The dems are pushing for it.

I beleive right now Puerto rico is a commonwealth of America.
They do not pay federal tax and do not vote in our election. But they can serve in our military, benefit from our tax dollars and get our protection.

    What are your thoughts?

I guess they should be a state seeing as they get all the priviledges of being in one.

I do not believe they should at this time. They have a 40% poverty rate. They would be entitled to some of the money that we can barely give to the states we have now. We would also lose electoral votes. They need to come up with a better bill than the one that is out on the floor. lastly, all americans should vote on it. Not just puerto rico. It will affect us all.

I don't know. It would take 38 states and I doubt some of the Republican one would not like a Democratic 51st state. Also, I hope the Puerto Ricans vote for either independence or statehood. They can't have their cake and eating it all those years.

They can't afford indepedence with the poverty rate that they have. I think it is really a question of common wealth or statehood.

Well, this time the vote for Commonwealth status must end. Being a state takes responsibilities.

I've never really researched this issue specifically so correct me if i'm wrong. I have friends from Puerto Rico and they've told me this has come to a vote before and it's been struck down in the preliminary phases, i.e. Puerto Rico ITSELF has voted against the idea.

If it comes to a point where they are close to ratification, I see no issue with adding them as a state as they really have been already for several years anyway.

Don't ever believe that idea that gets passed around that the U.S. is cash strapped when it comes to sharing wealth. The richest country in the world cash strapped??? Yeah, go figure. America has a SHIT TON of money. It only depends on how they choose to use it. China may own most of our debt, but how many nations are in debt to us? Look that up.

I hope you were not saying the USA is the richest country because Luxembourg is still the richest country on the planet.

In terms of GDP or GNP? How are you measuring wealth?

Make them a state or cut them loose. Now we're just ass raping them for whatever we need but can't legally put in a state. Case in point: nuclear testing. You can't do that in Iowa, they'd never stand for it. So, do it in Puerto Rico. It's not right. I'm not saying they have to be a state, but if you're going to be part of the US, you should be a state. Not just a bastard unstate. So we should fish or cut bait.

Its No 1 in European Union anyway, followed by countries like Finland, Netherlands, Ireland etc
Its often the smaller states who are richest and not the larger ones. At least in Europe.

The richest in Europe are as follows:
    Liechtenstein
    Luxembourg
    Norway
    Ireland
    San Marino
