Yeah, good ol' Fort Lauderdale. Luckily, much of the community is standing with him. I think he was in DC last week talking to members of Congress about this. His story has picked up a lot of traction.

How can you not stand with him? How is offering food to another human, illegal? Americans are fundamentally known to help those who need help. I am so glad he's recieved national attention, as well as Congressional..

The City's argument is that his ad hoc charity was unhygienic and disorderly and it encouraged the homeless to ignore existing social service providers, but it's widely said to be more about the inconvenience large numbers of homeless people create for the City's marketing and tourism efforts.

God forbid the homeless interfere with marketing and tourism

I see both sides, because unrestrained, the homeless can create mini villages in downtown highly visible, highly trafficked recreational areas, so to that degree I can understand the city'sposition, particularly because the city generates lots of taxable revenue from tourists ..which in turn, provide for social services and what not, so I see that side. On the other hand it (and his humble Charity) does highlight the homelessness that exists not just in that city, but every city.

I actually mentioned this upcoming Memorial Day recognizing the homeless dead to an acquaintance today, and they told me a story of a Harvard professor who developed cancer, used up all his savings for his treatment, lost his home and became homeless. He ended up dying in a park from hypothermia.
It received national attention, and highlighted that there are many of whom are not alcoholic or drug addicted or mentally ill, out here living on the streets.

I hear what the City is saying, but come on, providing lunch shouldn't lead to a camp being set up (I'm saying this advisedly, as I've never set up a camp or lived in one). It seems like a temporary kindness to help people through the day. I don't want to see anyone hungry. I won't get any guy some spare change, but I will buy someone a burger or something.

Ur hearts in the right place and if you TRULY want to help people, donate canned goods or dollars to a shelter or soup kitchen....someplace that's regulated and off the streets

Too many shitheads prey on the homeless and they shouldn't be exposed to potential food poisoning

You may not be lacing food with warfarin but I'm sure others have

We teach our kids not to eat behind strangers yet we're willing to make an exception for the homeless

    Be real

Yeah, but I think it's a natural instinct to help someone within reason. And when someone's in desperate straits, the last thing they need to hear sometimes is "go here and they'll help you". Sadly a lot of their distress is due to undiagnosed mental illness and a lot of shelters are low on supplies and high on regulations, which many can't deal with (back to the mental health issue again). In an ideal world, every facility would have adequate beds, food and resources.

And he bought a loosie which got another guy choked by coppers

Jk....seriously tho people, donate when you can to legit organizations that benefit the homeless..or at least just have more awareness when it comes to the topic

Know when shelters are being closed or how many soup kitchens you have in your community

Just being aware and being an advocate helps tons

Seriously there were a few times in my life where I thought I'd end up homeless and had to actually plan for shit

Not everyone has the safety net of family or parents to fall back on

Pray for the best but prepare for the worse

In other news, I had a coworker who ended up homeless after losing his home

    Shit happens

You're preaching to the choir. I left my family barely out of 20. Hubby and I counted our pennies. Divorce put me in survival mode. No privilege here.

l forgot to add, Merry Christmas.
