    AHHH!!!!
    The Chaser!
I LOVE these guys... they are hillarious and REALLY popular at home!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOEWd_M5m44&feature=related
Check this out - go through to the end..
These guys were actually taken to court over this and a couple of other things they did - but it was real...they did actually get right into the middle of it all.

Praise God there are so many hillarious things in the world...
Here is my TOP 5 stupid things people have actually said to me since i arrived.

    5. Australia - what's your space program like?
    4. Australia - that's in the Southern Hemisphere, right?
    3. Oh, Australia is in Iraq too? (and also expresses surprise that we were in every conflict since the Boer War)
    2. Someone told me that it's summer there when it's winter here!
    1. What's your native language there?

And here's one that someone else told me...They were in LA and a guy asked him where he was from. When he said "Australia", he said..."Hey! Our, Governor is from there"...:smt022

It's just a fountain of Gold.

    Here's some more.

But, you know what - if you find any video asking random people anywhere in the world, they always look stupid. :D

I love these videos. I've seen all of them many times. Some of the stuff people say is a bit disturbing though. Some people seem to have extremely little respect for the lives of others...

Also I quite fancy this one:

Other people in the world like to believe that we are less intelligent than what we are, with the hope that they'll eventually catch up to us.

    Hope is important, I guess.

    I don't think you're less intelligent.
But I do think there are an overwhelming number of ignorants there...
You do too much watching tv, and too little reading...

And 1 in 3 Americans are high school drop-outs. That doesn't help either... If more people stayed in school, they might actually learn something.

People like to believe Americans are ignorant, not unintelligent.

It is hard, when you grow up there to understand how strong the geo centrism is of a so called world superpower.

Unfortunately, my list of silly questions from my time living in Colorado is very, very long.

Some people knew Sydney, but didn't realise it was part of Australia, yes the native language thing, etc.

I just laugh and answer it though, as long as you are willing to learn.

I found the news coverage very frustrating, I was craving more world news.
CNN actually has a clock that counts down "around the world in 60 seconds"..what if I want more than 60 seconds?..

    Chaser is hilarious. Love it.

Americans vary a lot in their levels of education. If you live long enough in the country, you'll realise that some of them are actually quite smart. It seems that Americans value pragmatism over intellectual sophistication.

And isn't the US the world leader in science and technology?

Also, the American universities are the top ranking in the world. The public high school education may not be as good as in Europe, but some say that the universities are actually better.

If they were "stupid or unintelligent/ignorant", they'd never be as competitive as they are. It's true that they're somewhat isolated from the world, but this is b/c the country's so vast and diverse.

    Wow. Thank you! :D

I get so tired of hearing how awful Americans are on this site sometimes. I appreciate the sentiments!

Staying in school has nothing to do with intelligence. Many highly intelligent people drop out of high school because it isnt advanced enough for them.

One of my best girlfriends is a scientist for motorola and has dozens of very important patents to her name. She was a high school dropout. Didnt get her GED until her thirties and didnt graduate university until her thirties.

Besides if people were to make diplomas bench marks for intelligence, then you would have to say George Bush is intelligent. Got all sorts of expensive diplomas to hang on his walls. LOL :smt005

The topic is serious. His approach to it is funny. He uses a bunch of sarcasm and irony.
For instance: "I know several smart Americans, and they both live abroad"

    I agree 100%.

Our relative isolation when compared with most European and Asian nations makes it difficult for us relate to people that live in smaller nations that reside in close proximity to each other.

I think our view of the world is very "U.S.-centric" but if you look at any powerful nation throughout history...you will see the same behavior. When England and France were the preeminent powers...they viewed their culture as far more advanced relative to others (why else did they feel entitled when colonializing Africa, Asia and the Americas?). When Spain owned the high seas in the 15th and 16th centuries...they looked upon the native peoples of the Americas and the Carribean as inferior...despite being quite ignorant of the highly developed societies they had. Every 'superpower' has a difficult time seeing past it's own nose...and I'm sure as China and perhaps India reach/solidify their status as powers...they too will fall into the same trap.

I agree. Intelligence has noting to do with education per se. But we're not saying Americans are stupid. We're saying you're ignorant. (By all means: not all of you.)

Stupid and ignorant isn't the same thing.

    Ignorant means:
    1. Lacking education or knowledge.
    2. Showing or arising from a lack of education or knowledge: an ignorant mistake.
    3. Unaware or uninformed.

    Stupid means:
    1. Slow to learn or understand; obtuse.
    2. Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes.
    3. Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless: a stupid mistake.

Well thanks for the education Ronja. I will remember my place from now on.

Now back to airplanes. I like them better anyways. Most people bore the fuck out of me.

    Eesh. Chill out people.
Yeah, I agree...America is quite ignorant...and I believe it's because you haven't needed not to be for a long time...Being that powerful gives you some immunity against the problems of the outside world. America has achieved a lot of amazing things and is really a nice place...but that doesn't mean there's not room for improvement.

Ignorance is a problem when you have the power, though. Its a bad combination of attributes. And whether you like it or not - being a super power means people look and judge a little harder. It goes both ways. It's like the good looking kid in class - people always want to find the weak point and bring them down.

Every country has its problems - God knows Australia isn't even close to perfect...and there are many things to laugh at.

But, if you can't have a laugh at yourself, then it's a sad world...
and if you don't acknowledge a problem, you can't fix it.

Don't Know Much about the World

It is a shame that some Americans don't know much about the world. In the news it is few and you had to go on the web to find it when it comes to world news. Wished there is more education about it.
