FROM 1961 TO 1966 THESE POLLS WERE TAKEN..DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MARCHES AND STILL IN JIM CROW ERA THIS WAS THE ATTITUDE OF THE COUNTRY... 50 YEARS LATER GIVEN THE SAME QUESTIONS ABOUT PROTESTS TODAY DOES ANYONE BELIEVE THESE ANSWERS WOULD BE SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT?? http://www.crmvet.org/docs/60s_crm_public-opinion.pdf
That's why I find this whitewashed version of MLK that gets promoted in the mainstream media to be laughable. The civil rights movement wasn't viewed as a noble cause, even in the North where people claimed to disapprove of the South's Jim Crow laws. Here's an interview that MLK did on Meet The Press in 1964. The journalists who are peppering him with antagonistic questions were actually considered to be moderates or left-leaning at the time. Notice how they are using the exact same arguments that people use against contemporary black activists.
