What would "you" do to influence your representatives in Congress and especially, your own representative for your area on providing safety and security) for the schools in your district? What would be a concrete "solution" to the problem of providing a safe learning enviornment without fear? This could go even further to the problem of bullying were in some cases children and young adults are taking guns to schools for safety and protection, an issue that never gets addressed.
I had posted that the vice president of the NRA, Wayne LaPierre did not look at the Miami-Dade County school system's school police program. They have Miami-Dade police officers who are present at all the schools and they are armed. Who needs any more than that? He's talking about teachers and principals packing heat. Yeah, right. I can see a teacher's desk have an apple on it next to a 9mm.
I firmly believe in the position that only professional security personnel should involved in providing safety and security in the school system. If this nation can put security marshalls on aircraft to stop a terrorist attack, then it can do likewise in the school. I will take this a step further. Let's enlist skilled retired policemen and women and those retired from the military as well with proven armed and unarmed skills. Let's even enlist with the security personnel in selected high threat areas "superdogs" (well trained dogs for special circumstances for the purpose of stealth attack on the killer). In Israel, this has proven to be highly effective from attacks that the Israeli school system had to deal with for years. I do not believe teachers and administrators should not double duty as security personnel unless, only in extreme cases in which only those who are willing to do so. Many teachers today will tell you point blank they will not do it. That they are there to teach. Besides, the teachers unions will not allow it anyway. The extreme left will fight any effort to bring armed security into the school system. We must also be careful of the extreme right that can try to justify extreme measures.
What the fuck?? Do we live in Yemen now??? If guns weren't so AVAILABLE to everyone you wouldn't need armed professionals on every street corner. You guys do realize LaPierre has a financial interest in suggesting that all adults be armed to protect against the bad guys?? Follow the money people. THe NRA is getting raw dogged from the back by the the firearms manufacturing industry. All the NRA cares about is helping firearms sellers sell more guns. Period. They don't give a shit about public safety or the 2nd AMendment.
You know shit is fucked up when people care more about having security in the schools rather than if the schools are properly educating our children, which based on the stats in comparison to other countries they are not.
I don't have one since there isn't one, never mind the fact I have more sense in my head than to waste my time on useless displays of chest thumping out of fear & anger. PS : Please don't attempt to go into a lecture on the how dangerous it is out there today, because trust me, I've seen more than my share of the ignorance and evil of humanity in my lifetime, so you or anyone else aren't telling anything new let alone fear. Death comes for all of us in due time so I don't waste time fearing it or any man/person for that matter. Keep a gun for the protection of yourself & love one's if you must, but stop living in irrational fear, because that's not living.
Courage under fire How an Assistant Principal With a Gun Stopped a School Shooter At 8 a.m. on Oct. 1, 1997, Luke Woodham, 16, bookish and overweight, drove a white Chevy Corsica up to his high school. That was already a sign of trouble: the young man had poor vision and was driven to school every day by his mother. But 3 hours earlier that morning, MaryAnn Woodham, 50, had been stabbed to death with a butcher knife in the home she shared with her son. Then.... Notice that day, 2 individuals had guns....one used his for mayhem and the other a law-abiding citizen used his for protection. "The moment Joel Myrick heard shots, he ran to his pickup truck, removed his Colt .45 from its case, removed ammo from another case, loaded his gun and went looking for the killer. He could have confronted Woodham much sooner, but for the fact that Federal law prohibits anyone but a police officer from having a gun in or near a school. "I've always kept a gun in the truck just in case something like this ever happened," said Myrick."
Do not be defensive. I respect your view and opinion. I too have seen my share of death on the streets of Baltimore in my time. I have lost many friends to the gun, knife, and baseball bat. Just remember, there will never be enough laws (those on the books are not enforced) to save us completely from those who want to kill us. Ask a Jew what his people thought about the confiscation of guns by the fascist (National Socialist Party) government from the populace before the Nazi Takeover in Germany. I live by the belief that anything is possible. To survive you must think that way.
True. Or this... Texas school district allows armed teachers HARROLD, Texas — In this tiny Texas town, children and their parents don’t give much thought to safety at the community’s lone school — mostly because some of the teachers are carrying concealed weapons. In remote Harrold, the nearest sheriff’s office is 30 minutes away, and people tend to know — and trust — one another. So the school board voted to let teachers bring guns to school. “We don’t have money for a security guard, but this is a better solution,” Superintendent David Thweatt said. “A shooter could take out a guard or officer with a visible, holstered weapon, but our teachers have master’s degrees, are older and have had extensive training. And their guns are hidden. We can protect our children.” Here is a full story to read on it... http://www.ksla.com/story/20387667/texas-school-district-allows-armed-teachers excerpt: Btw, frangible bullets are also what our armed airline pilots use as well as undercover Air Marshalls. Also- "In the days after the Newtown, Conn. school massacre, a growing number of states — including Oklahoma, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota and Oregon — will consider laws allowing teachers and school administrators to carry firearms on campus."
Umm....yeah...I'm not being defensive in anyway. Just not big on living life paranoid & in constant fear of everything and everyone. And I don't need to ask the Jews about the Nazis. Dealt with more than my share of ignorant racists growing up in the post Civil Rights South as a kid in the 70's & 80's that pretty much subscribed to Nazi like thinking in their own right.
There's not much more that can be done in the school districts here. They have been locking the schools since this lady shot kids in a school in a suburb of Chicago in 1988: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurie_Dann You have to be buzzed into my daughter's elementary school and say who you are and what you are there for before they let you in. I don't know how much more secure they can make the schools aside from metal detectors and armed guards.
Like I said, let the police or sheriff's department handle this. They can establish a school police force like the Miami-Dade school system. Uniformed as well as plain-clothes.
Security is one thing (locked doors, alarms, metal detectors, cameras, visitors being checked in & out, vehicle searches, etc.), but guns have no place inside a school. Teachers have no more business carrying guns than the students do. Even schools with armed security guards or police officers should not permit the guns to be carried inside the perimeter of the school grounds.
