Prostitution is one of the oldest professions alive. With the economy [the debt has been shrinking too] still recovering at a turtle’s pace and confidence is still fluctuating between high and low, why not expand on the prospects on generating revenue for the country? We speak a lot on legalizing marijuana and the discussions eventually leads to decriminalization and taxation to where states can profit heavily from it. So, why not extend this consideration to something like prostitution?

The key thing we have to consider is regulation since there will be people who will take drastic measures to avoid paying any taxes towards this business. As it stands, Nevada has the only legal brothel in the country and the way its modeled, it could definitely work in other places.

So I would ask all of you the following:

What are your thoughts on legalizing prostitution? Yay or nay? Explain your position either way.

For those who wish to go into more detail:
    • What sort of regulations need to be implemented for it to work?
    • How much tax would you say, is considered reasonable?

I’m really hoping for a good discussion here, and I’d like your input on the matter.

At times I think the shit should be legalized. I don't see why two people willing to make a transaction between themselves is an issue. However, it gets deeper when human trafficking plays a part in prostitution and you don't know who is doing it because they want to or have to. You really gotta pay attention to the signs to tell if they are, but some mufuckas may be too damn focused on the pussy to notice or give a fuck. Sad.

That is very true. Hence why I've mentioned regulation of some sorts in case people are looking for some grounds of consideration for legalization.

In Sweden they legalized selling sex and instead illegalized buying sex.

I don't believe the government should be telling people what they can or cannot do with their body.

    Interesting/compelling argument against legalization here

Legalized prostitution in Amsterdam “has never worked” says a survivor

    Author: Julie Bindel
    Date: 2012

Despite claims that legalization helps women in prostitution, in Amsterdam it has led to increases in organized crime and trafficking and has created an environment in which pimps operate with impunity under the title of “manager” or “facilitator.” Far from empowering or protecting the prostituted women, where prostitution is legalized, the women are forced to pay rent and fees to a pimp to protect them from being beaten up such that they “can barely make a living.” Finally after 10 years of evidence that criminal gangs are in control of the Red Light District, local government officials are trying to find new measures to shut down the window brothels and sex shops and to attract new development to the area.

    Great link, Loki.

You have both changed my stance on this. Too much of a slippery slope, I see. I was all for free choice and favor select instances where it works exceptionally well, aka, Nevada's way of handling it, but clearly for those without rules or scruples, what you both outlined too easily becomes the norm.

I don't know what the big deal is. Prostitution is legal in the state I live in and there are brothels and hookers all over the shop, you just need to know where to look.

My favourite brothel near me is the daily planet, who have a competition on for a free night with your favourite girl http://dailyplanet.com.au/website/free-visit/

Your favorite? Are you a customer? Did you apply to win? :p

In all seriousness, it may not be a big deal in Melb, but the population comparison is we have 300 million more people in the US, so monitoring it is much more difficult.. combine with our porous borders where a lot of young women are smuggled here for it or forced into it to pay back traffic fees, etc.

In this country every single day, almost 2,500 people are reported missing ... namely young adults.
Abuse of them to partake in prostitution is highly likely.

I take great relish in everyone contributing to the discussion, and greater accolades to the likes of Loki who tend to come out with opinion pieces or factual statements to further drive the discussion along.

I'll give my input on the matter myself, but only when I'm fully situated.

So, in the meantime, do keep posting! :smt025

:p not a customer, but an old housemate of mine was the receptionist there and because of that I had a limitless supply if condoms in all colours, tastes and sizes.

I know that the population sizes differ greatly and we also have the same issues of young girls being forced into prostitution. My view is that it's better to have it legalised so those men who need the service for whatever reason can actually get their itch scratched in an establishment that is safe, clean and free of the fear of being caught doing something illegal.

I want it heavily regulated so pimps and crimminals don't take the profits of the women. A,it is still legalized in the Netherlands.

Thanks to GFunk and Loki for their very compelling reasons for not legalizing it.

It just struck me whilst reading the posts in this thread: if prostitution becomes legal, why would pimps still be needed? Couldn't a woman just "work out of her home" (how's THAT for a work-from-home solution? LOL) without the need of a "manager" or "facilitator"?

I'm all for keeping it illegal, BTW, with my opinion on the matter strengthened with GFunk's and Loki's posts.

GFUNKs argument is that in legalizing prostitution you are introducing the possibility of human trafficking. Generally, I'd respond by asking "How does keeping prostitution illegal help with human trafficking" but, I realize that comes of as snide. Human trafficking already exists and keeping prostitution illegal is not the fix, if anything it just turns a blind eye to it. Legalizing it will likely not make it go away, but it will certainly lessen it. Your beloved government will be keen to regulating it and those who choose to engage in it actually have a legal 'safer' option than hitting the streets and being taken to a seedy hotel in a Philadelphia slum with some stranger.

LOKI's argument is that it creates an environment that invites organized crime based on Amsterdams experience with legalization? I'd counter it by again asking how does keeping it illegal deter organized crime? When the exact definition of the word crime is "illegal activity", how does declaring an activity illegal deter organized illegal activity? It makes no sense. The US government will not make something like this legal and then walk away from it. There will be mandated drug tests, regular enforcement of policies, etc.,. I'm not saying the US process will be perfect, because it won't. I am saying we should not expect that the US execution will be identical to Amsterdam.

Saying that the government should be able to tell a consenting adult that she cannot make the decision to sell her body to another consenting adult is as ridiculous as saying that the government should be able to tell a man that he cannot marry a man because they both have penises. To use conjecture as your basis for argument is an irresponsible and deflective argument technique.... or 'grasping at straws'.

Oh, and there is a difference between legalizing prostitution and legalizing pimping. While the two in an illegal and poorly or entirely unregulated system generally go hand-in-hand. The two are by no means mutually exclusive, and having a proper legalized and controlled system in place allows the victim-less one to be legalized while the other remains illegal and enforced under law.

I wonder how many men stay faithful because they fear getting caught with a hooker? Not just because of the infidelity factor but the illegality of it.
