This is the very first time I've talked in public about religion. I'm not bashing someone's beliefs, just want to be left alone to do me.

Living in the midwest is difficult because I am surrounded by deeply religious people. I'm used to large cities where one could be themselves without fear of prosecution.

PS. Didn't say I was atheist.

    PPS. Love you too!

Well that is the God of all three Abrahamic religions; he even refers to himself as vengeful and jealous. It's rather disappointing to have a divine role model who possesses the same flaws as his mortal creations, no?

Plus, depending on your brand of Christianity, more punishment awaits non-believers when the ever-imminent Rapture comes!

When people often hold religious beliefs, it's generally ingrained into their livelihoods and VERY DIFFICULT to separate them from common sense understanding of the world and universe. Rather, they prefer to hold this idea that their faith shows equal validity and importance into the public ground, which is what I think some of my faith-based friends often fail to understand.

We don't mind you having a belief, at least in respect to the practices and belief in a supernatural being. However, it's when you insert those beliefs into places where they don't belong, especially in the form of education, where we're seriously lagging behind. This becomes a public problem and a detriment.

Keep your faith at home and in the church, and leave the rest to societal evolution. Sadly, separation of church and state, let alone the Treaty of Tripoli seem to be overlooked by so many people nowadays.

At the end of the day. ..Free moral agency and the power to accept or reject any belief is a great, great element of fairness. ...

Moderately fascinated by the Carrie Mathison character on Homeland, a highly manipulative and amoral woman. In real life you wouldn't want to be within 50 feet of such a person, but to have them protect your interests in hostile countries? Sure, why not?

I am anti-religion. Which to me means I stand against religion. I am not passive in my thoughts and feelings toward religion, yet I try not to be hostile toward it; unless provoked into hostility.

The religious are allowed and encouraged to speak of my damnation because my beliefs do not align with theirs. The religious are encouraged to minister to their faith in the arcane to the non-believer, but the non-believer is considered to be 'talking trash' when they respond that they think necromancy and sorcery to be ridiculous.

That's not why I'm anti-religion though. That is simply why I am not religious. I am anti-religion for all the ills that religion has brought to the world.

You are incorrect my friend. Fanaticism and greed bring the ills not religion. Christianity has been a source of great strength to black people in this country its served as a bridge between blacks and whites when language alone couldn't suffice. I detest the throw the baby out with the bath water mentality. Zealots are usually the loudest but they are rarely in the majority nor speak for all. Religion in the times its been cited for the woes the world was nothing more than extension of the greedy and lost. When applied correctly the beauty has been unparalleled, and this applies to atheists as well. You have douchebags who spend copious amounts of time trying to shame and degrade believers by saying they are stupid for putting faith in magical thinking but you also have those who just strongly believe in science and want to share that beauty with the world is Cosmos.

There is a good deal of sampling bias that occurs in the debate between secularism and belief. The "it's those guys, not us." argument does hold water in some instances. I am, for example, critical of Islam but have a good friend who is Muslim and rely on his example to generally color my views of his faith.

This is an ambiguous and self-serving statement as we are to assume that you, like knowing the secret recipe for Coca-Cola, have knowledge of what it means to apply religion properly. Isn't the lack of consensus as to what proper belief is a core problem for religion? Extraordinarily violent interdenominational and interfaith conflicts throughout history are rooted in that very problem.
