact though (although it had some, I'm sure), but my family is Italian, and also somewhat racist, so I never would've dated BM if I relied solely on that. I also didn't have many BM in my classes at school (and there were many in school, just none that I happened to interact with regularly) except one kid who had a locker right next to mine. He was gorgeous. lol If anyone influenced me, it was him. ;)

For most people, TV's influence tends to have done its job early in childhood.

For me... I do know that im attracted to some attributes in women that arent exactly mainstream so at least some of my taste is genuinely mine.

Ive noticed that theres a new generation of young adults that seem to get outraged when they see a woman on TV/print/media that dares to feel confident and attractive but isnt part of modern society's collective idea of perfect. A lot of vitriol based exaggeration of women's perceived faults.

Jennifer Love Hewitt, Amber Rose, Mischa Barton, etc...

This is very much true. That guy needs to move out of NY. He'll see differently.

Who I'm attracted to has nothing to do with the TV. I do believe it does influence some people though. I've met BM that expected WW to be like the girls on silly shows like '90210' & 'Gossip Girl' which doesn't make sense. Of course a grown man watching shows made for teenage girls doesn't make sense to me either.

I agree with a lot of this as well. I remember being attracted to white women back when I was six years old, due to what I saw on TV.

Interesting examples.. what is it about them that doesn't conform to society's idea of perfect?

This I have to see because they conform perfectly.

Their weight is constantly the focus and or headline of stories they're featured in. All despite the fact that they're women of average weight at most.

Id make an effort to post links but you'd have to do nothing more than google them.

The scrutiny is there, despite how irrational it is.

Keeping things real, my attraction is based on literature. My first real ideas of white women came from books written by french writers. My idea of the perfect specimen will always lean toward the french influence.

With TV having as much influence on culture and fashion as it does, whether directly or indirectly the answer will be yes for most of us.

    To a large extent, yes.

This is going to sound crazy but when I watch a Black movie/show, I actually find myself somewhat more attracted to BW, and I very rarely watch Black shows or movies anymore. When most of my co-workers were Indian, Southeast Asian etc. I was more attracted to Indian, Asian etc. women (although my attraction to non-Black women of color is equal to or almost equal to my attraction to Whites).

When I was a kid, I vaguely remember liking women with red hair because of Cheryl Blossom (from Archie comics).

My attraction isn't really based off of TV at all. I can understand how TV could be a big influence but ever since I can remember I was just more attracted to white women. The first girl I ever liked was white, and from then on pretty much every girl I have had feelings for have been white. I will say that sometimes the attitude of black women is a huge factor for some of the turn off, but I just always have felt white women are the most gorgeous women out there.

My attraction to white women is based on my personal preference and my inner nature... I know what I like...

Television and American media in general, in my opinion, has only recently begun showcasing interracial couples in a "matter of fact" manner, and therefore, cannot take credit for influencing my choice. I knew long ago what I liked and what I wanted in a woman. Beyond television, there were even greater influences, like families and peers, and even those influences couldn't dissuade me from my nature. But media is catching on and has begun promoting "beautiful people" in more of their shows and ads.

Conservative media and conservative communities still tend to gloss over the reality happening around them. Something you'd see on television in one region of the US, may be re-shot with a different cast of characters in another region so as not to offend the local buying/viewing/supporting public. Old school can only be brought to the alter during a crises, but I think it still becomes a matter of choice for the new school individuals involved.

One can decide to choose a partner of a different race, culture, etc; but finding a fit takes more than the suggestions of a television show, or a commercial.

I have friends who are pro or con in their beliefs one way or the other for their personal choices regarding White/Black women and every other combination one can bring to the table, but my life is my own and I am no more influenced by television on the choice of my mate than I am in my choice of clothes. In other words, just because they say it's cool, doesn't make it cool for me...
