I say the event of the decade was the Islamic attack on the United States on 911. What say you.

I couldn't decide what out of the 3 below would be my response, so i'll say all three:

    the tsunami in 2004
    black saturday
    bali bombings

oh and of course...john howard not being re-elected

I forgot about the Tsunami!!! ugh, it whiped out a significant portion of the Swedish population, 543 Swedes died and Sweden lost a bigger chunk of their population than anybody else. Over 3000 Swedes were missing.
I dont discount losses by everybody else but in a country with only 9 million people, everybody truly was somehow affected. It was truly a weird time.

It's hard to pick one thing to define a whole decade, but I would probably put Obama's Presidential election as the number one event. Followed by events like 9/11, the many different natural disasters the world saw, like the tsunami and the hurricanes....

The Obama event was a global sensation.

Not to discredit hurricanes and other great natural disasters but those always happen.

Of course people in the US would care about it more than anyone else but it doesn't take away from the fact that it was an extremely rare event that has never been seen before.

I'd say the 9/11 event is right up there considering the rarity of it all.

These are of course, my American biased thoughts. I'm just sayin'.

I can see how one would argue that Obama being elected may have been the biggest event. If someone said back in 1999 that we would have a African-American President in 10 years, this would probably be my response:
