I might be taking a possible job offer in Miami when I finish my graduate program in May. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with that city in terms of interracial dating between black men and white women. I know there's been a lot of talk about New York supposedly being one of the most open cities for BM/WW IRs, but what is Miami like? I can't wait for a chance to check out Miami South Beach. I've heard so much about that place and seen so many pictures of women who tend ot hang out there...it seems as if that city has an over supply of attractive women, especially the ones with nice, big and curvaceous booties that I have a special weakness for. Also, is anyone familiar with the universities in Miami, such as the University of Miami, etc.? Is interracial dating common among students in the schools there, and also among staff? Last question, is there a historical reason for the seemingly very large population of Latinos in Miami? I heard that they make up the majority population in the city.
Somebody told you N.Y. was one of the most open cities to BM/WW? I can assure you it isn't. I've heard some good things about Miami though. I think Cris might be the one to ask about the Latinas.
Shaft, I think we need to get you married off with a white woman soon you have the fever bad. You will find that it only takes just one white woman who likes a black man and you really don't need to find a one place where white woman who loves black men. Yes, everyone have heard of stories of "South Beach" but you have to have the cash to wine and dine these women and they can be as fake or unreal as their bodies. If you do get that job in Miami take your time in selecting any of the women and concentrate on that job first, the fun will come later. Happy hunting, Shaft.
My dear friend Shaft   . I am sure i can help you a lot on this seeing as i reside in Miami. Just so you know, Miami is different to the city of Miami Beach but you'd be in good company if you get it mixed up as the majority of Americans( and people in general) do. So never mind that. First of all, i want to congratulate you on all you're doing and i hope you get the job offer in Miami. It must mean that you're adept at what you do because South Florida's job opportunities are very, very severe. I remember when i first came to Miami on the 26th of February 2000. That was when i was preparing to go to college and i had a few college campuses i wanted to visit, University of Miami being the most prominent. My interest in South Florida was way beyond the superficial; it was always somewhere i had being dying to visit for so many reasons, such as its wealthy cultural diversity, arts, musical scene amongst many. I had never been to Florida at the time; moreover, the furthest i had gone to upon my return to the United States in '98 was probably a road trip to Chicago from New York City. So without a doubt, my visit to Miami was one to look forward to. My father had worked in Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach but i had never been there. He told me a few things about it but nothing compares to seeing for yourself. I had a little idea of what South Florida was going to be like but like i previously said, nothing compares to testimony from you. When i came in 2000 just to look at the campus, i simply came just for the sake of it. At the time, i was not my final option and i thought that if they had not accepted me, then i'd go somewhere else (I also applied to Columbia, NY; Boston University and University of Southern California by the way). But i was hoping for Miami the most and thanks be to God, it came through. Everything about Miami was just so impressive; its weather, beautiful skyline, fast life and don't even mention the beautiful women 8). So when i got my letter that i was accepted at the "U", you know i went head over heels. I was so pleased that i did not give a fuck no more about no Columbia, Boston University of USC. Of course i could weigh up my options given that life in Miami was costly but i didn't care; i had my parents to take care of my expenses  In my 6 years of living here, it has been a total blessing. I mean, like totally. As i have mentioned previously, i studied Law at the University of Law(including the 1 year course i did in the London School of Economics in England). I did Law with a language [Spanish as you'd have guessed]. The life on UM was a fantastic experience and i cherished it more than anything else. College life was certainly one of the best experiences of my existence. The facilities are great, the students are wonderful, the campus is perfect in the beautiful town in Coral Gables. I liked the fact that i live far away from my parents in New York City where i am independent, but i can run home when i'm need of anything or if i need a break. On the question of interracial dating, oh my God it is totally rampant here. In fact, it is one of the things i liked about Miami; the fact that there is so much cultural diversity and you see people of different races and ethnicites holding hands; it is such a beautiful feeling. I dated white women, Latin women(my favorites, i have a soft spot for them 8) ), Pacific Islanders; you name it. That is one of the great things about Miami; it's more laid back compared to cities like Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago et al. No one gives a rat's ass what the next person does. Interracial dating is and always has been a custom here in South Beach because there are so many races of people to begin with. Do not get