watching the video of Ben Carson criticizing the president got me thinking...black community is very religious, hasn't been doing well economically under obama, why are there so few black republicans?
While many blacks are socially conservative or moderate to centre-right on such social issues (that's been changing slowly with the Generation Y), they are generally more economically liberal and are willing to support government programs to give the "little guy" some leverage. Complete with the fact that history regarding which political party helped propelled progressive causes for blacks (The modern Democratic party), blacks tend to be more trusting of the Democratic cause because of these very things. Plus, there's a great level of distrust with the GOP that caters more towards the rich, upper class Americans and have been propelled to cut funding towards government sponsored programs.
Key word "MODERN"...because it was the Democratic party that was pro-slavery, while the Republican party was anti-slavery...go figure.
We could argue about history, but it's natural that times have changed and it takes one person to hold a dynamic shift in influence within a party. Since FDR, the Republican Party slowly gravitated towards the right and the Democratic party, while held economically liberal, pro-government policies, shifted left on the centre-left on the social front.
Founded in the Northern states in 1854 by anti-slavery activists, modernizers, ex-Whigs and ex-Free Soilers, the Republican Party quickly became the principal opposition to the dominant Southern Democratic Party and the briefly popular Know Nothing Party. The main cause was opposition to the Kansas–Nebraska Act, which repealed the Missouri Compromise by which slavery was kept out of Kansas. The Northern Republicans saw the expansion of slavery as a great evil. The first public meeting where the name "Republican" was suggested for a new anti-slavery party was held on March 20, 1854 in a schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin.[5] The first official party convention was held on July 6, 1854 in Jackson, Michigan. By 1858, the Republicans dominated nearly all Northern states. The Republican Party first came to power in 1860 with the election of Lincoln to the Presidency and Republicans in control of Congress and again, the Northern states. It oversaw the saving of the union, the end of slavery, and the provision of equal rights to all men in the American Civil War and Reconstruction, 1861-1877.[6]
Yes, I'm perfectly aware of all that. No need to get yourself in a tizzy. The point being is that while the GOP back in the day outlawed slavery, they didn't do much more for the freed blacks since then, until a little economically progressive man by the name of FDR, a Democrat, expanded government programs and actually allowed blacks and poor whites to find work. Basically, the progressives within the GOP slowly became part of the Democratic party we see today regarding progress. Social evolution continues to thrive in this country, but is somewhat hampered by reactionary ideology.
Tizzy? So when you post it's perfectly normal, when others post they're in a tizzy? Makes perfect sense...smh
It's only because I'm actually in agreement with everything you've posted on here, but you're only limiting yourself to just that one aspect of the past and not the chronological slow shift between the parties. I'm just expanding to what you're saying.
But I will argue that these "progressive government programs" have been the bane of our existence, and created a climate non-conducive to self reliance, and counterproductive to growth.
It depends on the person and less to do with the programs. There are plenty of countries outside the US that have even more generous, government programs, and yet there are far too few people compared to those in US who simply latch on it like puppies stuck to an electric wire. I do agree that there has to be a major overhaul on this matter, but the restructuring has to come from the person first.
You're right. I can remember when mommy and I were on welfare as a child. She struggled, ended up finishing college. Then was a Social Worker for the Department of Social Services for 30 years. Now if that ain't utilizing the system correctly, I don't know what is. She retired 2 years ago.
Maybe because the GOP since the 1960s has become the party of the new Confederacy and aren't really keen on recruiting Blacks into the Republican Party. Are people really that clueless about the last 50 years of history of the Republican party?? Willie Horton?? Welfare moms buying Cadillacs?? Refusing to acknowledge MLK day as a national holiday?? Voter suppression??? The Civil Rights Act of 1964 which caused the entire White south to switch parties and join the GOP?
The answer is "YES". And there's no such thing as voter suppression. That's just forward thinking citizens trying to eliminate all that useless racial entitlement all of us people of color have in the good ol' US of A..........
The bane of our existence? Are you crazy? If it weren't for government programs and it was up to the private sector the black unemployment would have doubled and stayed that way. Its not a coincidence that as government jobs disappear black unemployment is sky rocketing while white unemployment is getting smaller with the private sector. In a country formed on and sustained by white supremacy guess who is usually going to get the short end of the stick? I always wondered what exactly does growth and self reliance mean in a country where being black means to be twice as good to get half as far?
It means put in 4 times the work! I never said it was easy or fair. But if you can quantify it...it is attainable.
The success of your peers determines how hard you have to work in order to achieve and exceed their accomplishments. No matter how hard you work, you can't outrun your skin color. The problems in the Black community aren't a fault of the government, it's been an erosion in the value system of our communities. Uncle Sam can't really fix that. However the big myth is that it's ALL OF US. It never has been and never will be. Most non Black folks go around thinking 90% of Black people are uneducated, in prison, having illegitimate babies, in gangs and are drug addicted. That's the big lie.
Thomas Sowell, the brilliant black economist said on C-SPAN recently when he grew up in Harlem in the 1940's there was a high expectation from teachers and educators in general that if you could think and be successful at it no matter what a racist society threw at you , you will prevail. You had to be convinced that no matter the barriers you will succeed. Dr. Sowell said unfortunately those lessons of life survival are no longer emphasize in the schools today especially in the black community. What also was critical was the black parents of earlier generations who put high value on education even if they themselves lacked the education, they had high epectations of their children to be better like Dr. Ben Carson's mom did for him. I sometimes wonder if what we are seeing is too late to turn around. Are we as a nation in decline with the rest of the world cleaning our clock in jobs, education, and social development.
+1. If you aren't getting it right from your parents in the home, your chances for any kind of success in life are greatly reduced. I'm almost at the point we need to confiscate at risk Black babies and raise them with different parents other than their biological ones.lol But seriously, the mothers of these children I think should be identified before they give birth and forced to attend intensive parenting workshops, before AND after their children are born. We have generations of Black folk being raised by people who don't know what it means to be a good parent because they weren't raised in the right way themselves.
