"Well, he does THAT kind of art because of his RACE!"(*)

Or..."The GARY SATO Story"


No, NOT a celeb you "know", per se..

But, just like the rest of us pencil-to-the-grindstone grunts in studioland, you HAVE seen his work.


The bloke is an American-born 3rd generation Japanese fella.

Through and through Yank in his speech, diction, mannerisims, lifestyle, etc.


So what's the big deal here?


Not too long ago (about 4 or 5 months or so) he was asked to do an art assignment for an ad by one of the regional dailies.


Here's the thing: the fella in charge wanted Gary to do the art in Japanese Anime style...something that he's NEVER done...and never considered doing..HIS style is more on the order of a Gothic Humour style a'la The Much Regretted BASIL WOLVERTON....WITHOUT one SCRAP of a "HINT" of any "Asian Influence" WHATSOEVER!

And Gary TOLD his supervisor so....


To pretty much no avail..



The supe (An older White fella) shot back: "But you're an ASIAN guy!"

(* - Pretty much, this is the attitude that the supe obviously must has/had about ANY non-White individual and their so-called traits, characteristics, qualities, personalities, lifestyles and such.)

The dickering went on well into the evening....after which Sato capitulated.


He *did* deliver the "Anime"-style art to the dailies advert...


Mind you, it looked VERY much like a W.A.S.P. fella's attempt at TRYING to draw in said style.

And he WAS paid HANDSOMELY for it..


To make a long story short, after that assignment, he gave the establishment his 2 weeks notice....


And then, when he went into the office to tender his resignation, without saying a word, he flung his employee ID badge and security admittance key card into said supe's face, turned and stomped out of the building.


Rightfully so, IMO, and there were NO repercussions or retaliations of ANY kind on the part of the supe. (Or do we say "STUPE"?)

And by the way, that ":smt038" at the 'heading' of my thread was my CHEERING for Sato and his exodus from...well...YOU know....


Just wanted to tell of this "Slice-Of-Life" story about how SOME people make the DAMNDEST assumptions....merely based on ethnicity.

More to come on other incidents of this nature very soon...


But in conclusion, I just wanna say that..IF Sato *weren't* averse to leaving The States, I'd LOVE to have the bloke aborad at Opinions.
