I read it and it was surprising.

 

It sure wasn't to me. Goes to tell you that America is still far away from the dream of a "color-blind society". I've never bought that bull and am not anytime soon.

 

Well, the article implies that it's mostly nannies who are black themselves who are blinded by color. That's crazy. :shock:

 

But not shocking. We black folks in general have some REAL issues under the surface that we just don't want to deal with. Unfortunately, this article is simply par for the course and and symptom of a much larger, deeper problem.

I think what Silver said is exactly what the article is hitting at. Especially looking at the way it addresses the whole issue itself. Even though it concedes that black parents are often discriminated by whites, i think it's kinda outraged that equally black African or Caribbean immigrants do the same thing. About some blacks (especially African and Caribbeans) not working for other blacks, let me just say that i am not stranger to things like that, especially with Africans. As i might told you guys time and time again, Africans look down on black Americans and if they could, would have nothing to do with them. They regard African-Americans as loons, thugs and illiterate psychos and believe me, these sentiments held by even my own parents. I remember a friend of my dad who's also a Nigerian immigrant wanting to hire a workman one time and he specifically said that he did not want a black American. I was really shocked and could not believe my ears. One is not meant to do that but i could not even imagine a fellow human act like that.

Which is extra funny because many of these Africans would equally not want to work for other Africans because they believe they're too selfish, demanding and tend to want to mix sentiments with business; pretty much everything that New York Times article said. I do not know about other Africans but with Nigerians, a lot of them believe that other Nigerians are very shady and would dupe them in the blink of an eye so they're very wary of them. Which then leads me to think if they despise African-Americans, do not wanna interact with other Africans and sure as hell do not want white folks in their "bi'niss", - "business" for you slow folks - what on earth do they want? I cannot speak for black American folks because i do not really know where they stand on the issue, plus i was not raised in the States but i sure do know where Africans stand.

In fact, as the article beautifully opined, the discrimination is somewhat a "black" thing because believe me you, black nannies make up a large portion of the workforce (why am i not surprised :lol which does not surprise me one bit because many blacks, even though many are not willing to admit it, have some deep resentment for each other. Sometimes a lot of us wanna blame the usual target (whitey) but we need to have a reality check. I know this because of experience. At work, it happens. In churches, it happens. I have black American friends who tell me that one of the main reasons that they've stopped attending church (which tend to largely African American) is because of the attitudes of the members - usually gossips, jealousy, deceit and spreadind lies about one another-. If there's no hatred for one another, what else explains the reason why 4/5 of black murders are committed by
BLACK PERPS? What else could be behind the idea that most black robbers, rapists, murderers mainly other blacks? Black politicians who happen to be greedy are mostly elected by other blacks and spend lavishly black folks' money? In the black community (as well as in Latin and Asian communities), why is there a divide over light skin and dark skin? I believe the answer to all the above questions would be resentment to say the least. Black folks calling other folks "colored"? That's ridiculous.

And don't even get me started on the N-word.

 

It's really very, very sad indeed. :?

:idea: As in the article alot of it is negative perceptions generated by the media. Some of it also is brainwashing that is still very deep seated in minorities especially blacks that has come down through the years. :?

 

It is sad that racism exists within the black community. I don't think many white folks know this--I didn't until i read this topic--and that's a good thing, because if they did, it would justify and cement their eroneous racist beliefs.

I think the same kind of stereotyping exists in all races and ethnicities, though I can only speak for whites. The Irish are seen by many as stupid alcoholics, while the British are prudish and rude. However, since I was raised in Canada nd come from a mixed background myself, these stereotypes are less of an issue. In Canada, it matters what part of the country you are from.

I hope that in time, we evolve into a people that will accept each other no matter where we are from, what colour our skin is, or what religion we subscribe to. It probably won't happen in my lifetime; though there are some of us who do not see race or ethnicity as an issue, we are not the majority.
