    Preach.

Sold to everyone as the all-AmeriKKKan dream but the shit is a nightmare more than anything. Especially if you have to deal with a Karen ass HOA concern more about optics of the home & property than the well being of actual homeowners themselves.

Nightmare is the perfect description! The ever increasing property taxes based on some arbitrary number they pull out their asses, along with insurance premiums that go up due to things beyond our control. It's so frustrating! My mortgage increased a little over 30% this year. And on top of that, the last few weeks of bad weather have caused and are still causing some serious issues I'm trying to navigate. I'm so sick of all this heavy rain and so stressed out right now.

Agreed regarding HOAs—more than anything they get off on controlling what folks do with their own damn property when it shouldn't be any of their business. I'm thankful I'm not part of one; owning a house is hassle enough already.

I feel on the property taxes. Ours have gone up over the last few years. Same with insurance.

Our HOA has calmed down quite a bit over the last few years so much to the point that new people moving into the development doing overly weird shit had become an issue for a brief period of time. Our house is right next to what is considered the development common area/park and we had a few people who were taking it upon themselves to leave old bread out for sea gulls & crows in the common area for some reason. Needless to say that didn't go over well with me & the Mrs. having primarily the crows clustering around our house after the fact being noisy as fuck & shitting all over the place.

I'm glad to hear they've calmed down. It's good when there's a healthy balance of them keeping things in check without being power-trippy about it. Hopefully they effectively dealt with the human bird feeders, because that sounds like hell.

It really is. Let me guess....has the crappy weather got you dealing with contractors and repairs? And homeowner's insurance is an absolute crock. It goes up after every single (or hint of a) bad weather event. Doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of having insurance?

I hate to tell everyone this, but I'm the president of our building's HOA. It sucks having to be in the Deputy Dog role, but we have mostly absentee owners renting to tenants who smoke weed in the common areas and have it coming up through the floorboards, because the owners don't allow smoking in their units; tenants who you can hear at all hours of the night cursing and mofo this, mofo that'ing and having speaker phone conversations all day long. The owners feel like we're under siege and have had to enforce some rules and regs just to get the place under control. That being said, we are not trying to be all heavy-handed.

An HOA for a building that rents living space is more understandable being heavy handed under the circumstances compared to an HOA for a residential housing development. Basically it's nothing more than micromanaging other peoples homes & yards by glorified property hall monitors or more properly & literally "yard monitors".

It hasn't even gotten that far yet. Other than one clear-ish day, the weather hasn't let up enough for anyone to get a really good look at the damages yet. One attempted appointment that particular day was basically the guy making the drive over to say "I'll have to come back tomorrow—no time to look at it today" but still expected to be paid for the service call. I told the asshole not to bother coming back. SMH Some things we've been dealing with ourselves in the meantime (my son has been a huge help). I dread the effect it will have on my insurance premium, but I'm ready to get this crap taken care of. It's not going to be pretty. Yep, homeowners insurance is a definitely a crock. They need to put the money folks pay into it for years to good use, and stop punishing folks with an increase for needing to use it.

It makes more sense in the scheme of things in that circumstance. There needs to be someone on hand to manage those situations to keep things under control. It's good that you don't go out of your way to be heavy-handed, but I imagine a heavy-handed approach becomes a necessary evil sometimes.

I concur 100% on your assessment of insurance companies. The homeowners insurance thing in Florida is completely out of control. The entire point of insurance is to have it when you need it. If you penalize people for actually utilizing it in circumstances beyond their control, it is an incredible disincentive to have insurance at all. I have listened to callers on talk shows on the topic who have opted to not insure their homes once they're paid off and they have sufficient savings, because the regular cost increases make it cost-prohibitive.

As for my term as Deputy Dog, our condo building owners who live in the building are understandably more concerned with the state of the building than the absentee owners/landlords. And we have to live withe the headache of living among their crappy tenants. And the tenants of course, don't give a damn about the state of affairs. I'm a leftist and pretty egalitarian, but the trifling behavior of some of them is for the birds. And we bought in an area reputed to be pretty nice so that we wouldn't have to deal with trifling folks. Oh well.
