Last night i was watching T.V. I forget the show when this commercial comes on.

Exterior shot- beautiful landscape. The view blurred as if the camera is in a car. Voice puppet begins pitch as the camera falls to a woman driver. She is white Sun roof is open and she tosses her hair in the breeze and shows the mandatory commercial smile. The comes to a stop and the sun roof Begin's it conversion as it slides into the truck. As this happens we say a man, sitting next to the woman, the implication for a moment, that they are couple.
But hold up, the picture opens up more as are revealed more people in the car, a man and a woman both white sitting and doing the mock conversation thing. The voice puppet gives the name of the car and it drives off. This not a point by point of what happened in the commercial but this generally what happened.

This isn't the first commercial done in such a fashion where we see a woman, white young, somewhere in her late twenties early thirties and then second we see a black guy, then another person after.

The ambiguity is interesting in the commercial. They could be in a relationship or not. He is could just be a co-worker or a friend who happened to sit in that specific spot at that specific time. And these sort of subtle things kind of dance with interpretative muscle of whomever is watching at one time. We all see different things true but there are certain cues that hint to what is or isn't going.

    just thought I'd mention it.

I saw that commerc. and thought the exact same thing. See, here's what I'm thinking.

It's point is to emphasize the enjoyment of the scenary behind them while being in the car. That being the experience of the car and the backdrop are "emotional getaways" from the troubles of life. Now, though it does look like the ww and bm in the front seat are together, they never actually look at one another. And even after she opens the rooftop, she never actually acknowledges the wm in back. I'm guessing they are all friends, or for some reason the two white people are together and let the bm ride upfront.

Remember, this is still America. And even in commercials, blacks and whites are generally never placed together in a relationship type setting. And while I'm thinking of it, have you seen the serious of insurance commercials where the peeps are talking and all of a sudden....bam!!! Well, how about the one where the four are coming from a movie and talking about crying over it. A bm/bw in the front and wm/aw in the back. My guess is they are couples. My point is isn't it Hollywood now to always want to put the white guy with the asian chick? They could have just as well put a ww in the back seat. Of course we know they weren't going to put a ww in the front with the brotha. Just stuff to think about.

I don't recall ever seeing this type of commercial, but I am sick and tired of those 'gamekiller' Axe Body Spray ones that dominate prime-time TV.

I saw an interesting commerical today. It was an old white man who was playing with his young granddaughter, who was obviously biracial. It was for blood press or sugar testing supplies.

Now that one is progressive. It is much easier to show a young couple, but to show an integrated family unit? They definately get my respect.
