The Job Search Thread!

I've been thinking about this thread for a while so I decided to make it. It is mostly here to talk about how you job search is going or even how you think the trend of jobs being add is working.
Mines is terrible. I hate interviews so much but I have to put a fake smile on.

No one interview is close to the other. It is like I can't catch a break or something but I keep going at it.

Me...I got fed up with my previous job about 4 months ago, quit, sent out a bunch of resumes/applications to any ole place...Landed at a small hotel property working as a front desk agent making peanuts $9.75 a hour with a bunch of youngminded, drug addict, degenerates... and I enjoy it surprisingly! It's like a vacation from "real" work.

 

Don't fuck with Career Builder, Monster, etc. waste of time. Go straight to the comapny/business website. Try to network, everyone you speak to, you should try to bring up the fact that your looking. It's not embarrassing unless you make it that way, don't sound desperate nor entitled. But the more people know, you heighten your chances of quality work and viable opportunities.

 

i think it is going to be tough june-july...august will show an upturn in jobs...my company is only hiring if someone leaves a high volume territory...we will add new jobs in august-september

i agree with freshy...let people know you are looking...i'm sure i don't have to tell anyone here that the best time to look for a new job is when you are gainfully employed...i think too many people wait for downsizing layoffs or when they know they are skating on thin ice and about to be fired...

i am currently looking to fill a position for a direct report to me and i am amazed at the resumes i received...this is a job that pays 45K and i have had people with mba apply...way over qualified...i think people just want to get back to work...being unemployed for too long is not a good thing unless you can use that time strategically

Yea, It is tough out there. I just had an interview with a vey well known company that I know I will not get the job even before I had the interview. I just tossed it aside and said I 'll wing it and practice. I asked one long question at the end he gave me a long answer. During the answer, I was thinking I am not getting the job and why are you bothering to exlplain so much when both you and I know you aren't hiring me. I got another interview friday.

 

careerbuilder has worked for me. simplyhired and indeed are best though.

 

Most companies hire in September and January.

And fire in October/Nov, so I've heard. Something to do with the fiscal year end.

Would you hire those people, or would you pass on them thinking they won't stay with the company long enough etc? I've been applying for jobs recently that are way below my ability level and I wonder how potential employers view that...

 

unfortunately not unless they had industry experience...most people that work in the cosmetic industry do not have an mba...brands feed off of each other...we would either promote from within or poach someone from another company...

 

Right, but if they were qualified for the position, but had extra qualifications that you deemed made them over qualified, would that be to their disadvantage?

 

not at all infact the girl i was going to hire was over quallified and could have made more money with another company but she liked some of the perks we had to offer...the person i was about to replace changed her mind and decided to stay...she was offered more money and weighed her options and came up with this being a better fit for her family...we recommended the other applicant apply for the position my DM didn't take...she started on tuesday...win/win for everyone

i landed my current job because i told everyone that would listen that i needed employment and i still have people offering me jobs because of that (and i take the jobs if its on the weekend and i don't have my children).

Thats funny, most people I know that try and use especially career builder say they little to no success. Just goes to show you there's no exact science, right qual's at the right time...

 

I could only think logically of a couple minor drawbacks for you being overqualified....I also think it kind of depends on what you do and what you're going/looking for.
