I just saw those stats earlier. Despite being the south, I was a bit surprised that many people want it banned. It wouldn't surprise me if they just didn't support it, but banned? lol wow.

i know, that's real crazy shit man. this country is still divided on the issue of race. But before we jump the gun, we must realize that MANY black folk are against IR marriages too, not just white people. I know people within my own family and at work, that protest WW/BM unions. Just because you're black doesn't mean you get an automatic pass.
This IS Mississippi after all. I wouldn't be surprised by it one bit given the nature of their bigoted behavior. They probably forgot that they a little bit of that black blood in them too, given how their forefathers raped the black women (and also men) to reinforce their superiority complex. And what's ironic is that Mississippi apparently has been leading in the interaccial relationships stats since the early 2000s.
My only qualm about things like this is people's instant knee jerk reaction to it - the South is racist, ignorant blah blah. People (especially white "liberals") are especially guilty of this, and are willing to condemn them .... until you turn the tables on them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of the time when you hear of a black man getting "mistakenly" shot, it doesn't happen in Mississippi or Alabama. When you hear of a group of black kids getting turned away from somewhere because they look "out of place", it too often is not somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon. All these things happen in California, New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington, Massachusetts, New Jersey - sound like blue states to me. You try conducting a poll of interracial dating in the Northeast and see how "progressive" they are.
In all fairness the south's racial injustice is so ingrained in everyday life that when fucked up shit happens it's business as usual. That's why they stop reporting on murders in low income areas.
That's besides my point. I'm in no way bsolving the South of any of its faults, but that's a moot point. All I am condemning is the tendency by many to view this as reflective of the South, rather than what is probably a nationwide thing. In case you didn't know, the majority of the most segregated cities are north of the Mason-Dixon. And that's just one example. Northerners love to think of themselves as progressive and tolerant, until one of their daughters brings home Raheem, and then all hell breaks loose
Way more tolerant and progressive than the south where they drag people with trucks and rewrite textbooks. Northerners might throw a shit fit if their daughters date Raheem but at least they won't hang him. Granted I do agree there are a lot of segregated northern cities but outside of Boston and certain parts of NY its segregated by money not race. Not to mention we don't segregated proms up here and we don't have judges still going against interracial marriage, we don't have states still trying to succeed like it's the 19 century, we don't have schools telling school children not listen the President's address because he's trying to indoctrinate them. We don't have disrespectful congressman screaming out you lie to the president during a speech. Here's what we have in the north home of the country's first black President, home of the country's first lack black secretary of state, home of the first female senator, home of the ALCU, home of project innocense, birth place of Planned Parenthood, I could seriously go on and on. The south has come a long way but let's not pretend its still not the place where blacks are disproportionately sent to death row and it's not trying to abolish Roe V Wade. The North does have the right to act morally superior because history has shown that we are.
Nothing surprising they had been racists since the Goldwater days when the defection of Southern Whites made the party powerful in the Deep South.
Okay, let me get this right - because the first black Secretary of State and POTUS are from Northern cities, this somehow means that the North is far less institutionally racist than the South? I honestly don't follow. They may not drag blacks on trucks or hang them in the South, but they surely kill them in a much slower way - prisons. Incarceration rates are much higher in blue, Northern states than red, Southern ones. I am in no way saying the South is a paradise for blacks - far from it. Ignorance knows no geographical boundaries, and you can find a plethora of Northerners who want to segregate proms and abhor interracial dating. It may be conventional wisdom to associate such backward thinking with people from the South, but the North has its fair share of dumbasses. Let's not forget that much of the American slave trade was funded by wealthy Northern bankers and traders, not just Southern oligarchs. If the North is so great for black people, why are the same group of people fleeing the North in droves for the "New South" i.e. the sprawling metropolitan areas surrounding Atlanta, New Orleans, Nashville, Durham, Charlotte etc. Because the wealthy white elites have found their new pet projects in the North - illegal (Hispanic) immigrants who already are outpacing native blacks as the largest minority groups. I understand there is also an economic angle to it too, but the elite minority has never possessed a more potent divide-and-conquer weapon that racial division. Just as there were/are evil Southerners, there were also those of goodwill who stuck to their principles. Moreover, as someone who went to college in the South (well, technically Miami, but anything after the I-4 is pretty Southern in Florida) but grew up in New York and lives in suburban Washington D.C., I can tell you the discrimination and racism in the North, compared to down South, is much more subtle but even more dangerous. Redlining and racial steering is much more insidious in the North than you would care to know. There's a reason why many Northern cities have some of the elite prep schools but some of the worst public school systems (think Washington DC, NYC, Detroit or Boston). Despite what you think, social mobility has been more tepid for blacks in the North than in the South. Now obviously, the Great Migration of the 1930s - and the population surge that followed - has had alot to do with that, but black income for example flatlined in northern states since the 1990s. New York City is supposed to be a "melting pot", the most diverse city on earth, I have never seen such a segregated city in my life. Maybe Chicago gives it a good run for its money, but New York City has appalling race relations. Surely you know this. I am not saying the South is perfect by any means, but the North has its own method to its madness. They're just not overt about it.
