I don't know how many of you watch the tv show Survivor. I know that many of you don't watch "reality" shows. Survivor is one of the few "reality" shows that I sometimes watch, though I missed their most recent season. But here's an interesting article on the upcoming season which will be contested in the Cook Islands. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14484194/ Just wondering what you think about the racial teams. I started to put this in the Television section of the Forums, but many people don't check that section out. Peace.
I saw that earlier. I really think this is a step backwords because it encourages racial rivalry.. However.. from a network standpoint.. hey this sort of things will get attention and viewers thus boosting their ratings.
Im actually glad that they are doing this because they are so stupid that they are going to expose how racist towards black people they really are now that they are making it a race thing you know questions are going to be raised and the one question that waiting on to be raised is "How come there has never been a black winnner?".......And they so stupid they just might out themselves by having most of the black people kicked off because you know when come down to like the final five only one black person is going to be in there with about three white folks.
I think that it was bound to happen, especially with the complaints of racial inequity cast at the show. I mean you are in a tribe of 6 people and you have to vote people off the first to go is the one you have the least in common with first, then the one that pissed you off, then the most annoying and finally the most threatening to your position. That how it seems the voting goes on the show.
A black woman named Vecepia Towery won Survivor in 2002 when it was contested on the Marquesas Islands. She's from Portland, Oregon and currently lives in California. Her nephew is Roy Williams, who plays football for the Dallas Cowboys. Here are some photos of her: Peace.
Ya'll keep forgetting what "America" we all live in. I've never watched even a minute of Survivor since it first came on. I've been watching TV for years and it's always about race in some way. Or should I say, it's always blacks versus everybody else. Divisions are always formed when the cast mates are black. I noticed this when I visited a buddy of mine last year for a week and ended up watching a few episodes of "Big Brother." There were only one or two blacks on the show and all the white people seemed to bond amongst themselves. And there always seems to be some underlining conspiracy to get the people not perceived to be part of the group voted off. (Ironically, the black people who they don't bond with) Again, remember the point of Survivor folks. It's not to survive, God forbid. It's to sell to CBS's large TV audience. An audience of largely white american viewers. I can't stress enough that if the cast were too "colored," that those viewers would quietly tune out. This topic was discussed on America's Black Forum with some black actors who agreed with that philosophy. I agree with Kenny_G whole-heartedly that I too am glad they're doing this racial divide just to see how things pan out and get audiences talking. Only in America, I tell ya'll.
IT HAS STARTED ALREADY, JUST READ: NEW YORK (AP) - As CBS prepares to launch a new season of the hit reality show "Survivor," this time featuring teams divided by race, enraged city officials are saying it promotes divisiveness and are calling for the network to reconsider. "The idea of having a battle of the races is preposterous," City Councilman John Liu said Thursday. "How could anybody be so desperate for ratings?" For the first portion of the 13th season of "Survivor," which premieres Sept. 14, the contestants competing for the $1 million prize while stranded on the Cook Islands in the South Pacific will be divided into four teams - blacks, Asians, Latinos and whites. Liu, who is Asian-American, said he was launching a campaign urging CBS to pull the show because it could encourage racial division and promote negative typecasts. He and a coalition of officials, including the council's black, Latino and Asian caucus, planned to rally at City Hall on Friday. In a statement, CBS Entertainment, which is part of New York-based CBS Corp. (CBS), defended the ethnic twist, saying it follows the show's tradition of introducing new creative elements and casting structures that reflect cultural and social issues. "CBS fully recognizes the controversial nature of this format but has full confidence in the producers and their ability to produce the program in a responsible manner," the statement said. "'Survivor' is a program that is no stranger to controversy and has always answered its critics on the screen." Last season, the show divided contestants into groups of older men, younger men, older women and younger women. The show's host, Jeff Probst, said the network was aware this season's race ploy might offend viewers. "It's very risky because you're bringing up a topic that is a hot button," he told asap, The Associated Press service for younger readers. "There's a history of segregation you can't ignore. It is part of our history. "For that, it's much safer to say, 'No, let's just stick with things the way they are. Let's don't be the network to rock the boat. Let's not have "Survivor" try something new,'" he said. "But the biases from home can't affect you. This is an equal opportunity game." that bw who won was not publicize as the rest of the winners were, because when they the winners version of the show she wasn't even picked.
Yea, what a good idea! While they're at it, they should do a Black Panthers versus Ku Klux Klan competition also! Wouldn't THAT be fun? :smt011
is this a spoof? Call me crazy PC but I can't believe that, it's ridiculous! Would never get off the ground in Oz. No way. Actually, who knows. I stand to be corrected.Personally, I don't think its kosher to be overly politically correct, and think it often masks racism, anyway, and there is no need to tip toe all the time. But this, I'm shocked! Ridiculous. We have our own version and we also get the Amercian one usually, though the ratings have declined abysmally over the last couple of seasons. What I don't like is the desperate publicity stunt and ratings grab. Appealing to people's predjudices is a ltitle bit too sick, though It has been done covertly in reality TV for awhile- think 'Wife Swap' with the typical white-mum (mom, whatever)-in-black-family etc etc or vice versa, when the black mum is usually made to look silly in the white family. This HAS to be a joke though! I just can't believe it. It must be a spoof....
No its not a spoof. You're not the only person who is mad. This is picking up alot of controversy. Asian, hispanic, black, etc organizations and groups are setting up all kinds of things against cbs to protest this episode. CBS is loving the controversy.
Seriously though, this show is a REALLY bad idea. I don't like it one bit. Nothing good can possibly come of it. Are they trying to show that blacks will be better athletes, better swimmers, etc... are they trying to show that asians are better intellectually, and will outsmart everybody?? you know, just like all of you guys have said, this can only promote and re-enforce racial stereotypes. I can't believe that they're doing this for ratings. They've sunk to an all-time low with this one guys.
Those bastards at CBS/Viacom took me by surprise when they decided to do this. This seems more like something that Murdoch and his goons over at the News Corporation would try to pull off... and, I'm sure CBS is loving the controversy, because Controversy Sells, but the more recent problems that we have been having in this good ol' country with controversy like this is the fact that there are too many people in the public eye trying today, to be as controversial in one way or another as possible, just for the sake of doing so. In my opinion, the only time and way to be controversial is when a major issue is being addressed, and NOT FOR THE SAKE OF MONEY ALONE. But, not too many people these days who we call celebrities will ever grasp this concept of what I'm saying... after all, Money Talks, and unfortunately, that's all certain people can hear, listen to, and understand.
Yay! Sweet of you. Well have been super busy with work, study and (badly behaved, as it has usually turned out, hah) men! Lol. That's fine though, I came out of a four year relationship and have just been checking out what the world has to offer! It got a bit slow here for awhile but I am back to try and add some vigour and represent us all down under
There's Nothing really Controversial about this... What CBS is attempting to do has no Controversial substance whatsoever. The REAL Issue that will eventually surface is how they determined who belonged in which groups. That is what the hidden CONTROVERSY is ALL about. Remember what PRINCE sang about in 1978. "I just can't believe all the things people say. Am I black or white..." This is why people are so upset about this airing. How are they gonna determine who belongs to what group? Mark my words...
 I guess you guys have now heard the latest in that GM & Coca Cola along with some other major advertisers have pulled out of sponsoring the show.
