On a national level, it's practically GOP central. So Governorship or Senator...you're bound to find a good number of GOP representatives serving those areas more likely, so the Democratic party really don't have a lot of strength in a staunchly conservative state like South Carolina. Any candidate, even Jim Clyburn would have a hard time getting into the Senate for obvious reasons. So, candidates for the Democratic party are generally unknown. To be honest, I kind of feel sorry for this guy. The felony charge is very unwarranted. Something like would only be justified if he did it repeatedly. But this was his first time doing this. If anything, he should have just been getting a restraining order from the university and should he break that...then prosecute him.