me wrong, racism still exists and there are some hateful bigots but it is the same everywhere. The white women and Latinas really are digging brothas over here, even better than New York. It is not uncommon to see black men with a blonde, white woman or a petite, long, dark-haired Latina. Please do not even let me get started on the beautiful women in South Beach. I'd literally write you a whole chapter. This place really is temptation, especially for a man like me who's committed. But please bear in mind, there are lots of snobby, annoying women who, for the most part, are not even as rich to begin with. But they try to act it especially when they figure out you're not from the area. The thing about this South Beach thing too is that the women tend to be a bit materialistic and probably would not give you the time of the day if you are not well to do. I am not generalising and there are many great women here but there are the bad ones. These type of women tend to be around the North Beach district area so i do my best to stay away from them. However, all of this is just my opinion and might defer from that of other people. About the large population of Latinos in Miami, i think the most obvious would be its proximity to Cuba and Florida Keys. Latinos have always been an important part of the development of this city. After the arrival of the Tequesta people, many Spaniards especially Juan Ponce de Leon and Pedro Menendez de Aviles have explored this place and Cubans especially have contributed to Miami's development. They always have been here but after the 1959 Revolution, the one that ousted Fulgencio Batista and put Castro in power, many Cubans moved more and more over here seeing as Castro was just stripping people off their civil rights and by the end of the 1960s, there were about 500,000 Cubans in Miami. The 80s finally established Miami as a second Cuba after the Mariel Boatlift of 1980. A lot of poor Cubans came over here from Cuba and the vast majority have assimilated into mainstream American culture, unlike Pat Buchanan and compatriots would have you believe. They have set up their own communes, properties and businesses and are doing fine, contrary to the stereotype of them living in Little Havana hustling drugs and importing Cuban cigar. Recently, more Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Haitians and South Americans(especially Colombians and Salvadorans) as well as Central Americans have moved here. They are moving in to predominantly Latino neighborhoods as well as other neighborhoods. Even Other Carribbeans, Europeans and Africans have been moving here too. I live in the South of Fifth with my fiancee which is quite diverse, although whites remain the majority. However, there are even much more diverse areas like Flamingo Park and Collins Park. The main reason why i love Miami though, is because it's where i met someone really special to me; someone i mentione virtually all the time here; someone who's the dearest gem in my collection. That person is my beautiful fiancee, Eva. She, like me, moved here after she graduated from Stanford and opted to move out here instead of returning to her native Los Angeles. She received job offers from San Francisco and some in L.A but decided to move to another new place. Little did she, and I, know that we were destined to meet here!!!! That's my #1 thanks to Miami. I hope you come over here, Shaft. You'd love it as opposed to shitty Philadelphia   Joking!!!! But keep in mind, Miami is very expensive to live in. In fact, it is, according to sources, one of the least affordable cities in the U.S.A to live in. Even for natives let alone newbies. So save up some major bucks or be ready to work your ass off.
Thanks, Laydeez Man Chris LaydeezmanCris! It's always a great pleasure to read what you have to say, man. Your response to my post had me really fired up and excited. I can't tell you how many companies I have sent my resume to only within Miami and the Miami Beach area. If I could get a job there, maybe we could meet up sometime. I'm applying for jobs in Journalism/Communications and Public Relations, as well as teaching positions within a few universities there. Oh, how I wish I could get that super big booty white lady of my dreams if I ever get a chance to move there. That's my greatest weakness. Sure, I of course would love to get engaged to and eventually married to a lady with an awesome personality, but I want one with one of the most humongous booties imaginable. Tell me also bro, I'm also very interested in film/TV acting and modeling. Is it a big industry down there in Miami as well? I'm working on so many things-trying to get a novel published, trying to complete a screenplay, etc. Modeling and acting have always been my primary dream. So between New York and Miami, which city do you think is more expensive? Another thing is that although I've been living in the U.S. for such a long time, I've never really been able to get used to winter. I don't like winter at all. I'd rather settle in a city that is warm throughout the year. The only thing I'm worried about with Miami is the hurricane and flooding aspect. If I were to get an apartment there, where would you suggest that I get a place? (a safe area that also wouldn't be exposed to possible hurricane and flood damages) Speaking of Philadelphia, that city is becoming unbelievably violent. The year isn't over yet and we're already at 392 murders. Every single day, someone's getting shot. I don't feel very safe here at all anymore. Take care, man.
