Is it me or music videos used to be just plain better in the 90's? Sometimes I watch the Soul channel and see some older videos, man they were just so beautifully made! SWV's videos were so nice, for example. And I saw one with young Usher, I think the song is "Crazy" (well I'm not sure), it's black and white with this really pretty girl with curls... and the contrast of shades emphasizes emotions on the faces. There were some work of art videos back then. And I just watched the new Jessica Simpson video... Who said hell to the no? Has anyone seen a real quality music video lately?
I would have to say no, I have not seen quality videos in a long time, so I don't look out for them anymore ...... The music, videos, the content, and everything else was better in those days. Nowadays, it is all about tits, ass, the ya-yo, and money. There are very few videos of any music genre that I have found myself intrigued with.
Funny, because the music videos cost more.....I would have to say from a technical side they are better. The special effects are awesome. LOL it is also amazing how they can make someone look!!! Hahahahahaha They are more "cutting edge" but it doesn't mean it improves some of the music they accompany. From an artistic side, I think the directors like Little X, Nigel Dick, and Hype Williams are doing some incredible things. The directors are taking more risks and the music video is almost becoming more about the director and the storyline than the song itself. From the musicians perspective.... they are so edited and digitalized(some) it's very sad. The singers aren't necessarily great, and generally they are better dancers than singers. There isn't the mystique of a live band....it is all done in a studio. The dancing, however, is much improved as it is now a requirement to even be in a music video. The choreography is insane sometimes. They aren't as artistic though. The videos have become very similar and I agree with you about the Usher song. I mean the 90s pioneered the modern videos.....we have taken the nice and artistic editing and digitalizing they used to enhance the video....we now have made IT the video. I would love to see more unique and interesting videos. One video I love from the 90s is Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game". I think it is very interesting and was original in its day. Now we have a whole "make love on beach" genre. I actually liked the video Dre and Eminem did for "Voices". It was done in 98 or 99. It was interesting. Gwen Stefani is doing some interesting things....I like her "Cool" video. I thought it was interesting being shot in Italy and everything. I must admit I do like videos in the club like Rihanna's "Pon de Replay" Another good one from the 90s in the Fugees "Killing Me Softly"..... I LOVE THAT SONG! And in the 90s Lauryn Hill was doing her thing with all her videos from her "Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" album. I also liked the Janet Jackson and Busta Rhymes video for "What's it gonna be?" It is great technology and its 98. I loved Brandy and Monica in "the Boy is Mine" The video had an interesting concept. I think that Janet Jackson's new video "Call on Me" is interesting. It is not my fave song but the video has interesting effects and costumes. Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack" sounds really eclectic. The video is interesting too but again more technical. Artistically,I appreciate the 90s videos more than the recent ones, but technically speaking I would say now is better.... Just my little blurb
I tell ya, Michael Jackson probably had the BEST videos on TV, PERIOD, back-in-the-day... before he went completely crazy, and then started sleeping with little kids, playing with a pet monkey, dressing up like the Nutcracker, styling his hair like a girl, and finally, bleaching his skin just to make himself look like an Albino, only to have to walk around in the broad daylight sun, with an umbrella over his head held by a security guard, just to get into a limousine. Yeah, those were days... quality videos. Now, they are all the same... and, it doesn't seem to take too much creativity and imagination (as well as TALENT) to write and make them... in fact, YOU could make your own video right now, as you read this: All you have to do is: get a digital camera, a ton of make-up, some undersized or oversized glossy clothes, a bad hairstyle, a microphone, some back-up singers and dancers, and just get right to it... also, you have to look directly at the camera, and either pretend to sing well, or just scream in front of it a whole lot, or make ugly faces the whole time... or, you just film yourself sitting around somewhere, thinking about something that's supposedly profound and deep (overall depressing) and then whine about it with a singing tone, and lastly follow it up with the camera turning in every single direction of the room to film you in the exact same positions repeatedly, one after another.
LOL!!!! what an awesome sense of humour Sardonic but so true!!!!!! :smt042 :smt034 :smt020  :smt043
LMAO@Sardonic's post  I agree, MJ had beautiful videos. I don't remember much from then, but in essence, music videos from the 90's seemed more classy to me than what you see nowdays.
LMAO! Or just film your friends party in your living room next weekend. Oh, I just saw the video to "Give it Up to Me" by Sean Paul... I was like, what? a bunch of people hanging out at the gym? On a refreshing note, there were some white folks in the video, go find that in the 90's.

The best Video I have seen in a long time ThE Roots/ What they do The song is great and they basically make fun of all the Hip Hop/ Rap Video stereotypes. I am not exactly sure when I came out maybe about 5 years ago Other than that, I think when Busta Rymes and Missy Elliot did their 'Fishbowl" thing videos those were pretty cool and gladly had nothing (or not much) to do with the ass shaking you see today. Today's Videos are just boring, unimaginative and stupid but so is most of the music so at least they match
