*Boom* It's not the race of the cops, it's the subculture of police abuse of the marginalized (of all races, just acutely so in the case of the black community) in society.
You can go to any country and witness this shit In our case the black cops, with the exception of that one union who stood by the eric garner protests, are just as guilty as the white ones for not speaking out
The powerless get brutalized all over the world. It's just that over here the powerlessness has a clearly defined racial dimension that isn't as evident in Hong Kong, or Burma, or today's South Africa, or wherever.
Because that shit is totally unnecessary. There's no reason to be brutal to everyday citizens. There's more than enough criminals out there.
Me too. Call me an unreformed Marxist, but fighting racism is the first stage of class consciousness. Without a multiracial coalition, the people cannot take on capital, theocracies and all the other crap that is holding people down. True. But the powerful only know how to dominate. It's the nature of power generally, I think.
It's the nature of power with the greedy and unaware in charge. I recently read an article where the CEO Alibaba said that if you aren't rich by 35 you deserve to be poor. When people like that push that bs narrative its clear its not power but those in power that actually corrupt shit. That shitty mindset is destructive and just plainly untrue. It's 21st century Calvanism
Exactly. Coupled with a hearty helping of Social Darwinism. Check out this insightful article from a former St. Louis Police Department officer: http://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2014/12/06/i-was-a-st-louis-cop-my-peers-were-racist-and-violent-and-theres-only-one-fix/
It's this insane disconnect and truthfully I constantly rack my mind trying to figure out a way to get people like him to care but I honestly don't see a way. It's weird to see people like that that have everything act so greedy and shitty yet you have dudes like my man from Nigeria who gives up half his wealth to help the people. Humans are weird and insane.
But then you have to ask is it realistic for anyone to police the police because they only violate the rights of the poor and the powerless. Why should their bosses care? Why should anyone with any power care? It doesn't effect them.
That's why it shouldn't be up to them. There should be independent third party review of these incidents by an entity that is shielded from police union and right-wing voter pressure. And politicians share some of the blame for this situation, because they are the ones that have ultimate control over the departments. The lack of any legal protections with real teeth is their doing (or lack of doing).
But why should they care? No matter what their followers will vote them in and they aren't remotely effected by the brutality.
Well, it looks like I spoke too soon. And it wasn't just the Black Caucus, either. The Latino and Asian Caucuses co-issued the statement to the media. The popular front is an essential ingredient for change. This is good news.
Like I wrote before, on the east coast in places like New York and philly, latinos face the same discrimination we do. The interracial dynamic is much different than what people are witnessing in Texas and Los Angeles, where latino gangs are burning blacks out of their areas We pretty much stick together here