You seem very ambitious, Shaft and i like that a lot. I can fully relate to you in that you have sent lots of applications within the Greater Miami area. I did the same last year so i can feel your pain. But luckily for you, Public Relations and Communications seem to be one area that Miami can offer you a lot in. I am a little iffy about the teaching area as i am not the best man to inform you about it but you can find out and i can as well if you need me to. Miami is a very big spot for film/TV acting and modeling. I am sure you know that there were/are many T.V shows and programs based in Miami such as CSI: Miami, Nip/Tuck, Good Morning Miami and the ultra-cool Miami Vice. There are the large-scale Spanish TV programs and shows often shots in hotspots Hialeah and Doral. There are game-shows, talk shows, news programs and telenovelas like Sabado Gigente, El Gordo y La Flaca and La Mujer de Mi Vida, all of which i am a big fan of. But the thing is you gotta be able to understand Spanish to watch 'em. 8) Also, lots of modeling is done here and on a daily basis, you can see fashion shows here, particularly in Ocean Drive and Washington Avenue. Sometimes, even i get mistaken for a male model because there are so many models where i live, whether professional or wannabe. About journalism and literature, you're in the light for that. There are many book clubs, libraries and bookstores you can contact as well as several agencies. I intend to write books myself and have spoken to several attorneys in my firm and they've told me to inform them if and when i am ready to do so. There are theatres and ballrooms to get your acting stuff done just in case you need to. There is the WaterFront Theater in American Airlines Arena where Broadway and other stage shows take place. Those are other options apart from New York City and you have better assistance here than in NYC so i'd rather do all of that here. The weather should not be a problem. It is often warm, rarely snows and the cool night-time breeze is one to love. I do not like the winter at all and that is one of the reasons i wanted to get out of the Northeast. I remember when i first came back to the USA in '98 and i used to get really cold; i used to literally swear i hated it and would say i wanted to return to Nigeria. But yeah, i hate cold too. As you mentioned, there are often natural disasters, yearly by the way. To be honest, there is not one part of Miami (or Florida for that matter) that is immune from natural disasters. But the inner cores of Miami and the places not too close to watersides are much safer. Usually, they call a state of emergency and everyone would take cover. Lastly, get out of Philly, man. For real!!!
Re: I can't wait to leave Philly, LaydeezmanCris...just as long as I don't end up drowning in a flood/hurricane in Miami! Just kidding. But honestly, I really would love to leave Philly as soon as possible if I get a chance. So I take it based on your response that Washington Avenue is a safe place to live in and it's probably not very close to the water at all in terms of hurricanes and flooding. I know there's no guarantee of 100% protection, but if I ever get to move there, I would love to live in an apartment complex that is safely far away from the water as possible. Speaking of film acting, modeling, etc., would you happen to know if some of the cable companies-Comcast, HBO especially, etc. have offices in Miami? If I got a full-time job, I wonder how I'll be able to audition for movie roles and to check out open calls at modeling agencies. The story for the screenplay I'm working on takes place in Philly, but I dream of starring in it if it ever got picked up by a production company. So if I ended up moving to Miami, I don't think I would like the production to move to Philly just because of the setting. Man, I really hope that I could meet more open-minded women in Miami than all of the ones who I have unfortunately met so far in Philly. I was wondering if you're familiar with a gym called LA Fitness. It's become very popular within these few years and I noticed that they seem to have about 15 or 16 different gyms in Miami. Would you happen to know of any LA Fitness gyms that are located close to Coral Gables and Miami Beach? I currently go to one of their locations in Philly and if I ended up moving to Miami, I would like to swith to a location there. If you need me to cut and paste all of their Miami locations from their Web page to perhaps help you answer my question, just let me know. I chose not to do so in this post because it's already long enough as it is. One last question: that North Beach district where you say there tend to be so many superficial women...is it within the same vicinity as Miami South Beach?
What's up Shaft and Cris? Thanks for the heads up on Miami, I have never been to Florida. I always heard BAD things about Miami for black men, I guess I have too many shots of Liberty City and 2 Live Crew in my head. One of my friends lived in Detroit and Miami and said he would rather live in Detroit. Now THAT's saying something. Shaft, get out of Philly as soon as you can. One of most unlikable cities I have ever been to. They hate EVERYBODY. And I'm not even talking about the Jersey side. Spend a day in Camden or Pennsauken. Highly depressing. Just wanted to throw my two cents in. Good topic! Black Tiger
Well, what you've heard about Miami is true. So my advice, is that if you have the chance to move to Miami, DO IT. You will not regret it. as for Latinos making up a large percentage of the populace, check a map of the world, and you will find Southern Florida is a hard swim away from Places like Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.
