Foreign aid is less than 1% of our GDP as is, and must of it goes to states in which we have a strategic interest.

You keep stating about welfare cuts, exactly what do you mean by that???

Do you mean welfare where anyone who gets financial aid from the government, regardless as to what it is called, should not receive anything?? My girlfriend's father is a farmer. The government paid him quite a bit of money to NOT send his products to market. They really didn't need the money because they are well off. The corn that he harvested has been sitting so long that it is now infested with field mice. There are also some military families who are receiving some sort of welfare. They wouldn't be able to make ends meet without it.

Does your welfare cuts includes EVERYTHING, farmers, businesses, military personnel, etc. or just people who YOU think are taking advantage of the government??? Welfare to me is any kind of financial aid received from the government regardless as to what it is called by name, that was not earned.

He just means anyone who might be brown and "lazy"

Consevatives act like food stamps and wicc checks are costing us a 1 trillion a year. You don't ever see them up in arms when the military spends millions on shit they just scrap like the stealth boat. Or occupying countries like Germany WWII has been over for 60 years I think we're safe.

A friend of mine posted today on Twitter:

If McCain had been elected what would things be like now? We'd be getting ready to elect a PROGRESSIVE in 2012.

    She has a point.

We almost did back in 2004 with Howard Dean. But when he made that outburst, all of a sudden he lost steam and we have a centrist-left John Kerry.

At least Kerry was centrist-left. Frankly, I'm still pissed off at John Edwards and Anthony Weiner for not keeping their, well, wieners in their pants. Both pretty damned staunch progressives, and with Edwards at least, a really deep understanding of the issues happening as a result of the widening income inequality gap in this country. Either of them could have made *such* a contribution, but both of them were hoisted on the petard of their egos and their libidos. Damned shame.

The only real progressives I can name off the top of my head right now would be Bernie Sanders, who doesn't have a prayer in hell of getting elected to anything outside Vermont, maybe Russ Feingold, and maybe Kucinich (who also can't get elected to anything outside his state). If any of you have any other progressive politicians you know of at the level of your city, state or nationally, speak up! I'm looking for people I can get behind. I just want to make damned sure they are for social and economic justice. And know how to keep their genitalia & its activities private.

John Edwards and John Kerry were to the left, but only slightly. Actually, Edwards nor Kerry didn't support same-sex marriage when they ran for President either. They basically stated they've supported civil unions with benefits. Forward to today, Kerry supports it. But Edwards? Unsure.

Anthony Weiner, however, I really like the guy a lot. He and Alan Grayson (lost his seat last year) were the perfect examples of progressive causes. Dennis Kucininch, Bernie Sanders, Barney Frank, Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi, and other individuals are also excellent examples. Whether they are electable or not remains to be certain. It's highly unlikely ANY progressive or strong progressive person can get into office unless we're talking 40 years from now.

And why is what? It's because this country will continue to be more progressive socially. But economically, that's a bit of a stretch. I think the younger generation are more educated on political ideologies like socialism and other areas of fiscal thought. As for my neck of the woods, the only real progressive is a state senator (who was my teacher in elementary school) named Karen Carter-Peterson. She advocates for a lot of the things we like.

What does it say about our people where we'll vote for monogamous asshole over cheating progressive. I could care less if your faithful to your spouse as long as you do right by the people of this country. Everyone who has ass raped us for the last 30 years were monogamous and in "happy" marriages. The one guy who got cheating lead us through 8 years of prosperity and a surplus when he left office. What does that tell you?

Yeah, I suppose Barney, who I've met a few times years and years ago when I worked for the State of MA. Pelosi isn't left enough for me. Boxer, maybe. I still believe that Edwards was to the left of where you put him, but that's because I followed him for years *before* Kerry picked him, so I know he was left of Kerry and moderated himself to be on the ticket :-(

And I think, and I know it may set off a hue and cry here, but I *think* the fastest way to get progressives in office is for the Republicans to take everything in 2012. It'll suck there is NO DOUBT, but it also might finally wake people up.

Not a lot. I don't give a rat's asshole about who *any* of them fuck, or worship, in fact I'd rather not hear about either. But it's hard to argue that Edwards has *any* political credibility left, or that Weiner does (had he been honest right from the start, it might have been ok - Edwards cheating on his cancer-ridden wife though, wasn't every going to come out clean)

Pelosi is very left-leaning, as is Boxer. Perhaps the only thing they aren't progressive are legalizing marijuana to help generate some revenue for the nation. That part, I'm uncertain of. All of the liberals you see in Congress, very few are willing to really project themselves fully mainly because they are not trying to keep their seat.

If you're in a center-right nation, the only thing you can bet on for progressive causes would be social issues and there would have to be a major push for a big progressive organization. Right now, many of them are relatively large, but faint in voice.

    You aren't serious are you???

Greece, Europe, Italy, etc. they are all going through the same thing America is, some even worse. Some of them have progressive people in office but with this GLOBAL financial melt down, it doesn't matter.

Don't get the republicans of old confused with the new republicans. The republicans of old were about pulling yourself up from your bootstraps and creating jobs. You can just follow what many of the republicans in office has done recently to realize they are a different breed.

The republican governors of Wisconsin, Michigan, etc. has raised money by cutting employees jobs. They have not created anything. They have passed bills to create a financial manager who has the power to go into any city and dissolve the cities government. Fire the mayor, the city council, dissolve the school system, dissolve any contract by unions that gives the workers the right to bargain for wages and benefits.

Earlier this year, it started in Wisconsin and has snowballed since. That was why you had the state workers protesting at their states capital. The NEW republicans are all about taking more and more from the workers to create money NOT creating jobs.

If the republicans had got in office and tried to pass a bill though the legislature that would curtain the businesses in their state for sending jobs overseas, I could see it. Even if they would just limit the amount jobs a company can outsource overseas, keeping the majority of the jobs in this country, I would even accept that.

But no, their idea was to eliminate jobs and take away the benefits from the workers. NO, you don't want an all NEW republican anything.

This guy(Barney) has to be one of the worse congress men I have ever heard of. How he keeps getting elected is beyond me.
