White Americans' majority to end by mid-century

WASHINGTON – The estimated time when whites will no longer make up the majority of Americans has been pushed back eight years — to 2050 — because the recession and stricter immigration policies have slowed the flow of foreigners into the U.S.

Census Bureau figures released Wednesday update last year's prediction that white children would become a minority in 2023 and the overall white population would follow in 2042. The earlier estimate did not take into account a drop in the number of people moving into the U.S. because of the economic crisis and the immigration policies imposed after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

The 2050 estimate is one of four projections released that is based on rates for births and deaths and a scenario in which immigration continues its more recent, slower pace of adding nearly 1 million new foreigners each year. Demographers said that scenario offers the best look for now at the future demographic makeup based on current conditions, rather than other models which assume higher rates of immigration.

The United States has 308 million people today; two-thirds are non-Hispanic whites.

The total population should climb to 399 million by 2050, under the new projection, with whites making up 49.9 percent of the population. Blacks will make up 12.2 percent, virtually unchanged from today. Hispanics, currently 15 percent of the population, will rise to 28 percent in 2050.

Asians are expected to increase from 4.4 percent of the population to 6 percent.

The point when minority children become the majority is expected to have a similar delay of roughly eight years, moving from 2023 to 2031.

The population 85 and older is projected to more than triple by 2050, to 18.6 million.

The actual shift in demographics will be influenced by a host of factors that can't be accurately forecast — the pace of the economic recovery, cultural changes, natural or manmade disasters, as well as an overhaul of immigration law, which may be debated in Congress as early as next year.

As a result, the Census Bureau said the projections should be used mostly as a guide.

The agency also released numbers showing projections based on "high" rates of immigration — more likely if more-flexible government policies and a booming U.S. economy attract large numbers of foreigners — as well as "low" immigration, a possible scenario if U.S. policies don't change much while the economy substantially improves.

_With high immigration, the minority "tipping point" is moved up to 2040, two years earlier than the previous estimate. At that time, Asians would have a much larger share, at 8 percent, since their population growth is more dependent on immigration than birth rates.

_With low immigration, the "tipping point" arrives by 2045.

Under a purely theoretical "zero immigration" scenario in which the U.S. effectively does not take in any immigrants, whites would remain the majority in 2050, making up a solid 58 percent of the U.S. population. In such a case, the share of Hispanics would increase to 21 percent because of high fertility rates and a younger population.

Under a "zero immigration" model, the 65 and older population also grows substantially faster, comprising nearly 1 in 4 Americans.

"These projections show that immigration will serve to replenish our labor force as baby boomers age into retirement and make our population younger without overburdening our schools and other community resources," said William H. Frey, a demographer at Brookings Institution.

It's inevitable. I will be in my 70's in mid-century.

Be mindful about this, that's means racism will be long gone by mid-century, it means we're free from racism at long last. This is what Star Trek utopia looks like in the process. But if whites in the process to disappearing by mid-century, there won't be anymore white chicks for me to love to begin with.

Again, it's inevitable that it's happening in the process right now.

 

I find it interesting that the black population will not increase from today according to that article. I wonder why? As far as racism is concern there will always be racism. As far as the decline of the white population, will things be any different? I see the decline of the white western world in general taken over by the third world. Can you imagine the competition for the few available white females. Enjoy the world as we know it now before it's gone.

The article clearly states that Blks will remain at 12 %, that would most likely make Hispanics the majority. If you think hispanics are going to treat blks better than whites, you are sadly mistaken and have never step a foot in California.

Racism is about power. He who has the gold makes the rules. Blks- do not have the power balance tilt to us. The majority of us are undereducated, imprisoned, disease-ridden, killing each other, etc....
We do not own homes, we do not graduate from college, so many problems in the community to list. Just fucken sad. And y'al thought November 4, 2008 was going to transform blks life in America. I did not think so then and I don't think so now.

 

Either way, racism will be disappearing, no matter what. But it's all about a power control, you say? I tend to disagree with you.

There will be racism between other groups. It should not matter what percentage is White, Black or Hispanic. We shouldnot have racism.

 

Agreed, but we do not live in Utopia world. We live in the real world. Racism is alive and well here in America and there in your mother land France. It was not too long ago that the Africans and Blk french citizens almost caused a mini revolution in paris and other cities of France due to Racism! I believe it was in late 2005 or something like that.

 

What is the reason that it´s running so wrong in the States. Since I am here I watch more about racism here in Switzerland and it´s true some times you meet these kind of racists, but really very rarely. I was talking to mothers of biracial kids, whether these children have problems and they all say, absolutly not! The teachers are very strict about this topic, special conferrences in school are made for parents. They visit the same schools, as every one and a son of a friend is hired to (junior) FC Chelsea, now.

In Germany there was a beating a few years ago between whites and one, I guess from Jamaica. That was a big trouble for government, demonstations against racism in all big cities.. at the end ( he was in koma) this jamaican said by himself, it was his fault, he was very drunk and started the fight.

We have racism here, for sure, but not as you describe..

 

Christine-you have to know American history to answer your questions. America is founded by blood and war. The sad thing is the majory of young ppl, my age and younger or even older do not know and appreciate the history of this country. One has to learn the past inorder to understand the present.

 

The black popualtion numbers havent increased since the 1970's.

Theire has to be more black folks in this country than what the census is reporting.

Either black folks need to start breeding, or they need to fill out them census forms which I think is the problem.

 

White people ain't goin nowhere.