Re: First, you will find shit you won't like about any city. Next, If you're looking for work in Showbiz, you're aiming for the wrong coast. Go west to Cali instead. Also, you shouldn't have to worry about the gym. They're everywhere in Miami, it's an image conscious city. What you should be focused on, are the important things, like the local economy and job market, and the HIGH cost of living. If you can't cope with these first, you can forget about dating in Miami. If you're afraid of hurricanes, you should avoid south Florida altogether. There's no such thing as a "safe distance" from hurrcaines ANYWHERE IN MIAMI, especially when the storms can be as large as the entire state. If you want out of the direct path of the hurricanes, you'll want to move more towards north central Florida, like Orlando. Also, be advise that for any man, Black, White, or otherwise, you're gonna need some LOOONG green to make it happen in Miami. Good Luck!!
Re: I appreciate your contributions, guys. It's really helpful. Yeah, the one thing that makes me uncomfortable about the state of Pennsylvania as a whole is that so many racists and red necks reside there. It's definitely one of those states where even though interracial dating is now a lot more common, white families would definitely disapprove of any of their daughters trying to get into a long term relationship with a black man. The one thing I can't understand is why for example, many white women in Catholic, private universities, especially in Pennsylvania...schools like Saint Joseph's University, particularly, are so racist. I heard that some white parents in such schools actually send their daughters there to meet white men whom they could get married to. Saint Joseph's University especially, based on my personal experience, is one of those schools where a white woman, even if she's not into black men, wouldn't give you a chance to even compliment her if she looks good. They just don't even look at you or acknowledge your presence. It's not like I care or need their attention, anyway. It's just an observation. What a shame.
Re: I am not very surprised, Shaft  White Catholics can be extremely racist; i am a Catholic myself so i would know. I went to Catholic schools and a significant number of the girls were some of the most snobby, stuck-yp and racist pieces of crap i had ever met. But i do not have time for such people and i overlooked them after some time. So much for liberal Northeast
I lived in Miami for 4 years and my degree is from the University of Miami. When I lived there I lived Doral Country Club (close proximity to the airport), Coral Gables (where U of M is located) and Fisher Island (still have a condo there) which use to be the southern most tip of SoBe. All were nice for different reasons. Before I could recommend any place to stay, I would need to know a whole lot more about what you are looking for and what you want to be close to. Interracial dating is very prevelant. There are people from literally all over the world in South Florida. Lots to choose from besides just black and white Americans. You will need to get use to hanging all your clothing because folded clothes have a tendency to mildew. The summers are hell but the winter is heaven. You can swim all 12 months of the year. Lots and lots of different ethnic foods to choose from. Only thing is, I never really had any good chinese/japanese/thai food while I was there (or maybe I was just spoiled by living in San Francisco). Oh, but becareful of food poisoning. I have only had food poisoning 3 times in my life and all three times were in South Florida. And I have traveled all over the world because I have worked for the airlines for over 20 years.
Re: University of Miami Hi LaydeezmanCris and Fly Girl, thank you for your responses. To Fly Girl, I haven't been able to get a job in my field so far (Journalism/P.R./Communications) so I'm trying to see if I could get a teaching job at some point in the future at the University of Miami. However, if one were to become a teacher at the University, would I have much of a social life at all? I browsed through many of the departmental Web sites and a lot of the faculty look much older than I am. I'm 28. I would have to be discreet with the female student body on campus if I became a teacher there, because word goes around and I certainly can't make a move on a student in my class because it would be against university policy. So who do I hook up with then? I wonder if the ladies at that school are that aggressive for example to the point that they would make a move on a teacher if they found him attractive?
Just Remembered a Funny Experience I just remembered a funny experience. About nine years ago, while an undergraduate student at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia (freshman year) I stood in line one evening with a bunch of students to get food in the cafeteria. The cashier wasn't there, so everyone was waiting. I was the only black student in line. A naive, white female stepped up to me and asked: "Excuse me. Do you work here?" Assuming that I probably must be there to serve them or that I must possibly work there because I'm black. I looked at her and said: "Nope. Sorry. I'm a student just like you." That university is a great school academically, but if you're a black male looking for a university that would combine a rewarding academic experience with a great social life, I wouldn't encourage you to go there. It's easier for black females to blend in with white females and others but of course, for us black males, it's an entirely different ball game. Since then, I just began ignoring all of them and never went out of my way to seek to make friends with them or to get their attention for any reason. They all acted like a bunch of really spoiled, ignorant white kids anyway. And it's still that way today. Most black students routinely tend to transfer from that university after at least a year because of the lack of communication between races and the prejudice and racism which many students there promote. LaydeezmanCris, I'm still waiting to hear back from you regarding my email whenever you get a chance, and Fly Girl, to my last post here on this topic regarding the University of Miami. Thanks.
