Yeah, but he was a lame duck after the lewinsky crap. The republicans pretty much ran washington after that.
Separating fact from opinion A little Google never hurt anyone. I understand the point you're trying to make, but those fairy tales have nothing to do with us now. John McCain wasn't "pro-choice". Taken from: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18632802 This is a flagrant lie. The founding fathers of the US didn't even believe in the phrase "In god We Trust". As you no doubt already know, the country was not founded after the Civil War. Taken from: http://www.treas.gov/education/fact-sheets/currency/in-god-we-trust.shtml Intelligence and hard work are the things that's going to make this country realize its greatness again. All this mess about "believing" and "god bless america" is wonderful- when you're sitting in front of your TV or in your favorite pew on Sunday morning. All this right-wing propaganda has done in the last eight years is set us back even further. There's a reason that the constitution calls for a line b/w church and state. for example, I don't care that my neighbor is gay and wants to marry his boyfriend some day. That's not affecting the amount of money I make; it's not affecting my job prospects; it's not affecting my health or health insurance. In fact, his sexuality hinders me in absolutely no way at all, so why the big fuss about it? Abortion has been around since humans and making it illegal will do absolutely nothing to alter that. In fact, by making it legal, at least you know women who made a mistake/were raped/etc. aren't causing themselves more harm. Somebody didn't tell you the entire story. Only in recent years has this Congress become a mostly Democratic one. Prior to 2006, Congress was in the Republican's hands. Yes, some Republicans AND some Democrats voted for the war in Iraq; the political winds (at that time) seemed to blow in the favor of those that did. It wasn't so much that Bush fucked up the country all by himself; it was the mindset behind some of his choices that took us a couple of steps backwards. Wasting resources in Iraq when the people we wanted were in Afghanistan? Vetoing stem cell research which could have (and still can) saved countless lives, but doing nothing to make health insurance more accessible for the people? I don't believe he got the housing market in the situation that it's in all by himself, but when the signs first appeared, he didn't do much of anything to stop things from spiraling out of control. While I'm neither a Democrat nor Republican, I believe that the better ideas in the next few years will most likely come from the Democratic party. There are too many "We're conservative good Christian, pro-American" people, too many "We are how American is supposed to look" folks in the Republican party now. I think McCain did a great job of exposing the REAL Republican Party at the RNC; Palin has done her part to show them at her hate rallies. I think some people have a gilded view of just how fucked up things are with the country. One glance at the housing situation and one should know that one year is not enough to reverse over a decade of avaricious lending practices; one term is not enough to challenge this nation to achieve the greatness it once had when the rest of the world was playing catch up. Clever politics? No. A realistic assessment of the plethora of problems in front of him? Yes. I wish the best for Obama and his team, for although I believe they cannot do worse than Bush, a lot of hopes are riding on his ability to navigate this quagmire in which the current POTUS has landed us.
So now the whole crisis in our county is because of one white woman!! Wow!! We really do have ALL the power!! LOL!!:smt061 Sorry, I just couldn't resist!
Blacks use to be a voting base for Republicans up until early last century. It was a flood in Lousiana that was the catalyst for them to switch en masse. Funny how it plays out yet again in NoLa. (sorry if this has been posted already, I didnt read the entire thread) The rise of the evangelical movement in opposition to the civil rights movement also played a part in solidifying blacks in the Democratic party. Many private Christian schools/universities were started as an opposition to integration. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/flood/timeline/timeline2.html
Southern Democrats switched sides after LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act. The modern Republican party is not the "party of Lincoln", but rather the party of disgruntled forces in reaction to progressive shifts in American cultural, political, and social life since the Civil War.
To the thread-starter V777, I'm not going to let this go until you explain to me the meaning of "Country First", and what the advantages to being a republican truly are. I'm waiting...:smt024
Well, there is no use in trying to argue with you about it. I pray to God you will have your Damascus moment. This is a prove how democrats(some) can lie too. Taken from: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18632802 Thanks for correction. I apologize. Taken from: http://www.treas.gov/education/fact-sheets/currency/in-god-we-trust.shtml Well, there is no use in trying to argue with you about it. I pray to God you will have your Damascus moment. I totally agree. I have said it for a very long time before election day that Palin must STOP the personal attacks on Obama; but i guess it was because the Rep's didn't really have something to talk about other then Obama. I will say it again, It was clever politics. Deep down you know that Obama would never had that much support had he said this during his campaign, "It may not talke one year or one term but we will get there!"
Hope this will help.... http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-09-04-country-first_N.htm ST. PAUL — "Country First" is John McCain's motto and the theme of the convention that nominated him for president. But what does it mean? And if country is first, where does that leave God? Family? Party? Country First means different things to the delegates. They say it rarely rises to McCain's heroism at the Hanoi Hilton but could include Barack Obama's decision to skip a lucrative job after law school to run a voting rights program. To the delegates, Country First means patriotism, sacrifice and service, in all forms. It's a young Marine on the USS Iwo Jima headed for someplace dangerous. It's a church group fighting to open a homeless shelter in Montana. It's putting on your Coast Guard auxiliary uniform and rushing toward Hurricane Katrina when your wife is pregnant — and hoping your example isn't lost on your kids. To Texas delegate Yantis Green, it's as easy as giving blood every two weeks and as hard as sending a son off to war. He says that when he first heard the slogan, "I thought, 'That makes sense. That's John McCain.' But then I realized it applies to what we all should be doing."
About the abortion thing, statistics has shown that only 7 percent is for a valid reason. The 93 percent is for convenience sake. So you see the 7 percent is use by some democrats as an excuse to kill babies.... Did you know that there is such a group of people who are conservative Democrats(christians democrats)? I wound be so quick to degrade conservatives if I were you.... I think Obama forgot to mention one other race when he talked about angry white people, clinging to their guns and religion! Can you read between the lines? Okay I'm going to spell it out for you; what is up with the cursing?
I love it when people pull random statistics out of their asses, then don't bother to back them up by citing anything. Also, I wouldn't care if 100% of abortions were for "non-valid" reasons (What is that anyway?), it's none of your business why a woman decides to get one, so stay out of her uterus.
Here is a link of statistics by a Pro Abortion site and I think you will now understand the specific stand of me and others on the abortion issue; “Why women have abortions 1% of all abortions occur because of rape or incest; 6% of abortions occur because of potential health problems regarding either the mother or child, and 93% of all abortions occur for social reasons (i.e. the child is unwanted or inconvenient).” Full report; http://www.abortionno.org/Resources/fastfacts.html
Actually I fail to understand it and as far as I'm concerned most abortions are valid, which includes the desire to not have a child.
Blacks should be independents. Let the other suckers beg and come to us for our vote rather than for use to be taken for granted by either party.
I think all people should be independents. That's a good philosophy. Politicians should have to earn our respect and earn our vote. Not take it all for granted.
If anybody could show me a Republican initiative/bill/candidate that benefits African-Americans or anybody who isn't rich and white, I'd vote for it/him/her. All I've seen the past eight years is Repubs playing defense, rationalizing and making excuses for Bush's failed presidency. If you can show me a 3rd party candidate who isn't some fringe cult wacko (Ron Paul, Ralph Nader, Lyndon LaRouche, etc.) and had an actual chance of winning, I'd vote for him/her too. I'll stick with my Dems who have traditionally cared about working people, health care, public works, education, etc. Oh and the Dems gave us the first black president as well. You're welcome.
GOP cares about = Rich people, rural working class Dem cares about = Rich people, urban working class, rural working class Middle class gets left out sometimes but they are the only group the typically benefits regardless of who's in office because everyone panders to them!
