More Americans say they have no religion

The report from The Program on Public Values at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., surveyed 54,461 adults in English or Spanish from February through November of last year. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 0.5 percentage points. The findings are part of a series of studies on American religion by the program that will later look more closely at reasons behind the trends.
The current survey, being released Monday, found traditional organized religion playing less of a role in many lives. Thirty percent of married couples did not have a religious wedding ceremony and 27 percent of respondents said they did not want a religious funeral.

I read that article this morning. I am overjoyed that we are undergoing this change, and I hope the trend continues. Religion is used too often in our country to justify bigotry and manipulate the feeble-minded.

i just caught this on world news tonight with charles gibson...it really doesn't surprise me that americans are moving away from organized religion...many said that even though they are not affiliated with any particular church or religous group they still consider themselves to be spiritual in belief...

 

That's what I say.

 

I have a family member who is illiterate and suffers from a psycho-schizo disorder. During the 2000 election, she called me and told me I shouldn't vote for Al Gore because a man on a religious program said that all people who vote for him will go to hell. The same goes for electing any leader who supports abortion or gay marriage. Mind you, this is a woman who can vote.

In this particular instance, it was a case of religion being used to manipulate the feeble (weak) minded. There was no prejudicial intent or intolerance behind it.