Re: Just Remembered a Funny Experience Hello Shaft. I am so sorry about not replying to the e-mail. I was actually planning to write a long reply yesterday but my e-mail service disconnected itself and so i lost all of it. I'd find some time today to re-write it. About your experience, if you'd been in America a long time, you'd have gotten used to it. I cannot count the amount of times i've had people make silly and sweeping assumptions of me, which by the way tends more to be white women; white people in general do it to me but it tends more to be white women that have done it to me. I remember my freshman year at University of Miami. The freshman year was a mess-around year for me; i never really did much studying and used to goof off. I saw virtually every big movie that came out, played sports all the time and partied like a freak. I managed just to pass in every examination. Anyway, it seemed like this particular girl noticed my lifestyle and it seemed to her as though i were not a serious-minded individual which at the time i was, but that was because it was only a one-off thing. One day, she came up to me and asked me, "Are you here on a sports scholarship"? For a minute, i was not sure whether i should ignore the question or not. I was just so annoyed but because i did not want to do anything silly, i just pretended not to hear. She had asked me loudly and was sure i heard (which i did) but just decided to ask again to be sure. Again she asked if i were here on a sports scholarship. This time, i looked her in the face and gave her one of the most puzzling stares she had ever got in her life. Immediately, she got the message. She then said, "Whoa, no need for the scary look. I only asked you a question". I was not very surprised that she asked the question though. She, for some reason, had always thought that i were very dumb and naive, when in actual fact, she was the naive one. She had the mentality of a 14 year old, literally. She acted like one too. So i was not surprised. And she was one who believed in all the negative stereotypes of blacks given the fact that she'd asked me similar questions that had given away her lewd naivety. I just brushed it off. Previously, she'd asked me some of the most bold questions a white person can ever ask such as "Do all black men have big penises like elephants?  AND "How come black men can jump really high? :smt107 :smt005 To be honest, what you have described is pretty much the same for every black male on American campuses. Since black women are seen as less threatening, they assimilate faster and easier with others unlike black males, who have got to go to uneven lengths to prove their simplicity. That was one of the reasons i really did not want to go to Harvard or any of those Northeastern colleges. My father was mad at me though and it took much a lot of my effort convincing him. He went to Harvard too and wanted me to do the same but i did not feel that way. I wanted to do what i felt comfortable doing and not what he wanted me to do. Sure, Harvard is more prestigious than UM but what if i did not get on there? What if i could not settle? I did not want to regret doing it so i decided not to opt in the first place. In all honesty, most black folks who go to college in the U.S go to colleges outside the Northeast. If they do not go to HBCUs, they go to others. Those Northeastern colleges can be viciously racist and still are. Columbia has a bad reputation for racism. I would not be shocked it St. Joseph were that way. I would do well to reply to your e-mail as quick as i can. Sorry about the delay. By the way, you mentioned you were African. What country are you from?
To Laydeezman Cris LaydeezmanCris, great to hear from you as always. You know honestly, having been in the U.S. for 10 years now and with all the experiences I have had so far, I really admire black men who live in this country, because the system is designed to work against you from the start. Corporate America works against you-When you do get in, you have to work 2-3 times as hard and are always being watched and assumptions are made about you; when you get accepted into Ivy League Universities, people assume that it's probably due to affirmative action and not your intelligence; the police is always waiting for a reason to pull you over, frisk you, shoot you and arrest you at any chance. And even when you go shopping, people follow you around in stores because they are scared that you would steal. Just being a black male in their opinion means you're more likely to commit a crime than anyone else. In order to continue to maintain a measure of anonymity, I think I would prefer telling you what country I'm from via email. However, let me give you two, great clues but if you figure it out, don't mention it here. 1. It's pretty close to yours; 2. Soccer. (When you email me, tell me what country you think it is). Finally bro, how where the women at University of Miami like? Were there lots of big booty ladies of all races there, both among the undergraduate and graduate populations? How about also in the city of Miami itself? I bet South Beach must be an entirely different story. There's probably a whole bunch of them there. If I were to ever get a teaching job at any universities over there, it's gonna be embarrassing for my students to run into me chilling on South Beach trying to talk to women. But what can I do? I'm human too.
