Hail to Archangel and Flaminghetero for seeing the light and supporting the rationale. ......No one advocated segregation. ....the suggestion merely proposed a form of self policing and......an alternative that would eradicate racial tensions. ...

    Basically

The good news tho is that the charges wouldn't be racially motivated

It would just be seen as what it is....out of control policing

The response when something is broken is not to flee from it, it is to fix it.

Sounds good but the reality is why risk my well being and that of my family?
It would be one thing if it were just the cops but when the public eggs this shit on how do you even change that?

Are you speaking for yourself or the fabled 'good cops' who refuse to fix their departments from within

As a New Yorker, would you think that it is a good idea to fire the police department and rehire with a clause of No Unions?

Boston did this and it worked out well for a former president.

Man I'd hate to be in NYC the day they dismantle that sprawling department

Yeah that's the problem because the huge police force is brutal but it keeps crime down big time. It allows for commerce and people to walk the streets feeling safe but on the flip side they don't seem to be able to discern regular people just minding their own business and criminals

    Seriously

You have scumbag cops but be honest.....without police patrols philly would be an even shittier city to live in, lol

People are crazy enough to shoot on the block with a police precinct a few blocks over...imagine what would happen without it

Every citizen would be armed and this shit would look like Baghdad

I thought you guys had a state police. Wouldn't the governor be able to use that until they could establish nycpd?

Nypd has 30,000 plus officers...just for one city

If the state police could front those numbers without putting other areas at risk, I'd eat my socks

Remember the film Fort Apache: The Bronx, with Paul Newman and Ken Wahl(from Wiseguy)? I see that happening.

I don't think you dismantle the entire department, you just give them a different set of incentives. If jackoffs knew they would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, they would stop a lot of this. They're rational utility maximizers like the rest of us. End arrests for nonviolent misdemeanor offenses, replace them with citations. Have independent third party investigations of these incidents by outside groups with no political relationship to the jurisdictions, etc. It wouldn't make things paradise overnight, but it would be a good first step.
